His 'truest and purest friend'. How lucky they were to have each other. How lucky we were they met. The world's a duller place. Love to John & Waylon xx
This song was written by Kris Kristofferson, as already mentioned before in here. This was one of the few songs that Kris has written on request. June Carter had asked him do write a song for Johnny for a little go-together after Johnny's last rehab. Kris said in an interview, "I don't know whether it embarrassed him more or embarrassed me more."
The song is on Kris's latest album "Closer to the bone" (2009).
Kris was going to record it back when he wrote it, but while recording he couldn't get Willie, singing backup, sing this line "I love you John." Willie sang "He loves you, John" and made Kris laugh so hard that they couldn't finish the song ... Kris later said, Willie just could not bring himself to say, "I love you John." But Johnny was still alive then, maybe now Willie would be able? At least, Waylon was...
@ragester1 kristofferson and cash were also very close, i'm reading cash's autobiography right now. I think Willie has always kind of been a loner though, even though everybody loves him.
Kris recorded his old song "Good Morning John" about Johnny Cash.
KK recalls a previous attempt to cut Good Morning John with Willie Nelson. On harmony vocals: I got to that line where I say, I love you, John, and Willie sang, He loves you, John. I said, Cmon, Willie, you can say, I love you, John. I guess it embarrassed him. Anyway, we ended up not putting it out then.
Kristofferson explained Johnny Cash's importance in his life.
Years ago, I shook Johnny Cash's hand backstage at the Ryman, and it changed my life. He was my hero, my inspiration, my champion and ultimately -- incredibly -- he was my friend.
I got to go around the world making music with him and seeing that
spiritual communion that went down between John and his audience.
Bob Dylan said it the best. He said that John was like the North Star: You could guide your ship by him."
Hey!!! i just realized Waylon is singing it which is appropriate, Yea KK wrote it and yea the were best friends he and JC. Out of The Highwaymen i woulda said JC and Waylon had the closest friendship. Thats my opinion.
This is the tune that got me hooked on Waylon. First Waylon tape I bought at this truckstop in Sonora TX had this tune on it and we wore it out over a weekend of South Texas deer hunting.
This video made me almost cry! I've got so many emotions coming up! I love these guys just as much as my kin -and maybe more than some! And when it comes to influences, memories and emotions I guess it's only my kids and my nearest friends that can be compared. These two men will stay with me for the rest of my life!
Awesome!!!
