@fable0709 personally, I feel that Achilles Last Stand alone makes that album one of the greatest, not to mention the vastly underrated Nobody's Fault But Mine and Hots On For Nowhere
yes Aerosmith do do a good job of it, but they are two completely different versions of the song. It's like comparing apples to oranges or in this case Joe Perry to Jimmy Page they're two different guitar players completely.
As great as they were in the studio, I've never seen a shittier band live than Led Zeppelin. I'm not trying to diss them, partly because it was the last date on their 1973 tour and Plant's voice was worn out. The rest of the band soldiered on and Robert tried his best. But I've never seen a bar band worse than they sounded and it was one of the biggest disappointments I've ever had concertwise. I still love their music, though. They were incredible.
I still liked their studio stuff but another thing I didn't dig, especially being a songwriter, was that Page was a fucking thief, stealing most of "Whole Lotta Love" from a band they saw several times in NYC. Even worse, he stole a whole part of "Spirit's" song "Taurus" for "Stairway To Heaven." There are probably more. I still can't help it, though, they were great. Unlike most people I think III was their best album. A classic. "That's all I've got to say about that."
And as far as Pagey being a theif...big whoop. Mozart ripped off phrases from his counterpoint instructor. He's still one of the finest - perhaps the finest - composer of all time. Blues, folk musicians, etc. are constantly borrowing from the past, adding twists and nuance and making the music their own. Pagey should have given proper credit to Spirit and Jake Holmes for "Dazed And Confused", but you know what? He took their idea and wrote a thesis on it. The result was far superior.
Page took all those songs and made them into something the original composers would never have dreamed of. You and I certainly never would have heard "Taurus" and Jake Holmes's "Dazed and Confused". though they heavely influenced, page still added his own twists and the band did too.

You're right, but the difference between the Stones, Yardbirds, and Zeppelin was the fact that Zeppelin didn't give the overt credit to the writers, like the Stones and Yardbirds did. Consequently, the writers didn't get the money they deserved, unlike the bands who made sure to get those old blues guys both credit and royalties. There are lots of stories and rumors about how notoriously cheap Jimmy Page has always been. He sure is one creative cheapskate though!!!
Nobody's denying that he changed the songs considerably but he still knowingly used parts of other people's songs without giving them any credit. I like Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin a lot but i still can't understand why he refused to give credit to the original authors.
in this debate nobody seems to acknowledge the fact that at the time (65-69)..NOBODY heard of the old blues masters..they were obsure..at BEST..an underground popularity. EVERYBODY was heavily influenced by ,and nicking from them..including the Stones, the Beatles, Beck, and Clapton. I've always reckoned that Page figured that he diametrically changed Whole Lotta, and Dazed, I Can't Quit so much so that ..A) The songs were virtually completely diffrerent B) Nobody KNEW the originals anyway..
cont from above (below?), C) Those old blues masters were POOR (pennyless) old bastards with no record companies, no lawyers. None of which justifies /absolves Page..however, it is important to note that at that time there was NO SUCH THING as "copyright infringment" It (British Invasion) was ALL TOO NEW. Furthermore, Page was YOUNG, and he made a MISTAKE/ ERROR in judgement. What is SO fcuking hard to intellectually understand/comprehend" about that??
Finally...(cont from below/above?)..what the Page "hater's" or "negativity" dwellers always FAIL to acknowledge is..all "this" (nefarious behaviour of Page's) ENDED by the second album in 1969..one year and a half into Zep's existence! The first two albums were written/recored on the ROAD in the midst of 4-5 unprecidented, whirlwind, CONSECUTIVE tours!.They needed material..QUICK.. MAIN FACT forgotten by the hater's is Page/Zep has long, Long, LONG since given ALL due credits! So Get OVER it!!!
All the British Invasion bands, Stones, Kinks, Yardbirds etc, were lifting lyrics and riffs from their heros of the Delta Blues. It was common practice. They were basically paying homage and then transforming it into a new form of music. Page eventually credited Willie Dixon, I believe, on Led Zeppelin I.
Judging a band's corpus of live work by one concert is, quite frankly, asinine. Granted everyone (most especially the band) views the performances at the end of their '73 tour as rather ragged. However, most folks (even their critics) concede they were at their best on stage. Grab a copy of how "The West Was Won." Watch the Royal Albert Hall performance. And most certainly check out their early Danish TV performance. You'll see the tightest most inventive group of musicians ever.
