@dathrorana You may need to heat up the converter with a propane torch. The idea is to heat the inside so it expands. Then you will need a correct size 02 sensor socket and breaker bar is also a must. There is alot of heat extremes going on in the exhaust system and also moisture. This makes a breeding ground for frozen and rusty parts. Oh --- be very cautious and aware of fuel lines when attempting this. You don't want to blow yourself or your car up. Good luck.
@sbond1963: Yes on both. The 'Smog Check' program here in California consists of 3 main parts. A dyno test to check the exhaust gasses, a functional check to make sure all the emissions components are working fine, and a visual inspection to see that none of the emissions components are modified, damaged, missing, etc. Anything other than stock has to have a CARB (California Air Resource Board) number. It doesn't take a scientist to see a modified oxygen sensor trust me I'm a smog tech.
@TheBodvarg: no its not. P0420 is "Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold" and its bank 1. A misfire code would be P0301, 302, 303, or whatever cylinder it is. P0300 would be a random/multiple misfire.
I'm guessing you don't live in California. That would be considered 'modified' and would fail the smog test. Plus most of the time P0420 codes take a while to come back on so even disconnecting the battery can get rid of the light for a while. Modifying that sensor isn't going to do you any good.
@banuelosEIGHTY7 We don't have smog tests at the pipe where I live, only OBD. My ecu has gone through the necessary relearn cycles after being reset and has not come back with the code 7k miles later. They would have failed me otherwise, so this worked in my application-- and will for many others. Thx for watching.
@moccina Have a 02 Camry I4 with the damn 95% efficiency P0420. The part number you mention - are 02's generic in fitment? Will that diameter work for me?
@sbond1963 I believe the thread diameter / count is the same for all 02 sensors, which is 18 x 1.5mm. You will know right away when you try to screw the defouler on-- but I am 99% sure this is the case and you will not have an issue with your Yota. Good luck and thx for watching!
@tickleswj2000 Hi, I did not erase the p0420 code manually with my scanner. It went away when I reset the battery and has not come back due to the defouler install. Thx for watching.
@tickleswj2000 Sorry to hear that. Don't rule out the following: coolant temp sensor / leaking exh manifold / retarded spark timing which all can trigger the code as well. Sometimes you can find dealer bulletins online regarding trouble codes and common causes / solutions found by dealerships of the certain make/ model. Good luck-- keep us updated.
you may want to mention that if in fact there is a cat convertor blocked up issue, while this will have the light go away, you are not fixing the problem and actually damaging the engine by not letting the exhaust gases go out. Watch scotty kilmer's video here on how to test catalytic convertor to understand what i mean.
@rahulbhushan Hi there, yes you should make sure it truly is not the converter that is faulty, you are correct. My solution was based on the premise of having ruled out the converter as a culprit. If I remember correctly, you can tell if the cat is bad by listening to the muffler at idle --- if it "burps" and stumbles it means it's clogged. It will also stink like rotten eggs. Thx for watching.
MAN I LOVE YOU! I HAVE AUDI A6 V6 2.8 L 1999 234000 MILES. MY LEFT CAT DIED AND I COULD NOT PASS DEQ. YESTERDAY I INSTALLED SPARK PLUG NON-FOULER. KNECHT'S CARRIES IT IN STOCK FOR $3.99 A SET. TODAY I PASSED DEQ AND MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS OFF. GREAT WAY TOO SAVE HUNDREDS IN 15 MINUTES. P.S. I DID IT ON BOTH O2 SENSORS JUST TO BE SAFE. AND AGAIN LOVE YOU! ( I AM NOT FAG)
@JDMprince I picked up the defouler at AutoZone--- most of the big chains carry the kit. The 0BD2 code reader I got online a good 4 years ago from Amazon I think. I paid about $40, and I think the price is about the same today.
Fantastic!!!!!!!

@banuelosEIGHTY7 Is California that bad they are under cars looking for spark plug anti foulers? Would the inspection folks really know what it is?
sbond1963 2 weeks ago
I noticed you cleared the maintenance light, but did you clear the p0420 code with a scanner or did it go off by itself after the defouler install?
Thanks

@moccina The whole install went smooth, cannot get the code to shut off. Changed cat and both oxygen sensors, still no luck. Very frustrating!
