  • 'Oh, I've walked on water, run through fire,

Can't seem to feel it anymore'

  • couldnt agree more with that top comment

  • Does anyone by any chance would happen to have a fucking time machine? I need to reborn in this era.

  • No song has ever and never will express so eloquently these horrible feelings of someone staring into the abyss knowing that life will never improve and that we're all doomed. It's like looking at and experiencing the anatomy of a depression.

  • OMG, this song is SAD and POWERFULL at the same time

  • @TransmissionFilms That's the beauty of it. Music should evoke an emotional response. I always think "Hm... maybe the song's beginning to lose its power..." but then the guitar comes in and I just lose it, and myself. Such melancholy, but such beauty.

  • I will be bought in to my funeral with this- if anyone has any respect for me - and it wont be long!!!!

  • @claire30061 For the sake of your friends and family i hope its a long time from now! Peace

  • its been a long time since ive listened to this album. was in a dark place back then, thought i had got my depression under control. have i fuck, i just distracted myself from it. this song and album reminds me other people have gone through this

  • A change of speed, a change of style,

a change of scene, with no regrets...

  • One of the most brilliant songs ever written. A song to identify with.

  • <3 beautiful song.. divnaa

  • Goddamn it, Ian. Why is it that when a new voice for a generation of originality appears, it's silenced early? Ian. you'll always live in my being. You understand me completely. I love you.

  • another dawn fades into the abyss.

  • over each mistakes were made, i took the blame...

  • All of what every one has said, and iconic.

  • So dead.

  • If you wanna choose the saddest song ever, you really choose this song.

  • i want this song played at my funeral....it is my favorite.

  • I've walked on water, run through fire CAN'T SEEM TO FEEL IT ANYMORE

  • The best song of all time

  • man i gota cover this song wen we play out wow .......

  • In terms of building songs, this is Joy Division's best. However this ranks as one of my favourites of all time, I still deeply enjoy Warsaw - killing punk song!

  • Crying out of sadness doesn't necessarily mean not being happy or that the end of the crying wouldn't be a smile =')

  • this isnt depressing?joy division sates that there music is uplifting to them, and that theres no set meaning to there songs.just free interpretation.

  • At some part it sounds like one of the Tatu song, this stupid russian bitches are nothing compered to JOY DIVISION

  • this is the song i want played at my funeral.

  • one of the best song ever

  • exelente unknow pleasures is fantastic

  • Joy Division clearly inspired the first 2 albums U2 released.

  • J Cole samples this on Mr. Nice Watch.

  • Fucking sad song, but amazing.

  • I can't believe my quote was actually someones tumblr post for this song, lol. I was shocked. fifty some odd people liked it!

  • Yearrrrrrr, this song is so great!

  • masterpiece

  • This was his suicide letter in a way

  • @Somatunes

Nah, he was still relatively happy at this time I bet. Unknown Pleasures was a social commentary about despair, Closer was despair at work and in action.

  • i love you Ian...eternal

  • "Unknown Pleasures" is a bass player's wet dream.

  • @alund1306 its a wet dream in general

  • we'll share a drink and step outside

    same person says it

because i know how it is, im bipolar and a manic depressive

same exact person, just different sides

but both sides come together after a binge

  • @slangshotstudios me too....same old story...

  • Those of you who have come here know true music...

  • 34 cretins should listen again

  • If ever there was a song pulled from the depths of someone's tormented heart this must be the one. RIP Ian, you are sadly missed. I had the pleasure in seeing the play live more than once in my hometown of Stockport, Manchester, fond memories indeed

  • this song has DOOMED written all over it.

  • What a tormented soul...Kafka was another...

  • a loaded gun wont set you free--so YOU say fuckin brilliant song!!!

  • Joy Division must always be underrated, a civilisation that acknowledges them is doomed.

  • Gotta love Sabbath Division!

  • "Unknown Pleasures", last song of the "outside" side.

  • @svagana

    Don't you mena "A Side"?

  • @kolos2006 No. There was no side A. It was called "Outside" on the vinyl.

  • Just to correct myself...

The main riff in this is basically the last rif from "War Pigs". Awesome riff.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila its similar but not the same.

  • Ah, new photos. Thank you.

  • "New Dawn Fades" is the saddest song I've ever heard. I actually avoid putting this song on my ipod and I also avoid listening to this song. It's a beautiful song, one of the best ever. However, it's depression in musical form. When I hear this song my feelings of depression, anxiety, despair, and suicide appear; I feel like nothing will get better and I would just rather die instead.

