Resident Evil 1-4 were scary, 4 was just a little bit less than normal, then 5 stepped in and took away any shred of horror that game had when it came out. But anyway, this game is totally different than Resident Evil and looks amazing, I'm going to be playing it in a few hours hopefully.

Yes it is. You can download Penumbra Overture by Torrent, it's only 300 mo and it takes few hours to finish it. If you like suspense and horror and a "new" style of gameplay, just try it, it's very nice !

I love how they make the atmosphere scare you rather than monsters jumping out of closets and yelling "BOO!!", monsters are rare to meet and are pretty much invincible, thus you are always wandering around getting scared by every noice and whisper in fear of meeting the monsters.

Please support the devs and purchase the game. I download alot of games from big name devolopers who get more money from advertisements than from the sales.
But Frictional Games is just a very small indie company; they barely got any of the sales from Overture.
Well for one thing, big game developers dont make money from advertisements, they spend money to advertise. Secondly, Frictional Games's sales for Overture were due to Penumbra not being a mainstream game...in other words, there is no repetition, shooting, or online play to make mainstream gamers want to play it. With that said: both of these games are by far some of the best games I have ever played in terms of story, and overall depth. Plus the game looks fantastic.

you must play Overture first, because it's an episodic game. Without it, you're not really familiar with the whole story and it just turns into a survival game, which it really isn't.

I haven't played Bioshock, but from what I've seen of the game here on Youtube, Penumbra is probably alot scarier. Atleast Black plague is, Penumbra: Overture isn't that scary and Bioshock is probably scarier than Overture.
I gotta say, I must be loosing my mind. I can't see why people say the graphics are so terrible. I think they look awesome. They're not as detailed (as in variation) as other games but thats an artwork issue, nothing about the graphics themselves. Are people meaning to say that the *graphic environment* is bad?
well spoiled or not, I'm an engine developer and it really concerns me that I see these graphics as great. Worried it may effect my judgment for determining how I should make my own graphics. Remember when your selling a product, it doesn't matter what you think of it and it doesn't help either to blame your customers for not liking your product.
oh, and just so we're clear, I'm not a graphics hog either, but most people are, and it's near impossible to get people to take the game seriously if it's not top of the line.

That's why I far prefer this over Silent Hill or Resident evil. In those games, all you have to do is shoot them in the face. In Penumbra, you have to use creative thinking ;)
Yes, it's a game. Penumbra is using the HPL engine; over 3 years old and originally made from a 2-d game. For a 2 man team (and only 1 modeler) the engine and graphics are alot better than most people without the backing of a multi-billion dollar company can do.

I haven't played Bioshock, but from what I've seen of the game here on Youtube, Penumbra is probably alot scarier. Atleast Black plague is, Penumbra: Overture isn't that scary and Bioshock is probably scarier than Overture.

I gotta say, I must be loosing my mind. I can't see why people say the graphics are so terrible. I think they look awesome. They're not as detailed (as in variation) as other games but thats an artwork issue, nothing about the graphics themselves. Are people meaning to say that the *graphic environment* is bad?

Nah, they're just spoiled by games who spend millions on graphics.
I love how nice the engine looks, and how orignally it was from their 2-d game Energetic.
The devs are making HPL2 now though, which will have a new graphics engine behind it.

well spoiled or not, I'm an engine developer and it really concerns me that I see these graphics as great. Worried it may effect my judgment for determining how I should make my own graphics. Remember when your selling a product, it doesn't matter what you think of it and it doesn't help either to blame your customers for not liking your product.

oh, and just so we're clear, I'm not a graphics hog either, but most people are, and it's near impossible to get people to take the game seriously if it's not top of the line.

Just to make you feel better;
HPL engine was originally a 2-d engine for their game, Energetic.
It was than modified to add another axis; making it 3d. They used this modified engine to make Penumbra Technology Demo (2006)
And now, they're making HPL2! Basically a new graphics engine with alot of changes.

The developers has made the game in a way that makes you afraid of the monsters by letting you see them rarely, and let you be unable to kill them.
That makes you to not wanna meet a monster ;)

That's why I far prefer this over Silent Hill or Resident evil. In those games, all you have to do is shoot them in the face. In Penumbra, you have to use creative thinking ;)

Yes, it's a game. Penumbra is using the HPL engine; over 3 years old and originally made from a 2-d game. For a 2 man team (and only 1 modeler) the engine and graphics are alot better than most people without the backing of a multi-billion dollar company can do.
