the frets on my guitar are worn and the strings are really dirty ( and they haven't been replaced in 4 years ) and I don't seem to get clear squeals. Is this because of the problems of my guitar? also the pickups are rusty. love my 80's strat... it's so 80's! :B

but try using the g string 7th fret... seems to work best for me ... mayhap add just a touch of vibrato for the sound... but o_o .. for pinch harmonics its all about the right hand...

@MrRiffNinja It does NOT make any sense, hitting a guitar string with your thumb should make a sound as if you were strumming like it does for everyone else as it happens for me.

I don't fucking understand how it just magically makes no sound happen or makes the string squeal because neither of those happens for me, all it does is strum the guitar.

@TehKrakerzGuy yeah but.. then you're using too much thumb, it just needs to slightly touch it.. but REALLy slightly... just hit it with your pick.. and then the string should flick against the skin of your thumb... but it can only slightly, very slightly touch...

btw, using an electric, or acoustic? its harder on acoustic guitars....

and remember, the more gain, the easier this gets.... if you really dont get it.. i supose i could make a vid aswel.... just let me know

Haha, I came by this technique when all I had was my classical acoustic, being self-taught, I didnt' realize how I'd done it. I tried replicating it again and again and didn't get anything. ONe time I did it again and noticed that my thumb actually kind of hit the string on accident. Lo and behold, with a little practice, I learned how to do the technique on my acoustic. Now I have an electric and it sonds cooler. :D But still sweet on the acoustic guitar.

@manolovillacritica Nope :) You can even do it on an acoustic, although it's quieter. The rule of thumb is: More distortion = Easier squealies. Any guitar will work, juts crank up the gain and keep practicing.

@tristin183 yeah but you have a different method to do it, you have to lightly hold one finger over the string over the pups (preferably the index) then use your middle finger to pick the string.

if you do it just right you can make a pinch harmonic with just a finger

i use dunlop jazz-III pick, the own for this stuff since they are so small so you get closer to the strings automatically, and them being so pointy and hard = articulate is also important
