He doesn't keep his eye on the ball (he looks to where he's hitting it before he makes contact), unlike Federer..... but I guess now he's number one that may be a moot point.......
I could be wrong, but I think most rackets flex like that when you make contact with the ball. It's probably more so just natural shock as you can see his hand shaking a bit as hits it.
@07herrow Keeping your eyes locked to the ball is to help yourself keep your head steady and not jerking around. As long as you can keep the head in place it doesnt matter where you are looking, some just prefer to watch where their opponent is on the other side.
@ESTslipknot15drums8D hahahah you're obviously retarded, 1) he wasn't looking at the strings, he was just keep his head still like chrisrey3156 said and 2) i wasn't demeaning his ranking at all, i know he's an amazing player dumbass
@ESTslipknot15drums8D What the hell, chill out you cunt. There's no reason to be mad about anything, fucking retard. If you hadn't started trouble, we wouldn't be in this position. Shut up.
I agree he's been brilliant lately mainly his work rate but his technique makes him inconsistent and although he might be best this year I dont think he'll dominate! fed watches where he's hit the ball even after contact his technique is perfect!
Fereder watches the ball all the way. But djokovic doesnt look at the ball when it comes close to contact. What should an intermediate tennis noob do though?
I dont understand how amateurs/beginners can even bad mouth Novak's forehand. He is number two in the WORLD. Meaning only one man in this planet is better than him. Stop hating. He is better than any of you would even dream of. PERIOD. Only guy that can critic him is his coach...
The strange thing is he looks longer at his backhand contact point than at his forehand contact point. Probably this explains why his double-handed backhand is better than his forehand.
He's watching it when it comes toward him, but he might have been tempted by looking at where he was hitting prior making contact. The idea isn't to watch the ball hit the strings - this happens three times faster or more than a wink.
Also, on freeze frames, there is only one player on Earth which always looks dead on contact point and it is Roger Federer... The idea is to focus and keep your eyes on the ball as long as you can to avoid moving your head and loosing your timing.

