Look at her opinions, new york vs. school board, the firefighters case, look at her opinions at the supreme court website archives. Quite a few of her major opinions were very similar to conservative views, even scalia wrote similar thoughts on some of the very same cases. I think she belongs on the court because she is smart, but she is not a liberal lion, she isn't even for abortion which is a no no for liberals.

The 60% number you cite is extremely misleading. Yes, she's been reversed 60% of the time that SC GRANTS CERT. They don't do that much. The 60% represents 4 cases in over a decade on the bench. The typical SC reversal rate is 65% She's issued several hundred opinions. In reality, she's reversed less than 1% of the time.
Besides, merely being overturned doesn't make a judge good or bad. Just look at Scalia. When his cases were granted cert by the SC, he was overturned 100% of the time.

As a loyal Obama supporter, I'd like to remind people that a justice's personal views are irrelevant. Why? Because the SOLE duty of a Federal Supreme Court justice is to interpret and apply the law as it is currently written, through the eyes of the Founders, and with respect to precedent.
It is NOT the role of any justice to ignore, overturn, or strike down anything because it violates their personal values or beliefs. With that in mind, let's just see where this goes.

Good point, arslp. I still know relatively little about Sotomayor, and I just heard about the US SC overturning her yesterday (despite being a non-white, I actually agree with the Supremes on this one... reverse racism is equally wrong).
But this case aside, I'd like to learn more. The Judicial branch is supposed to check Legislative/Executive tyranny by applying the law as it is currently written. Justices may NOT push an agenda or legislate from the bench "for the good of the public".

Look at her opinions, new york vs. school board, the firefighters case, look at her opinions at the supreme court website archives. Quite a few of her major opinions were very similar to conservative views, even scalia wrote similar thoughts on some of the very same cases. I think she belongs on the court because she is smart, but she is not a liberal lion, she isn't even for abortion which is a no no for liberals.

The 60% number you cite is extremely misleading. Yes, she's been reversed 60% of the time that SC GRANTS CERT. They don't do that much. The 60% represents 4 cases in over a decade on the bench. The typical SC reversal rate is 65% She's issued several hundred opinions. In reality, she's reversed less than 1% of the time.
Besides, merely being overturned doesn't make a judge good or bad. Just look at Scalia. When his cases were granted cert by the SC, he was overturned 100% of the time.

You still don't understand. Yes, she's been overturned 3 times, and it might be 4 after Ricci. But in over a decade on the bench she has written hundreds of opinions, and most of the time the SC doesn't take the appeal. Even if that overturn rate goes to 67%, that's still about consistent with the average rate by the SC. Scalia and Alito were overturned on 100% of their appeals before they were appointed to the SC. Overall, Sotomayor's been overturned less than 1% of the time.

5 times. And yes, that's where the 60% number comes from, but most people think that the SC hears an appeal from every case, when it is very rare that that happens. So posters saying that the SC corrects her more than half the time are completely incorrect.
Feel what you will about her attitudes towards gender discrimination cases, but her actual record from the bench is excellent. That's my only point.

If your going to get that technical then you should ask other hispanics not just Puerto Ricans. We incorporate all our history in everything that we do from our foods to our dancing. I can't speak about others but I know me and my family are very proud of our heritage and never deny who we are.
