Hill managed to qualify on the front row on ALL race weekends in '96. He was an incredible driver, and definitely deserved his championship. He was pretty much the only one who faced the might of Michael Schumacher and Bennetton by himself.
@CitizenZon3 Aha so you noticed it then, clever boy, I was looking for some vids of Danish F1 drivers to slag off, cant find any though, why is that? ;-)
@ikelleners And he would still get is arse kicked by young punks back in his prime if those young punks were called Hamilton or Vettel and were racing him back then. Would he give them a fight? Shure. Would he clean all the trophys? No way in hell!
@ikelleners Racing in Schueys prime days (98 on) in my mind, specially 2000 onwards, was not that diferent from nowadays. hamilton, and Vettel, Alonso would win as much as him, no doubt in my mind. Alosno raced schuey, he also raced Hamilton,(when hamilton did not have any F1 racing experience). We all know the results, we have got a good point of reference from there.
People might say what they want but simply put, Schuey did not have rivals he had to fight to achieve is stats (besides Mika and Alonso). With todays racers would he win? Shure. Would he give them a fight? Shure thing. He still is a awesome driver. Would he clean all the stats up? Never in a life time!
@Tuscopa 2002 and 2004 were to easy for him, yes. To an extent 2001 as well. In 2003 for example he certainly had to fight for it, both Montoya and Raikkonen had a shot at it. Given that he raced against Raikkonen , Montoya and Alonso in that time, and almost won in 2006 despite a poor Ferrari for the first half the season, I dont see why he wouldnt do just as good today, provided the car was as good. No matter who you are, if the car aint dominant, you wont be either.
Both montoya and Raikonen did not have a car as good as the Ferrai. Certanily not on the reliability level. Raikonen is not a great champion, never was. He is fast and that´s it. H is not into F1 seriously, as he proved time and time again. Montoya, on the other hand, his/was amazing!.He simply did not have the car for Schuey. If he did..he would smoke him in many races. Schuey indeed did not have true competition (besides Mika and Alonso-with competitive cars)
@Tuscopa Car, perhaps (though the BMW had a mighty engine), but what they did have was the Michelin tire. I also think Raikkonen proved who is the better driver out of him and Montoya from 2005-2006.
@MetaKnightsKirby Relating the engine, the BMW was indeed a beast. Whish engines like that were still around :) Relating the Michelin tyres. I would give them 50/50 to the Bridgestones. They were better in some places, worse in others. In my opinion Montoya was loosing will to race from 2005 onwards. Raikkonen, lost that a bit later. But its all down to opinions, and I respect yours.
They where both great drivers and the reason i wached F1 during those days....when damon stopped i stopped wachting. Many thanks to Hill and Schumacher for the entertainment in the 90's!!!!!!!!!!!
This video shows how much of a "better" person Hill is than that Sky News newsreader. The newsreader just HAS to point out that "many" still belive bla bla. Damon shows that he is a true gentleman and admits to not having Schumacher's skill. Great bloke.
Hill embodies what motor racing should be about. I'm a Schumacher fan but it has to be said ... Hill has a lot of that old World decency about him, something that's sadly lacking these days. Even as an Irishman lol I take my hat off to him ... a true gentleman.
here is a guy who knows how to speak and isn't jealous like others like barrichello or villeneuve or montoya who think they are the best and they weren't, aren't, and they will never be as good as schumi
Yes and especially in '93 he didn't look too bad on Prost's side! In '94 he clearly had problems with the car first but of course he wasn't a match for Senna anyway.
Saying that Michael Schumacher was the greatest of his era (which includes Hill himself) is very honest. Nice guy that's for sure!
@mallamoozoo the thing is, that he is an unfair bastard. See his unfair blockings(while overtaking and lapping) or the famous penalty he gave schumacher at monaco. he is a bastard if there ever was one.