  • @TransmissionFilms if you think that's depressing then listen to The Eternal by Joy Division, New Dawn Fades used to be my favourite song of all time til i heard this. Sheer perfection when it comes to emotion.

  • @TransmissionFilms same it piss me off, i can't hear that music all day long because i get depressed to death and wanna die... 5th years of severe depression. Don't give up ! Depression is a life-eating worms. Let's kill those woprms.

  • @TransmissionFilms think this was background song for your life; think that was a everyday mood..no wonder he killed himself :/

  • @TransmissionFilms "The Eternal" is sadder.

  • @TransmissionFilms I think you're being overly dramatic.

  • @stucool17 No that's seriously how I feel about this song.

  • @TransmissionFilms im completely understand what you are saying. so many people just view joy division as a good band. but they are much more than that. maybe these people dont suffer from depression. but i listen to a lot of music and love many different types, but nothing can affect me like joy division. its unreal how this song can just tear me apart emotionally

  • @TransmissionFilms Depression, anxiety, despair, suicide......i thought those were the joys of life....

  • @Boobymacintoshfilms

You forgot aspergers. Which Ian very much probably had.

  • @TransmissionFilms - I don't think it's "sad" or " depressing" just BRILLIANT like everything JOY DIVISION did. One of the greatest ART bands of all time.

  • @TransmissionFilms so right... so right

  • @TransmissionFilms There's a word for all that: morose.

  • @TransmissionFilms I will be brought into crematorium with this track- so many people did not undertand me in this life and depression is not understood - u loose family and friends but there is also a unique creativity too!!!

  • @TransmissionFilms It's the heaviest song ever written. So heavy infact, that it is VERY hard to listen to. I've got it all, depression, anxiety, ect., but I find a strange comfort in this song, It's just very powerful.

  • @TransmissionFilms # First World Problems

  • @TransmissionFilms it's tough when a song can do that to you. I find the same with Radiohead's Pyramid Song and The Cure's Same Deep Water.

  • @TransmissionFilms The Eternal is the most depressing.

  • Barry White "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby" (1973)

  • The main riff in this is basically the final riff in "Iron Man" by Sabbath. One of the most beautifully gloomy riffs ever.

  • This is Pure ROCK... just that..

  • directionless so plain to see a loaded gun wont set you free such a sick line

  • @BoredOfThisSite.........I wouldn't have 'em sound any different.

  • moby's version is pretty bad ...

  • @grimmybug Wrong

  • If Ian Curtis had not committed suicide, his lyrics and voice would probably have less meaning today. All great artists suffer.

  • Christ, this is amateur-hour stuff. Sounds like somebody's GCSE music coursework.

  • @BoredOfThisSite Ok, Troll, I'll bite. Amateur enough to influence and create an entire new genre of music. What kind of sound equipment do you suppose they had to work with in 1976?

  • @TheWonderDoc The use (and misuse) of the word "Troll" may well be the internet's most prolific cliche. The only one to rival it is Godwin's Law. Anyway, the comment was more an observation of the lyrics, delivery, hamfisted mangling of the instruments and the general tone of juvenile self-pity. As for the ability to make decent recordings in 1976... that just doesn't hold water. Not every album made prior to 1977 sounds like it was recorded in a wardrobe.

  • @BoredOfThisSite Sometimes the application of the word "troll" hits it's mark. Hitler... there invoked godwin. That out of the way, it's exactly the reasons you listed that made them so popular. If I may quote Ayn Rand: Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist's metaphysical value-judgments. This music is not created for consumption, but for the sheer art.

It conveys meaning and transfers emotions and allows the listener to relate to the songs.

  • @BoredOfThisSite it's important to note a few things. These guys were quite literally a garage band and their primary influence at the time were the sex pistols.

Due to the sex pistols, the "ham fisting" was part of the influence. Many bands wrote albums before they knew how to play well or could afford professional studio time. The Clash, Dead Kennedy's, Siousxie & banshees, all influenced that way

You can create an extremely well produced, technically perfect song, and have it suck.

  • @TheWonderDoc its about time some one wrote something truelly bang on! the pistols 1 album changed the whole music industry the dammed etc etc!.

  • Christ, booshank, I started listening about a week ago and you've got me thinking I'll be hanging in my kitchen by tomorrow night. Then again, I have been twitching rather frantically recently...

  • Once you immerse yourself in Joy Division, you're never the same again, at least for me.

  • Ian's voice is full of so much emotion, and you know his lyrics and his passion when he sings is coming from his soul, what an inspirational man

  • Happy birthday, you legend.