he has a great forehand but he takes his eyes away from the ball too early (not saying that i dont) it's just that it's easy to compare when you've seen something better. like RF's forehand.
I agree with your comment. Djokovic is fantastically talented and he know he would strike the ball fine, but he should have taken his eyes off the ball. Like you said, there is a clear difference in technique when you look at RF who not only has his laser eyes glued to the ball until impact, but who "follows through" with his eyes until well after impact. It's that kind of mental discipline and skill on the microscopic level that makes RF belong in his own elite world.
jaja nadalroddick you remind me of a quote I heard recently about people starting stupid fights and discussions on the internet; it goes like this: "Fighting on the internet is like competing at the Special Olympics; doesn't matter if you win, you are still retarded."
The point of argumentation and discussion is to understand the matter of the enquiry and elevate oneself. The only useful gain of such a thing is that of seeing, of knowing; the opinion, positions and quotes are pointless when the relations they consider are flawed and by making trial of your ideas and that of others, you can identify those mistakes which therefore avoid you from following an error. It's not a fight, it's a discussion.
Someone brilliant should be happy to be proved wrong.
Well, since so many people reply unsound comments and seem to consider a discussion pointless, I'll never be trying too hard to identify the mistakes and show how so many are wrong.
And, expression the whole idea in a limited space required some thinking... i use uncommon vocabulary simply to remain accurate and, psychologically, to force the reader to think and not react out of impressions he already has.
The eastern grip looks so difficult, my hand always blocks before finishing the hit when i try to hit with it so i stayed on semi-western grip (like Roddick).
if you look at it closely, it looks like an inbetween of semi and full western... because his knuckle isnt on a beble(sp). full western is on the bottom flat and semi is on the diag. his is on the corner.
yeah, i noticed that too. perhaps that's why he hits flatter than most people who uses full western grip. He's using extreme western, not full western.
fed doesn't look at the ball either actually. Novak is watching the ball most of the time. and he took his eyes off the ball because he is using his eyes for his follow through and where he is going to place the shot.
well really he does or at least he tries to see the ball at the point of contact. it is bad to not keep your head down because when you look ahead of the ball it puts your body slightly off balance and you cant be as accurate. its just like in golf you keep your head down toward the point of contact and your hitting arms shoulder will naturally move your head back towards the net. that it why ROGER is the best
He knows where he is going to hit it he looks at the ball just before contact then looks ahead. You can say that it's not good and not accurate w/e but I'm sure you know that many people have their own way of doing things and novak is a pretty good player last time I checked.... didn't he beat fed recently? :P . And Nadal is the best technically lol xP .
Poor comment! Federer watches the ball better than any other player - there is an article on the Internet 'Federer Vision' by Mark Papas. Your analysis of Djokovic apparently watching the follow through is wrong - no professional player needs to watch their follow through, they know where it's going - it's part of the stroke that they have practised in training. Neither do they take their eyes off the ball to 'look' where they're going to hit it - that decision has already been made!
You're a fool, a complete amateur - beginners take their eyes off the ball and make mistakes because of it. Good tennis shots are played in similar fashion to golf where the head stays still and only turns to see where the ball is going after the shot has been made - this is clearly obvious from any slow-motion videoclip of Federer's forehand and backhand.
@raku444 the fact of the matter is he is still in the top 3 and has been staying their, he has 18 career titles including his grand-slam and he can rape anyone here. so if those are horrible strokes ill take them any day. and i aint even a djokovic fan.
if people understand tennis vision and the study of it most top players use peripheral vision at contact. federer who all make big deal watching ball has contact pt. farther from body out to the side so is more able but why does federer MISHIT more fh's than any other top pro?
actually bensterk has a point, I mean look at 0:15, the ball obviously misses the sweet spot of his Wilson, it's so close to the head of his frame you kinda wonder how he got his shot off.
most pros hit in the upper portion of their racquet. check out a federer slow motion forehand. with the amount of lead they use it moves the sweet spot higher up in the racquet's frame
Ha ha ha, you don't know shit about tennis! These motions are music! He can hit you in the eye with that ball if he wants to. It is called a peripheral sight (seeing the ball and the place in the court at the same time). Go Noleeeee!!!
compare roger federer's and rafa nadal's point of visual focus with djokovics. problem solved. plus, if he could hit you in the eye with a ball, he should already know where his shot is going? looks like you dont know shit.
Looks you're stupid like a mule! I was thinking not to answer you at all, but ok. Of course he knows where his shot is going! That's the whole point! Please find someone else to reproach him the technical elements of the game, not Novak. He graduated on those when he was seven, so... Very stupid and pointless to argue with you about that any more. So long and better try to learn something from him if you can.
Well, you're not really supposed to look at the ball the whole time. Your brain has your senses all working so you have a mental image of where the ball will be. It's like how you can walk up the stairs without looking at the stairs.
Also, I think there are better forehands out there, but that's not to say this isn't a good one.
No way it's the best forehand ever. If you speak about technique, efficiency, accuracy and decent power I would say Federer's forehand is much much better.
No way this is the best forehand ever. No doubt Novak uses it like a genious(I give you that), but that's beacause its him who uses it. This kind of FH is very common in the tour(bend arm, no looking at the ball, plenty of shoulder rotation) and is really not recommended, it wastes a lot of energy, while Federer's doesn't at all. Don't believe me? you can see how much effort Novak has to do to hit it hard. HE has perfected it so that its very efficient for him, but technically that drive sucks.
I think you're confusing the efficiency of double bend and straight arm. Both work and there doesn't seem to be a better, just different for different trade-offs.
Also, I don't get why you think it's not recommended if it's very common on the tour. Not trying to be hostile, but I'd like to see a source of where you get your info.
Its not that it isn't "recommended".I play with a straight arm techinique(copied it from Fed&Nad)and my brother with a bend arm, and even though we've played the same time, it's obvios that in a drive-to-drive rally I always end up winning because the straight arm gives me a kind of control that he'll never have, it's like he(and everyone I see hitting like that in tournaments) are always trying too hard, while for me hitting any FH shot is a lot easier, I'm just telling based on my experience.
Also, your situation is very odd because the straight-arm is much harder to control. It may be because your brother and the other people are trying to muscle the ball.
I don't think it's odd, my coach says that straight arm technique opens greatly your improvisation abilities and gives you a more versatile, fluent and a LOT easier shot making(though i didn't need him to tell me, I 've experience those things in my own game, and you can see what I'm talking about if you watch Roger and Rafa play and see their amazing fluency when hitting). I should've said "straight arm is more recommended than bend arm if you want to play effortlessly". It's that ok for you?
They're pros though. Most pro's shots are "fluent" as you say. Also, Nadal seems like he muscles the ball everytime with his forehand, instead of making it seem effortlessly. I don't know what you mean by more versatile. You mean like hitting topspin to hitting flat and stuff? I don't think it matters for that. They're just different. There is no better recommended one for a general sense.
His forehand is horribly inefficient, he gets owned when a player decides to attack it and can move the ball around enough. Just watch him play live, he loses SO much energy when changing direction with the forehand.
you are crazy his forehand is efficient and nice to see!!!!howeather he isn't lose energy when changing direction because he is very explosive and reactive !!!
He's in the top 5 in the world and plays primarily a baseline game. So how exactly do you statistically say his forehand is inefficient? Do you have any backing on your statement or is that or just an opinion? Who owned him?
Now if you're referring to physics you may note he is rotating his shoulders and hips through the shot and using his arm as a whip. So where is the energy lost?
It's correct, just by bending your elbow you're alredy losing energy, the MOST efficient way of hitting is with the arm fully stretched, whichs allows the wrist to flow freely an therefore you can generate A LOT more acceleration using the least energy/impulse. Federer and Nadal are the EXACT picture of what I mean, you can see how easy is for them to generate spin and power almost effortlessly, and thats the direct consecuence of their "full strech arm" techinique.
most of the tennis pros don't look at the ball wen they'r hitting it except few players like federer.etc