And above all, let us never forget that , at heart, a pure racing driver isnt about the points collection of race wins but the true spirit of speed and skill in qualifying poles - thats the acid test of a drivers real talent - where the glory is - and let us never forget Senna's crushing supremacy of 28-4, often by whole seconds per lap, in 2 consecutive seasons, over a team-mate who was arguably the second best driver of all time!
oh my god! fuck off haters! schumacher was a legend no argument, even with a car that ran five seconds faster than anything else i bet you couldn't win 7 championships, schumacher won '95 and challenged for '97 and '98 in slower cars so he is one fo the greatest of all time, now get a life...
ok but in all seriousness, schumacher's 7 titles are a testiment to his abilities AND the team he worked with...
either way, best car or not, cheating or clean, he won 7 titles!
villeneuve was clearly not the best driver on the grid 1996-1997, he underperformed even, he struggled in the wet, he crashed often, and schumacher was by a country mile better than him, clearly the class of the field...
I don't hate him - i hate idiots like you who think that "cheating or clean, 7 titles means he was clearly the class of the field." It's just moronic- you are effectively saying stats are all that matter-regardless of circumstance - it is the mentality of a simpleton like Murray Walker. Is that the standard of analytical skill you set the bar at? Your only saving grace is you at least acknowledge Senna was better- but its irrelevant - support from a fool is as useless as opposition from a fool.
i'm not saying he deserved all of his titles, wait, let me think... huh... yes he did... regardless of weather he had the best car, if he finished on top of the points by the season's end, he deserves the title because he scored more points than anybody else, the only exception to this maybe 1994 but considering he was disqualified twice and missed two races, as a driver but not a man, he still deserved it...
every champion had needed a great car if not the best on the grid INCLUDING senna...
you do hate schumacher, i've never met anybody who would go to such an extend as to basically spam on every single schumacher tribute video, interview of schumacher, interview regarding schumacher etc... and no, i didn't mean stats are all that matter but just the fact that his stats are so much better than anybody elses, if he were to have won a race this season, his 92 wins would equal senna and prost combined!
doesn't make his the absolute greatest but certainly among them...
I go to this extent because thats the scale of the mission - there are morons like you out there who STILL think that its all about stats, when there are plenty of examples of inferior drivers with superior stats - Schui is just one of them, but you are noobs brainwashed by the star factor of Ferrari and Schui - its just marketing bullshit - like saying michael jackson was the best musician because he sold the most records - its just pop marketing bullshit!
i'm not saying schumacher is the best, just up there...
michael jackson wasn't the best but damn close to it...
do you see what i mean? and schumacher's stats aren't just a result of his team and the cars he drove, he could win in lesser cars like the '92 and '93 benetton's and the mid 90s ferraris... not to mension he challenged for the title in '97 ferrari that had no pace at the front of the grid...
WHAT? Schui won 1 race in 92 and 1 in 93 - just 2 in his first 38 GP and none in 2005 9USA was not a race as all but 3 teams failed to start). Hardly a regular winner in lesser cars. (And even Brundle who never won a single race wouldve won in 92 but for engine failure whilst leading near the end - so the car wsn't too shabby.)
And Michael Jackson was just a pop star - not a proper muso - thats my poit - stats dont mean someone is the Real McCoy!
what do you mean?? so you're going to focus on what were essentially his first two season and say that he only won 2 races? that's still mighty impressive... what about when he got into his grove and put the '96 ferrari on the top spot 3 times and the '97 ferrari on top 5 times... not to mension challenging for the '98 title and so on... he WAS a regular winner in slower cars the '05 ferrari? nobody could've won in that but hey, he finished 3rd didn't he? that's impressive...

