My name is Gboyega Adelaja, I recorded Ambrose Campbell's funeral and I posted it to You tube. I had the opportunity to have interviewed him in Plymouth in 2004. You can search "omodagburewe" on You tube, this will lead you to a 9 minutes trailer on my interview with Late Papa Ambrose Campbell. I would want to release it to the world one day and vest it in a foundation to develop music in Nigeria. I live and work in Abuja now. Gboyega Adelaja +2348068785349
Ambrose Campbell played at my uncle Ola & Aunty Irene Dosunmu's Abalabi Club and Club Afrique in London in the 1950's. My Aunty died in 1972, I have never met my Uncle Ola or their Son Tokunboh, hopefully one day, my search continues...this was very interesting...prayers to the family...
I am researching 1950's London Music Scene and I came across the Abalabi and Club Afrique . Do you know if this has been formely archived anywhere as this is an important piece of Social History
Not that I know of, I just googled Ola Dosunmu and found out about his clubs through reading about Ambrose Campbell, I have a photo of Uncle Ola and Aunty Irene standing in front of the bar at Abalabi, but that is it. Sorry I can't help you anymore, but I would be interested in any info you might find out about them and their music clubs...
Ladi this is the first time Im hearing about your dad and a big hug to you brother for this great loss. But just know that you not alone because you have got millions of brothers and sisters out there; we the YORUBAS where your roots are! Love you broda
chistopher I wonder if you knew my father....my father was ver very very close to ambrose..though I just met my father a year ago.....he regarded ambrose as a father.....and as one of the wisest men he had ever met
There went one of the greatest Nigerian muscians off all times. May his soul rest in peace. Certainly muscians in Nigeria ought to celebrate his life, lets home they wi;;.
Although I never had an oppurtunity to meet him in this life,I look forward to in the next. As a Leon Russell Lifer I have heard many words spoken of the man.I look forward to the day to hear his wisdom in his own words.
Although the whole notion of video at funerals is rather strange and new to many I think I got a sense of respect from the video. It seems as if that was Shensema's intention. As a Leon Russell fan I will miss Ambrose's smiling presence very much. His nuanced percussion and gentle wisdom was a marvelous foundation and the cap to a wonderful music career, which was cornerstoned by Ambrose's great wisdom and soothing spirit. Rest easy, sweet prince.
Ambrose was a great, talented and wise man; he will be missed, but we must rejoice in the purity and grace of his life. I feel as though this video is a strange thing to post.
RIP brother.
