We've been spending about 4% of GDP on DoD which is near 40 year lows. It's affordable and sustainable. Our spending on public schools K-12 on a per capita basis is in the top 5 of the western democracies, but our performance is abysmal. IMO this is because of failed famililes and the Teacher's Union, not inadquate spending. The debate on GW continues, as it should. There are credible scientists on both sides of the issue. Lets de-politicize GW and let the scientists continue their research.

National health isn't perfect, but as the May 2007 study showed, it's better than what we've got in the US.

There have been books written on the 'surpluses' by Allen Smith among others that show how surpluses were spent at the end of every fiscal year. The next started at zero, and a surplus created at the end of the year. I actually didn't think Clinton was that bad. Though I take offense on this matter. No, I don't agree with your 'mixed' economy. Not to mention Germany recently had to restructure their system bc of a 10bil shortfall. They also had to raise taxes on an "extra premium" on policyholders. They have also had to try to insulate them from frivolous visits, by having consultation fees and prescription charges. It is about restructuring HOW insurance works (see Whole Foods healthcare plan), gov run systems create waste, shortages, rationing, and frivolous visits.
Why is our knee-jerk reaction to run to the government for protection? Why should the government take on MY smoking addiction? You shouldn't have to pay for my medical expenses that result. The same with obesity related illnesses. I shouldn't have to pay for someone else's life decisions, and vise versa. When gov takes on 50% of the costs, private insurance firms are helped, and the people are hurt, not the other way around.

You're looking for the socialist answer. The gov repeatedly extends coverage to people who make more and more, thus taking them out of the pool for competition. Businesses take advantage of this by not having to reduce costs. They also pay a hefty price tag regardless of how much care they receive. When you shelter 80% of the people, there is no one to compete over. One size fits all? From someone who wants FEDERAL healthcare?

One for those who can afford it, and long lines for the other. We need a solution for all. The choices for non-gov plans under universal HC are too expensive, bc you remove the competition and will to compete.
Whatever problems the Germans are having, they don't come close to our having tens of millions of uninsured. And their per capita spending on health care is still less than ours, but with similar or better outcomes in terms of life expectancy, infant mortality, etc. Generally speaking, when someone gets the same or better results for less $, it means their system is more efficient.
That is because we are trying to have it both ways. We need to invest in preventative care, and stop trying to cover EVERYONE at ALL TIMES. If it's free people will use more of it, since they have paid a fixed percentage already in taxes.

...Look don't make me into some devil who thinks no one should have care. Car insurance? If you develop MS and have coverage, then your coverage provides care, you can sue them if they don't. I wouldn't cover someone who has the flu going to the emergency room, I wouldn't have the gov cover conditions that were brought on by your own life decisions. You generalize over all these people NOT covered, but fail to realize that over 250,000,000 ARE covered.
If you develop a disability you may be able to keep coverage, (though capitated plans impose lifetime spending limits on all conditions, including MS, spinal cord injury, etc.) But if you're born with a disability or develop it as a child, you're out of luck, which is why gov. programs were developed to begin with. I wouldn't cover someone with the flu going to an ER either, most (all?) Medicaid programs have "prior approval" or "med. necessary" clauses, as do private insurers.

We've been spending about 4% of GDP on DoD which is near 40 year lows. It's affordable and sustainable. Our spending on public schools K-12 on a per capita basis is in the top 5 of the western democracies, but our performance is abysmal. IMO this is because of failed famililes and the Teacher's Union, not inadquate spending. The debate on GW continues, as it should. There are credible scientists on both sides of the issue. Lets de-politicize GW and let the scientists continue their research.

I find it interesting how when someone uploads a video like this they allow comments from ALL users but when a rightwinger uploads a video more often than not they delete comments they don't like because they are COWARDS who FEAR free speech. Honestly - and non-ideologically: For most of us, whether we pay 12 cents of every dollar we make to a private health insurance or 12 cents of every dollar in taxes to pay for health insurance - same thing.What matters is the quality of care....unless you are an economic taliban.
One more thing: My father used to be a highly-skilled surgeon. He operated. All the time. His US colleagues spend a lot of time filling out forms. That is a waste of skills. In any system.

