@neffada53 it's because they don't eat as much and it takes alot out of them if u just put a bowl of food and water next to them and give them some vitamins its fine.
To all you people saying "Let it Hatch" when the eggs are infertile, they will only end up rotting underneath the chicken. Some breeds, like Red Stars and Barred Rocks never give much trouble, while others, like Rhode Island Reds, Orpingtons, and the Cochins and Silkies shown here often do.
Aww she's just like my Sussex chicken very protective but if you leave them on there egg they wont lay anymore so all the people out there saying 'let it hatch' should go buy their on rooster and chicken and have them hatch the egg.
Aslo are a few of them sebrights because i love them their so small and dainty
1 of our hens was broody nd we thought she was ill at first nd got rlly worried -.- but shes broody at the moment nd she pecks us wen we try nd take the eggs ...
broken an eg in her ough xD that would be sad. When i collect eggs they are NEVER on them, not seen them on one yet. well a couple times but not these hens, and mine are the same as yours! i come in and they are perching, with 9 eggs in one laying place! idk if they take turns all night or what
My friends hen did this xDD She got herself so dirty, cos' she would just sit there in her coop all day shrieking at anyone who came into the yard! I love this video so much! <3
That was so cute! but sad cause she was screeching like she was upset. Broody hens are so attractive! I have 16 hens and not one of them has ever been broody :< But I do have 4 Silkies that are to start laying late next month. And Silkies have a reputation for being broody and I also heard they make excellent mothers.
LOL=] mine did this 2 with her eggs so i left her alone later came back and she hatched 12 adorable little baby chicks but sadly 7 of them drowned and them some butthole poisened 2 more of them so sadly i only have3 chicks =[ rip peaches and eagle =[
you can trigger any chicken to be broody with a fake clutch of eggs. this is what they do when its time to try and hatch them. if they are not firtile, then yes, they will just spoil. its best to keep all laying areas clean of all eggs, or you'll risk one of your hens going broody. some get like this just before and after laying. if they brood for more than 1 day, they will stop laying for a time. some longer than others.
chickenmom: Erm ... I'm pretty sure the eggs would eventually rot if he let her have his way. The hen doesn't know any better. That's why they collect the egs and try not to let them build up, or they'll get like this.
I used to have some Buff Orpingtons. When they went broody, we called them Doberhens...man those things could bite!! After a while I started wearing gloves in the chickencoop!
I need someone to help me out: My hen has laid 11 eggs in a nest she made, she has a rooster, open space, quality food and water. However she is not sitting on the eggs. Any of you have any idea why is this ?
zsteev: It's Clayton. I live on a farm, so I can help you out. It could be that the eggs aren't fertile (meaning that the eggs aren't capable of producing a chick). Or it could just be that the hen doesn't have motherly instincts.
You should have seen my hen when she was broody! I'd offer her some water from a container and food from my hand and she would go craaaaaaaaaaazy!!! If I took her off the nest, she'd follow me around attacking me whilst I was removing the poop from their pen!
(they are normally free range, but we kept them in the pen whilst the veggie patch grew big enough to support nets)
Yeah... I don't like taking their babies from them =( but my parents don't mind... I would never steal an egg from a chicken, unless she left it unnatended and uncared for.
With mine, I ended up with so many birds that I had to draw the line but I used to let the broodies hatch their eggs. You can't win because if the eggs are not fertile, they won't hatch and eventually, the bird gets depressed and some of the leading hens in the flock will punish the hen for failing and not producing any chicks. I've seen it happen. I have a Blue silkie that just loves to be a mum, lives for it, but I can't have anymore birds for a while and she is depressed about it.seriously
I thought so Matonius, I had a young hen a few years ago and she didn't have a rooster, yet she was really broody, afterward a female duck hatched ducklings and she would take care of them like if they were her own. Sadly that hen dissapeared mysteriously, never to be heard from again. :(
We had an angel fish that did the same. She layed her eggs on the underside of a leaf in the fish tank and spent all day keep the other fish on the other side of the tank lol, it looked rediculous her on one side of the tank guarding eggs that would never hatch and about 20 fish on the other side.
@coryzilla chicken eggs only have chicks in them if they have been fertilized. if there is no rooster around they will still lay eggs because the chicken has still ovulated just like female humans do. if you don't eat eggs because you think there is a microscopic embryo in them i assure you there is not. i have cracked open an egg with an embryo inside because we had a rooster on our farm and it its pretty noticeable
it's fun, but i think the birds are on strike. we gave 30 or so to 2 ppl, (on loan so to speak) and lost a few to hawks. the logical solution: get more! i have now 30 layers-on-the-way, 20 "core" layers, and 100 17 week old newbies. between them, the 3 turkies, 11, geese, and 23 ducks, i have no more lawn :(

chickens decended from dinosaurs. when the big dinos were killed off, the small ones lived and evolved feathers.
some scientists have been able to genetically manipulate chick embryos, and make them grow teeth like aligators and ancient raptor tails.