Haha, your still at it. Its amazing how much of your life you have dedicated to this man you despise so much.
About Michael Jackson however, you couldnt be more wrong. He has the ONLY writing credits for Billie Jean and Beat It. Two of the greatest pop songs of all time and somehow he isnt talented? Not to mind all the other great songs he wrote and the fact he was the greatest pop performer of all time.
You cant even pick a good analogy to diss Schumacher with.
You are just bitter that i have demolished the shumacher myth. {snigger}
As for my analogy its perfect - michael jackson couldn't even play air guitar much less a real instrument - he wasn't even a musician you spastic just a pop star - which everyone with a brain knows isnt a real muso but a plastic puppet frontman for the real songwriters - your understanding of music industry is obviously as shallow as your knowledge of motor-racing.

No, Mallamoozoo you are a sad loser who has no friends. You spend all your time on youtube doing this. You give lengthy responses to people on at least 10 videos per day despite your claims that it takes you a couple of mins. You spend hours doing this every week.
And no you complete retard Michael Jackson did write many of his own songs. Hence he has the writing credits. Thats why he is in the songwriters hall of fame while someone like Elvis is not.
1. 10 comments per day? It's called cut and paste!
2. Bullshit - Eddie Van Halen did the guitar on beat it - Michael jackson just did karaoke singalong - in my jukebox database I have Beat It filed under Van Halen!
You know you spend hours on this so deny it all you want.
Secondly, Eddie Van Halen couldnt write a song as good as Beat it for Van Halen so why do you reckon he would for Michael Jackson? Van Halen wrote the solo for Beat It, thats it. He didnt write any of the song so if you have it filed under Van Halen thats pretty dumb, which makes sense since its you.
Ha, believe that if you want. Proves the point that you are an idiot even more. You are doing your usual of making up stuff now since Van Halen isnt even credited on the album notes. You can be pretty sure if he wrote the song he'd be credited with it or at least have made some claim to have written it in the last 26 years. Just cause he plays a guitar part doesnt mean he wrote it. Kirk Hammett isnt credited on loads of Metallica songs and he plays lots of solos.
For fucksake man did you study ANY math at school - i dont expect you to understan 2nd order non linear differential equations - but for godsake at least comprehend the concept of "mean" or "average" or "strikerate" - You are counting his total wins nearly equalling prost and Senna without thinking that he was IN amost as many races as Senna, Fangio and Clark combined!
funnt how schumacher has a better strikerate in points, wins and podiums than senna anyway... senna and prost together equals (i may not be 100% accurate but i'm pretty close)
S&P 359 grand prix starts - schumacher 248
S&P 92 wins - schumacher 91
S&P 182 podiums - schumacher 154
S&P ~1370 points - schumacher ~1360
S&P 7 championships - schumacher 7
in 111 less starts... so don't bang on about strikerates when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about...
I thought you said somewhere youve been watching F1 for 15 years but you're mathematical methodology is as of a 15 year old! You clearly dont understand basic set theory and counting techniques- there is ZERO validity in comparing the sum of S @ P's number of GP and Schui's sum - for 2 reasons.
1. Prost's and Senna's were 100% overlapped.
2. Schui's GP weren't the same events (except about a 40 GP overlap) so circumstances were not equivalent.
uh, no you have me confused with somebody else, i'm 16 years old and i've followed the sport since '99 and i've watched it since '03...
