It is a really beautiful beginning of a requiem! Something similar in the beauty created Valentin Silvestrov in the 4. movement (Largo) of his Requiem for Larissa
If your school has access to Naxos Music Library (often most easily accessible on campus through the library's website), there is a beautiful recording by the Swedish Radio Choir. We performed the entire requiem last semester and dedicated it to a student who tragically lost his life days before our concert. The emotions that it evoked were incredible. Thank you Alfred Schnittke!
While Mozart's or Brahms' requiem is very tragic and fills you with sorrow, Schnittke's requiem is more terrifying and dark! Is this this the best requiem? I don't know. Is this the most distinctive requiem? Certainly! Astonishing! Ingenious!
This is the best of all requiems, except for Mozart's, in my opinion. One way or another, every time I listen to this it sends chills down my spine, just like Mozart's work.
I was honored to perform the US premiere of this work in Boston Cathedral in the presence of the composer and under the baton of Sarah Caldwell in 1987
that something this intense came out as disco was about to rise in popularity is a testament to Alfred Schnittke's immense ability. Is entirely possible to claim him as a creative genius...
I'm currently singing in a choir directed by Chorus Angelicus and Gaudeamus's founder, Paul Halley. I might actually become an organ scholar under his tutelage.
We're about to do Saint John Passion, but there are whispers of this for next year.
@skjumpers are you in nova scotia? i heard that he was doing something with kings college up there? maybe? haha i don't really know, but i'm sure that you would enjoy this piece. it brings back so many memories.
I heard the whole requiem and I have to admit that it's wonderful... never had I heard such a different requiem from the others... could somebody upload more parts of this piece? I can not buy this piece anywhere. Thank you.
I´m going to upload the complete requiem in a near future, the problem is that i don´t have the album where it´s contained, so i´ll have to borrow it again from the library of my university.
@cervereta I have had the entire work for some years now. This is the first time I am hearing for along time. Such beauty accumulates upon hearing again. Amazing
Wonderful!

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

i don't think that Rothko painting is related to Schnittke.. his music is much more meaningful and straight forward that most Rothko's works.

i thought it had some tonal qualitieys of repeatition as disco does, some atonal dissonace. disco does that, very much a more modern peice.

Huh. Usually I can't stand Schnittke, but I can actually listen to this without wanting to claw my ears out.

And Pierre Boulez's le marteau sans maître came out at the height of Elvis's fame in America. Two different worlds, nothing to do with each other.

ahh, i remember singing this with a choir called chorus angelicus and gaudeamus. this is a wonderful piece, very moving, yet dark and mysterious.

I did not found it in eMule. Well, I really found it, but only 2 or 3 people had it... so it was nearly impossible to download it.