I looked up both these stories.The one from Canada seems to be from May 2000, though it's been reposted, the one from Wales is 2004. This past year I personally know a friend who had to wait weeks for radiation treatments for breast cancer. There is a growing "health tourism" industry of Americans going overseas for treatment, not to mention US elders going to Canada for drugs. National health isn't perfect, but as the May 2007 study showed, it's better than what we've got in the US.

There are two issues here:
1. Aside from its legitimate functions (roads, defense, etc) government doesn't do ANYTHING as well as the private sector. So the more important something is, the more important it is to have in the private sector.
2. The parents of children are those who have the responsibility to provide for their families. Any other help (financial or medical) from outside must be voluntary.

Under that logic, why shouldn't we entrust the government to do everything for us? As for defense, look at private contracting firms in Iraq (Blackwater etc). They have as many private forces as there are armymen. Infrastructure and defense are very different. What you are advocating is an expanse in our spending that encompasses 1/7 of our budget. How will we pay for it? Aren't we already in massive debt?

I was using them as an example that you CAN find the private sector in our defense. There are numerous other examples. Surplus? Clinton didn't accomplish that until his last year, which really was a surplus PROJECTION. Surpluses, by the way, are not good. It means the gov's taxes are too high, hence the tax cuts. Spending accounted for this debt, what makes you think spending will bring us out of it?

2000: $254.62 billion.

Again, you're not looking into the numbers. Those were projected budgets. Surpluses are a result of too much taxation. A small debt insures future investment abroad, one that is too large makes us impotent.

There have been books written on the 'surpluses' by Allen Smith among others that show how surpluses were spent at the end of every fiscal year. The next started at zero, and a surplus created at the end of the year. I actually didn't think Clinton was that bad. Though I take offense on this matter. The facts are that the taxes should have been lowered.

The logic I use tells me that the private sector does best for some things, gov. for others, and a mix of the two for others. You obviously believe the same, or you'd be arguing for completely privatizing the US Air Force and all sewage treatment plants. I think health care is an instance where a gov. run insurance system-as in Germany, for instance-makes a lot of sense.

No, I don't agree with your 'mixed' economy. Not to mention Germany recently had to restructure their system bc of a 10bil shortfall. They also had to raise taxes on an "extra premium" on policyholders. They have also had to try to insulate them from frivolous visits, by having consultation fees and prescription charges. It is about restructuring HOW insurance works (see Whole Foods healthcare plan), gov run systems create waste, shortages, rationing, and frivolous visits.

Why is our knee-jerk reaction to run to the government for protection? Why should the government take on MY smoking addiction? You shouldn't have to pay for my medical expenses that result. The same with obesity related illnesses. I shouldn't have to pay for someone else's life decisions, and vise versa. When gov takes on 50% of the costs, private insurance firms are helped, and the people are hurt, not the other way around.

Thus we get the worst of all worlds: subsidized profits for the HC corporations, rising tax investment. Under the German system, anyone who wants to can use the gov. system, or they can go private. You're looking for the socialist answer. The gov repeatedly extends coverage to people who make more and more, thus taking them out of the pool for competition. Businesses take advantage of this by not having to reduce costs. They also pay a hefty price tag regardless of how much care they receive. When you shelter 80% of the people, there is no one to compete over. One size fits all? From someone who wants FEDERAL healthcare?

One for those who can afford it, and long lines for the other. We need a solution for all. Whatever problems the Germans are having, they don't come close to our having tens of millions of uninsured. And their per capita spending on health care is still less than ours, but with similar or better outcomes in terms of life expectancy, infant mortality, etc. Generally speaking, when someone gets the same or better results for less $, it means their system is more efficient.

...Look don't make me into some devil who thinks no one should have care. Car insurance? If you develop MS and have coverage, then your coverage provides care, you can sue them if they don't. I wouldn't cover someone who has the flu going to the emergency room, I wouldn't have the gov cover conditions that were brought on by your own life decisions. You generalize over all these people NOT covered, but fail to realize that over 250,000,000 ARE covered.

If you develop a disability you may be able to keep coverage, (though capitated plans impose lifetime spending limits on all conditions, including MS, spinal cord injury, etc.) But if you're born with a disability or develop it as a child, you're out of luck, which is why gov. programs were developed to begin with. I wouldn't cover someone with the flu going to an ER either, most (all?) Medicaid programs have "prior approval" or "med. necessary" clauses, as do private insurers.