i'm just saying, schumacher's stats don't 'prove' how good he is but we all know that lesser drivers would not have achieved the same things in the same car... barrichello was an excellent driver and he moved over once!!!!!!!!!! in his entire time at ferrari!!!!!!!!!! and they gave that victory back in the US anyway!!!!!!!!!!
Oh - I thought you must be about 25 to 30. Well im not gonna argue with a 16 year old - its pointless - like an F1 driver racing a junior go-kart driver.
Actually for your age then you do actually have a good understanding of F1 so my apologies for previous criticisms of your intelligence - they were criticisms assuming you were much older and therefore should know better - but for your age you are doing well. Stick with it!
Instead of this contrived 'Sum of Senna and Prosts GP total - which is absolutely meaningless - its not a statistical parameter any trained statistician would apply or even bother measuring as its meaningless to any conclusions - just measure the scores with conventional well developed parameters.
Eliminating all races with terminal mechanical failure- all 3 drivers have a win strikerate (ie wins / finishes) of about 40%. As Senna and Prost had tougher competition (each other) they were better!
Then you could modulate that rate by a "coefficient of mechanical superiority" Schui with by far the best cars in history overall, scores the lowest of all 3.
Then divide by a 'co-efficient of team-orders' ( ROFL) and Schuis strikerate becomes mediocre in the table of the champs.
Note: even without these modulations - just raw strikerates, Fangio woops Schui and Clark matches him (but of course they were in different eras so its just as invalid as comparing Schui's rate to Sennas and Prosts)
yeah ofcoarse a co-efficicent of team orders -.-... austria '02 which was negated by the US GP the same year... and uh, uh.... um, let me think.... is that all???? yeah i think it is...
and prost and senna used to get the team to revolve around them the same way...
senna at lotus in '86 and '87???
prost at ferrari in '90????
it comes with being an elite driver and don't say schumacher wasn't...
prost prefered to out think his opponents rather than out race them (like fittipaldi) although he was capable, he never had the ability to truly crush his opponents like senna, schumacher and clark so to say that he was better is a bit biased...
@wolfmother4eva I igree....but the era of senna and prost is most .....lauda, mansell...piquet...rosberg.....most brilhant drivers....if only one this drivers( or senna, or prost...or mansell or piquet) competing alone, wins 10 championships....
Its not his fault he was better than the rest. He made a few dirty moves early in his career, but nobody has any qualms with Hills tricks in 95' and Schumi still walked the championship. Schumacher had the greatest driving sytle of any and he was always on the limit. A Born Champion and he was always there or there abouts most years he didn't win the championship. You are just bitter courtdar.
Who!? If you're gonna disgrace him spell his name correctly at least. I think DC's persepective on the BBC is pretty good actually. I've uploaded quali from Imola in 94 if anyone's interested. Nice upload F1archives :-)
Seems that you have no clue about F1..." mansell, hill, villeneuve, hakkinen" "having little competition can do that!" 3 of those 4 drivers have raced 1999-2000 when schumacher won his 3rd title...yet he was very close to winning 1997,1998 championships..if i were you i would have stayed silent..your embarrassing yourself
If i were you, i would have stayed silent too. Clearly you're a Schumacher fan, so i see no point on argueing with you about who's best. But ask yourself, howcome such a good pilot (and he clearly was) doesnt have any AMAZING drive moments like many of the other pilots? Think about it.
thank u Hill.. for not being jealous about schumi.. like others..