  • @katasaifa I can appreciate your musical passion, Kat, but that doesn't negate my own view. New Dawn Fades, from 1995's HEAT, is truly pulse-pounding. JD's is nice as well, but more of a take I'd expect to hear in a bar or small concert. I'm just trying to relay how I interpret the style, and it's in no way meant as an insult.

  • all dislikes are ak-qaeda scum

  • A solid "bar act" song that was elevated to incredible force and depth by Moby.

  • @PaulGrantDesigns Moby Elevated it? LMAO!! Not even Moby would be so pretentiousto say such a thing. There is a lot to be said by hearing the Artist who wrote it and later killed himself vs a cover of the track minus emotion.

  • @terryfink Are you telling me he hung himself after hearing the MOBY version?

  • @PaulGrantDesigns No joy division version no moby version. End of story.. Lets not forget that New Order had a lot of success also.

  • @terryfink Wrong

  • @PaulGrantDesigns Wrong? Moby is shit..

  • @terryfink

    It is indeed!

  • 33 dislikes? Another one of their songs had the same number. I wonder if it is the same group of losers going around looking for Joy Division songs to dislike. What do these people want? Kittens and rainbows? Those are nice, but not all the time. Really people. Get a life.

  • If I could say, this would be the best song ever made by jd, but I would say that for any of their songs, and when I look at the others just can't compare that much brilliance which was produced by them... fucking genius

  • JMC -- Great work!

  • I been trying to find a good music for few years now since I m from gen where rap and sht has taken over. I thank god for Donnie Darko thats where I found about this band and wow wow wow I feel sad I never came across this band. You old timers are very lucky. Never heard music so good I just cannot describe how I feel when I listen to joy division its just amazing. Also thanks for the upload.

  • @1henameless That's funny, Donnie Darko has some great tunes. I'm serious, check out Echo and the Bunnymen and enjoy.

  • @kooperwhyhello Funnily enough I know Debbie Curtis and have also read the book (Touching From a Distance - I presume you are talking about?). The film is good - really good. Its not exactly as the book portrays it, but then Anton Corbijn had additional sources of input for the story. Some of the characters aren't accurate either, according to what Natalie Curtis says (in an interview).. I've watched it a few times now and it never fails to move me.

  • The beat reminds me of Yngwie Malmsteen "Black Star". This JD song is pretty sweet though

  • @Deetroiter No - Black star reminds you of this

  • does anyone else find themselves humming along with the bass guitar?

  • Sluša Srbija, al bogami i Hrvatska :) Mislim da cijela ex yu sluša Joy Division! Davno je Gile pjevao Igra rock n roll cela Jugoslavija! Pozdrav komšija/nica ;)

  • @jaanarhist Naravno da slusamo Joy Division. Pozdrav iz Kragujevca, Srbija

  • I Srbija slusa JOY DIVISION...

  • @JonnyP71 you forgot to mention radiohead.

  • This phenomenal song is my anthem. I went to so much thoughtful effort and lump-in-my-throat expense at the start of the year for a friend's pleasure only to be soundly rejected. I have no regrets because it's just who I am, but these lyrics and the intense soul put into them help me to overcome my feelings of foolishness. Ian Curtis will forever live through his music and his genius.

  • what a great song to drink too

  • The descending/repeating bass line at the end...I've never heard anything like that before. Words cannot describe the ending to this song. Perfect.

  • i hope that i'm not the only one who is reminded of Black Sabbath when i listen to this song.

  • bellissima ......

  • Their greatest moment.

Sure, it may be depressing for some, but not as depressing as a world without Joy Division."

  • Comment removed

  • very nice! excellent video! X X X X X X X X

  • today 31 years have passed...

  • This is the most depressed song, I've ever heard...

  • IAN CURTIS YOUR POETRY WILL LIVE ON FOREVER....LEGENDS DON,T DIE!!

  • 31 years ago today...RIP Ian Curtis. Your pain still moves me.

  • born in 89,9 years after ians tragic death their music more relevent today that ever.IAN CURTIS ONE OF THE BEST PORTRAYERS OF HUMAN EMOTION THROUGH MUSIC EVER!

  • Joy Division > Doors

  • jb is better

  • @c69stock no

  • this song is making me cry and shaking places in my mind that i didnt know existed

  • @MustHaveRocknRoll And thank GAWD for that.....! He was a Mover and Shaker in this temporal life.....! try imaging going back to when it all started. Peace \ / :)

  • Hope he was reborn in some happier place.

