The JDM STI motor displaces 2 liters vs the rest of the world has 2.5 liters. The longer stroke of the 2.5l allows more torque at lower revs, but the top end is reduced due to more internal mass. The JDM uses that to it's advantage and the 2.0 is fitted with a Twin-scroll turbo unit vs the 2.5 Single-scroll unit. The twin-scroll spins up faster and provides more boost over a broader power band, so the JDM 2.0 is making around 320hp vs the 2.5 305hp.
I think the drivers played a huge part in this test. Big confidence in tsuchiya as a driver. I'm a subaru lover but i'm well aware that the sti tested normally wouldn't beat an evo in this situation.
i cant believe they all lost to a hatchback shopping car!!! :O btw iv never heard of those evo's variants ........ iv only known them as Evolution X ,,,,, there must be another variant that will eat them all ...... Top Gear proved them otherwise .. hmm ... dilemma ....
I second that. Here in the US the EVO unfortunatly out performs the STi. But in the hands of professionals the STI came on top. Cameras don't lie. But it still F's with ne why Subaru still insisted on an aluminumn block when clearly that is one if the major reasons it is inferior to the numbers an EVO can make in stock shirt block form. STi love!
@EvoPower2010 Oh gee, that seriously explains why the other Impreza won too, and you're also forgetting that Tsuchiya wasn't even drifting with the new Sti. And besides, these are Japanese model originals. They clearly will have different specs than from other countries.
@EvoPower2010 Topgear dont know how to test cars like the Best Motoring team. And i think the evo X and the hatch Sti posted the same times and clarkson ate his words?

WRB STi 5 door FTW... but it's my daily driver so I guess I'm a bit biased. Don’t get me wrong they were all badass cars but 1st and 2nd place were clearly determined.
Wow, awesome. Do you know what the difference is between the new Japanese STI and the new American STI? I noticed that the RPM red lines at 8 on the Japanese STI!
@chrismighton, Japanese STI is more powerful than American! Japanese STI has a different type of turbine allowing it to develop higher RPM and power...
@ProhorovUKR Is that really all, don't you normally have to balance the engine internals so that you can get a higher RPM range safely for an everyday or race driven car?.
@IrnMaiden304 Actually, the reason the Japanese version has a higher redline is because it uses a smaller, higher-revving 2.0L turbo flat four. The American model has a 2.5L and produces similar power at lower revs. Aside from that, there are also differences in gear ratios between the American and Japanese models.

Subaru won? HAHAH That's why in top gear Evo's were always nearly 3 seconds faster than Scooby's. Impreza just won because of Tsuchiya

@chrismighton The American STI is a 2.5 whilst the Japanese is a 2.0 hence the difference in rev limit
generalsir 5 months ago
@chrismighton You can change the stock turbo to Japanese STI turbo(twin scroll turbo). Then your car will faster than the Japanese STI.
kennethlaw729 2 months ago
@chrismighton The main difference is that japanese sti has 2 liter engine and american(and also european) has 2,5 liter.