He didnt write any of the song so if you have it filed under Van Halen thats pretty dumb, which makes sense since its you.

Van Halen did the leaD BREAK (SOLO) THE RHYTHM SECTION THE BRIDGES THE INTRO - EVERYTHING - MICHAEL JACKSON JUST SANG LIKE A EUNOCH!
mallamoozoo 2 years ago
Ha, believe that if you want. Proves the point that you are an idiot even more. You are doing your usual of making up stuff now since Van Halen isnt even credited on the album notes. You can be pretty sure if he wrote the song he'd be credited with it or at least have made some claim to have written it in the last 26 years. Just cause he plays a guitar part doesnt mean he wrote it. Kirk Hammett isnt credited on loads of Metallica songs and he plays lots of solos.
I love you Mallamoozoo.

WAKE UP!
mallamoozoo 2 years ago
funnt how schumacher has a better strikerate in points, wins and podiums than senna anyway... senna and prost together equals (i may not be 100% accurate but i'm pretty close)
S&P 359 grand prix starts - schumacher 248
S&P 92 wins - schumacher 91
S&P 182 podiums - schumacher 154
S&P ~1370 points - schumacher ~1360
S&P 7 championships - schumacher 7
in 111 less starts... so don't bang on about strikerates when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about...
wolfmother4eva 2 years ago
I thought you said somewhere youve been watching F1 for 15 years but you're mathematical methodology is as of a 15 year old! You clearly dont understand basic set theory and counting techniques- there is ZERO validity in comparing the sum of S @ P's number of GP and Schui's sum - for 2 reasons.
1. Prost's and Senna's were 100% overlapped.
2. Schui's GP weren't the same events (except about a 40 GP overlap) so circumstances were not equivalent.
Please complete your education then come back.
mallamoozoo 2 years ago
uh, no you have me confused with somebody else, i'm 16 years old and i've followed the sport since '99 and i've watched it since '03...
i'm just saying, schumacher's stats don't 'prove' how good he is but we all know that lesser drivers would not have achieved the same things in the same car... barrichello was an excellent driver and he moved over once!!!!!!!!!! in his entire time at ferrari!!!!!!!!!! and they gave that victory back in the US anyway!!!!!!!!!!
schumacher was among the best
wolfmother4eva 2 years ago
Oh - I thought you must be about 25 to 30. Well im not gonna argue with a 16 year old - its pointless - like an F1 driver racing a junior go-kart driver.
Actually for your age then you do actually have a good understanding of F1 so my apologies for previous criticisms of your intelligence - they were criticisms assuming you were much older and therefore should know better - but for your age you are doing well. Stick with it!
mallamoozoo 2 years ago
Instead of this contrived 'Sum of Senna and Prosts GP total - which is absolutely meaningless - its not a statistical parameter any trained statistician would apply or even bother measuring as its meaningless to any conclusions - just measure the scores with conventional well developed parameters.
Eliminating all races with terminal mechanical failure- all 3 drivers have a win strikerate (ie wins / finishes) of about 40%. As Senna and Prost had tougher competition (each other) they were better!
mallamoozoo 2 years ago
Then you could modulate that rate by a "coefficient of mechanical superiority" Schui with by far the best cars in history overall, scores the lowest of all 3.
Then divide by a 'co-efficient of team-orders' ( ROFL) and Schuis strikerate becomes mediocre in the table of the champs.
Note: even without these modulations - just raw strikerates, Fangio woops Schui and Clark matches him (but of course they were in different eras so its just as invalid as comparing Schui's rate to Sennas and Prosts)
mallamoozoo 2 years ago
yeah ofcoarse a co-efficicent of team orders -.-... austria '02 which was negated by the US GP the same year... and uh, uh.... um, let me think.... is that all???? yeah i think it is...
and prost and senna used to get the team to revolve around them the same way...
senna at lotus in '86 and '87???
prost at ferrari in '90????
it comes with being an elite driver and don't say schumacher wasn't...
wolfmother4eva 2 years ago
senna was better but prost never...
prost prefered to out think his opponents rather than out race them (like fittipaldi) although he was capable, he never had the ability to truly crush his opponents like senna, schumacher and clark so to say that he was better is a bit biased...
wolfmother4eva 2 years ago
@wolfmother4eva I igree....but the era of senna and prost is most .....lauda, mansell...piquet...rosberg.....most brilhant drivers....if only one this drivers( or senna, or prost...or mansell or piquet) competing alone, wins 10 championships....
guigo00018 2 years ago
So you are saying
1. Jaques Villeneuve s better than Gilles because he won a WC but his Dad didn't. Moronic!
2. Keke rosberg and Alan Jones were better than Stirling Moss.
3. Jack Brabham was better than Jim Clark
MORONIC!

"... only two of his world championships came in years with a highly competitive field."
Even if this were true, and I'm not agreeing that it is, even one world championship in a highly competitive year would make Schumi great.
Two makes him one of the greatest.
Five in a row makes him the legend he is today.
unrulyrascal 2 years ago 2
He is not and will never be the greatest...why? Because he was a cheater
terga1 2 years ago
Its not his fault he was better than the rest. He made a few dirty moves early in his career, but nobody has any qualms with Hills tricks in 95' and Schumi still walked the championship. Schumacher had the greatest driving sytle of any and he was always on the limit. A Born Champion and he was always there or there abouts most years he didn't win the championship. You are just bitter courtdar.

coultdar is a fool..

Who!? If you're gonna disgrace him spell his name correctly at least. I think DC's persepective on the BBC is pretty good actually. I've uploaded quali from Imola in 94 if anyone's interested. Nice upload F1archives :-)

@courtdar
Seems that you have no clue about F1..." mansell, hill, villeneuve, hakkinen" "having little competition can do that!" 3 of those 4 drivers have raced 1999-2000 when schumacher won his 3rd title...yet he was very close to winning 1997,1998 championships..if i were you i would have stayed silent..your embarrassing yourself
aduka19 1 year ago
@aduka19
If i were you, i would have stayed silent too. Clearly you're a Schumacher fan, so i see no point on argueing with you about who's best. But ask yourself, howcome such a good pilot (and he clearly was) doesnt have any AMAZING drive moments like many of the other pilots? Think about it.
