Since some of you are talking about rap here's some hip hop history for ya.
West coast rap started around the late 70s and early 80s influenced by funk. In 83 you had a rapper by the name of Too Short using funk beats with lots of bass and lyrics about pimpin. In Texas a group by the name of UGK influenced by Too Short came out a few years later the sound and lyrics are very simular.
West coast rap influenced the southern hip hop scene with bass and lyrics about ballin and pimpin.