Hey, maybe I wasn't clear about my feelings for this fantastic band. No matter how bad they sounded live in '73, I dug these guys and I didn't feel any different after the concert I saw. Any other tour, any other concert I would have seen and heard wouldn't have changed my mind. They were GIANTS!!!!!
The opinion is a good one. I dug "Physical Graffiti" when it came out in '75, but man, I think "Led Zeppelin III", "Zoso", and "Houses of the Holy" were their creative peak. Most people would disagree, but I love III the most because of it's eclectic feel, with the perfect mix of acoustic and electric. Remember, too, just opinions!
Not just Zeppelin's..but one of rock history's MOST UNDERATED albums......PRESENCE!!!
It is a master piece of hard rock & heavy blues originality. Written and recorded at a time when the dragon (H) was just beginning to really take hold of Page, Plant in a FULL leg cast, sitting on a stool. The FEEL from It's mixing, engineering, and producing in EACH song was ground breaking, and magnificent. If ever an album ever captured the true essance of the dark mystique, and malevolent undercurrents..
@PinkZeppelin44 - hey ya Pink Z. Kewl comment, and i wholeheartedly agree with you..however, the lyric is "the mighty arms of 'ATLAS'..(holds the heavens from the Earth)". Atlas is a Titan/ deity from ancient Greek mythology. Zuess (the King of all Greek Gods) condemned Atlas to bear the weight of the Heavens FROM resting ON the the earth) for all eternity. "To sing a song for you, I recall you used to say, "Oh baby this one's for we two", which in the end is you anyway" (Tea For One) LLLZ!
I think you're absolutely right. Plant started to dwindle around 1973, when he wasn't able to nail Stairway and Black dog in their entirety anymore.
Do you know how hard it is to find a live Stairway performance with great vocals? you have to forage through their 1971-72 bootlegs to find something that actually rivals the original. Still my favorite band though.
the earls court shows arent that spectacular. They looked bad ass but didnt play as well as earlier years. They then went down hill from there. Im talking abouut live performances.
Bonzo's playing actually got better (or more technical) as the years went on, but he never lost that swing and thump that made his sound so damn exciting.
Well, I've got dozens of live shows that, as great as the studio albums are, the live performance of most Zeppelin songs just annihilated the studio version. You must have seen an aberration because Led Zeppelin were the greatest band that ever stepped on a stage. Someone needs to get you some proper recordings of their legendary shows ie "Going To California" in '71 and "Listen To This Eddie" in '77. They will make you a fanatical believer.
I have no arguments that not only were they one of the greatest studio bands, but they kicked ass live, too. I knew at the time, starting to sing myself, that a grueling tour is so hard on a lead singer, especially a high tenor, like Plant. I love this band as much or more than every band except the Stones, the Beatles & Cream. I really don't care that Robert's voice was blown out that night, like I said(I think) it was the last concert of a huge tour. His voice is unique, unreal, an instrument.
I'm steeped in all those great bands but for me Zeppelin remain in a class by themselves. From Zep's formation in late '68 through the '72 tour, Plant's voice was probably the most powerful rock music has ever had. For a phenomenal example of Plant in early prime, check out the youtube video: "I Gotta Move - Early Led Zeppelin".
I stumbled on to this and just about wet myself. Ive always loved Aerosmiths cover of this but its so freakin crazy to hear Jimmy Page play this with LedZeppelin and get that heavier tone since he had complete control over it with LedZeppelin. Jones and Bonham are making a wall of sound and Plant is laying it down at his best...... amazing. To bad its not on CD.....
Areo Zepplein Yard Birds..Listen to how many versions there is of STEAMROLLER BLUES....Check out (youtube it) METAL THAT SOUNDS LIKE METAL RAW HA HA RAW HA HA HA

Aerosmith should have hung it up after about 1976."love in an elevator"..?Worst shit ever."rocks" was their peak ,and then they quit the drugs, and also ceased to be creative. What that band needs is some material worthy of their collective talents.
Something sounds off about this. I have another version of this song by Zep in '69 also and it sounds much different...everything tonally sounds different. The structure of the song is the same...but from the vocals to the drums, the tone of everything is different.