  • this is killing me

  • "After pondering over the words to New Dawn Fades, I broached the subject with Ian, trying to make him confirm that they were only lyrics and bore no resemblance to his true feelings. It was a one-sided conversation. He refused to confirm or deny any of the points raised and he walked out of the house. I was left questioning myself instead, but did not feel close enough to anyone else to voice my fears."

    ~Deborah Curtis

  • @monkeys37 The last line almost sounds like Curtis lyrics even though its deborah Curtis.

  • it will b the song I die with and in my funeral if any one bothers to turn up!

  • I hope, there is something like artist heaven. You know. I really want Ian to know, how he changed the music world. What a influence he left. What a hero and genius he is and how we adore him. P.S. Best guitar riff ever. It ate me. Literally

  • Sisters of Mercy tries hard to this sound in early tracks but they fail......ad I really like early SoM, this song is epic

  • A cross of The Doors and Black Sabbath through their own distinct sound - one of their most memorable tracks. The end of the chorus is enough to make one soar to the skies.

  • Such an epic tune. The only other song that i can think off that comes close to this is maybe Nice dream or No Surprises, songs that when you feel like shit & feel nothing can perk you up and when you feel good they make you feel even better, as i said, Epic.

  • beautiful song

  • I've been a fan of this band for most of my life. Truly one of the most underrated bands in the world.

  • @TruGamer128 Since when have Joy Division EVER been underrated ????

  • @TruGamer128

Underrated? You sure? By who? Only by people with no soul, surely, but since when did their opinion count for fuck all?

    ;)

    Neil x x x ;)

  • @TruGamer128 so true!

  • @TruGamer128 I beg to Differ. They are not underrated. It's just there's too many dumb people to truely appreciate good music.

  • @TruGamer128 Um, I don't think that you could really call this band "underrated". They changed the face of music in a lot of areas and while not as popular in the mainstream US many many many of the musicians in the world today not only know who these guys are, but were also influenced by their music.

  • Jeez I am 53 soon and Ian's voice still haunt's my mind every now and again and through other totally amazing vocalists I still love. My usual departure is via headphones and some JD on ice. Good to see the Joy DIvision with Ian arestill remembered so well.

  • a great detachment to their instruments here, they sounded like they just couldnt be arsed playing to begin with but then it all just fell into place.

  • I really feel bad for the future generations of people who will never experience music

like this. So raw and powerfully emotional. Big fan of Ian and Joy division.

  • I have been a Joy Division fan for years and all i can say is...wow...this song still gets to me as much as the first time i heard it

  • I want to write comment about how fuckingly amazing this sing is....but i just cant find good words. You know, that feeling, right ?

  • @MrRashcroft Escalofriante y siniestra belleza

  • Admiration from a distance..

There are a lot of songs about happines, being powerfull etc...but there a few songs about the haunting feelings of depression and guilt. And Ian was for real... It's gives me an uneasy feeling: It's so beautiful done and still it has a dangerous side: this is not a good song to listen when you're feeling a lot of self pity...

But: “Honesty is as rare as a man without self-pity” (fine quote from S V Benet).

  • A chance to watch, admire the distance, Still occupied, though you forget. Different colours, different shades, Over each mistakes were made. I took the blame. Directionless so plain to see, A loaded gun won't set you free. So you say. We'll share a drink and step outside, An angry voice and one who cried, 'We'll give you everything and more, The strain's too much, can't take much more.' I've walked on water, run through fire, Can't seem to feel it anymore.
  • I knew the massive massive a ttack version.

  • Just discovered this brilliant fucking track.Powerful...

  • Not Bad , Considering They Didnt Even Play There Instruments Correctly ... True Artists.

  • @potchoker whos to say what the correct way is?

  • @potchoker

Is there realy a "correct way" to play an instrument? Sure, there is the academic way, but cant we say Joy Division played perfectly, because they made us feel what they wanted us to feel, and isnt that the point of art?

  • i want this song played at my funeral...

  • Great song and very deep.

  • creeps me out

  • Electric

  • what keeps bringing me back to this song is the guitar riff and the lyrics.

  • I count myself lucky that I saw this band live so so long ago but this tune can still move me to tears.....haven't we all felt like this at some time..New Dawn Fades...a loded gun won't set you free...so you say...fucking magic

  • The sad rumour is Ian Curtis hang his self after listing the record the Idiot off Iggy Pop, R.I.P Ian Curtis.

  • what can you say about this atmosphere.....

  • Sooooooo Good!

  • 32 people can't understand.

  • @tEaR90 X-factor babies I'm afraid mate,some people don't have a clue ;)

  • fuckin awesome
