  • Kris was going to record it back when he wrote it, but while recording he couldn't get Willie, singing backup, sing this line "I love you John." Willie sang "He loves you, John" and made Kris laugh so hard that they couldn't finish the song ... Kris later said, Willie just could not bring himself to say, "I love you John." But Johnny was still alive then, maybe now Willie would be able? At least, Waylon was...

  • @biggestkrisfan willie and John were never good friends, unlike the other 3,a very unique love tween John,Kris and Waylon

  • Out of the Highwaymen, John Cash and Waylon were by far the closest, As Cash's son said, "They were Kin"..

  • @ragester1 kristofferson and cash were also very close, i'm reading cash's autobiography right now. I think Willie has always kind of been a loner though, even though everybody loves him.

  • rip two gods

  • new KK CD

Closer to the Bone by Kris Kristofferson.

    released on September 29, 2009.

Kris recorded his old song "Good Morning John" about Johnny Cash.

KK recalls a previous attempt to cut Good Morning John with Willie Nelson. On harmony vocals: I got to that line where I say, I love you, John, and Willie sang, He loves you, John. I said, Cmon, Willie, you can say, I love you, John. I guess it embarrassed him. Anyway, we ended up not putting it out then.

  • I agree with Willie on this one!

  • Kristofferson explained Johnny Cash's importance in his life.

Years ago, I shook Johnny Cash's hand backstage at the Ryman, and it changed my life. He was my hero, my inspiration, my champion and ultimately -- incredibly -- he was my friend.

I got to go around the world making music with him and seeing that

spiritual communion that went down between John and his audience.

Bob Dylan said it the best. He said that John was like the North Star: You could guide your ship by him."

  • ''you can lose your mind and memory but you aint gonna lose me as a friend'' pure class

  • A wonderful tribute song to the great Johnny Cash. It brings tears to my eyes, such a lovely thought and the words are so appropriate.

  • AWESOME.....

  • Hey!!! i just realized Waylon is singing it which is appropriate, Yea KK wrote it and yea the were best friends he and JC. Out of The Highwaymen i woulda said JC and Waylon had the closest friendship. Thats my opinion.

  • @teddie488

I agree with you on that one. They were like brothers.

  • Such a beautiful song. What more could somebody do out of love for their best friend......than write a song like this .thx so much

  • This is the tune that got me hooked on Waylon. First Waylon tape I bought at this truckstop in Sonora TX had this tune on it and we wore it out over a weekend of South Texas deer hunting.

And when it comes to influences, memories and emotions I guess it's only my kids and my nearest friends that can be compared. These two men will stay with me for the rest of my life!