raku444 2 years ago 13
@raku444 the fact of the matter is he is still in the top 3 and has been staying their, he has 18 career titles including his grand-slam and he can rape anyone here. so if those are horrible strokes ill take them any day. and i aint even a djokovic fan.

Good observations...agreed. Not saying he's not a great player but those two observations are spot on!

he mishit the ball
daigunder35 3 years ago
No he didn't. It was just about in the middle idiot.
lilhu93 3 years ago
if people understand tennis vision and the study of it most top players use peripheral vision at contact. federer who all make big deal watching ball has contact pt. farther from body out to the side so is more able but why does federer MISHIT more fh's than any other top pro?
dalmatinkaslunce 3 years ago
he didnt keep his head strait
jlsfeds 3 years ago
He's ranked third on the ATP tour. I don't know what you're talking about with your "strait".
Isn't a strait a thin body of water between two large masses of land?

He doesn't use his wrist as Federer do : less power

booooo novak still has aways to go.
liampimp12341234 3 years ago
this isnt really good because if you see he is not watching the ball the whole time and that can lead to many un forced errors
bensterk 3 years ago
well he has such a good sense of were the ball is that he doesnt need to look. i dont look at the ball when i hit forehands.
goblue237 3 years ago
actually bensterk has a point, I mean look at 0:15, the ball obviously misses the sweet spot of his Wilson, it's so close to the head of his frame you kinda wonder how he got his shot off.
(no sexual innuendo intended)
dioxinac 3 years ago
dioxinac,
most pros hit in the upper portion of their racquet. check out a federer slow motion forehand. with the amount of lead they use it moves the sweet spot higher up in the racquet's frame
TBoblp 2 years ago
hmm i didn't know that, whenever people break their strings it always happens closer to the middle though?
Roger does hit high but it's not as high as djokavic's, with marginal error he could hit his frame?
dioxinac 2 years ago
Ha ha ha, you don't know shit about tennis! These motions are music! He can hit you in the eye with that ball if he wants to. It is called a peripheral sight (seeing the ball and the place in the court at the same time). Go Noleeeee!!!
durobar 3 years ago
compare roger federer's and rafa nadal's point of visual focus with djokovics. problem solved. plus, if he could hit you in the eye with a ball, he should already know where his shot is going? looks like you dont know shit.
Jibb321 3 years ago
Looks you're stupid like a mule! I was thinking not to answer you at all, but ok. Of course he knows where his shot is going! That's the whole point! Please find someone else to reproach him the technical elements of the game, not Novak. He graduated on those when he was seven, so... Very stupid and pointless to argue with you about that any more. So long and better try to learn something from him if you can.
durobar 3 years ago
he isn't looking at the ball at the piont of contact...
360backhand 3 years ago 2
hey, he doesn't loke at the ball all the way.... I have the same issue..
2002korea 3 years ago
Fed is the best ever, but this is the best forehand ever. So many comments from folks that don't know anything about tennis.
NoledoTokija 3 years ago
how could this forehand be the "best ever" if halfway through his shot, he's not even watching the ball? that's fundamentally horrible.
djkross123 3 years ago
Well, you're not really supposed to look at the ball the whole time. Your brain has your senses all working so you have a mental image of where the ball will be. It's like how you can walk up the stairs without looking at the stairs.
Also, I think there are better forehands out there, but that's not to say this isn't a good one.

muscle memory
balongzkie80 3 years ago
correct
matkimi 3 years ago
I don't think muscle memory explains why he isn't looking at the ball, more of why he can swing similarly every single time.
i8myshirt 3 years ago
i agree...though it seems unorthodox, it can heighten his sense of where to place the ball
str8up10190 3 years ago
No way it's the best forehand ever. If you speak about technique, efficiency, accuracy and decent power I would say Federer's forehand is much much better.
mysteriekiller 3 years ago
No way this is the best forehand ever. No doubt Novak uses it like a genious(I give you that), but that's beacause its him who uses it. This kind of FH is very common in the tour(bend arm, no looking at the ball, plenty of shoulder rotation) and is really not recommended, it wastes a lot of energy, while Federer's doesn't at all. Don't believe me? you can see how much effort Novak has to do to hit it hard. HE has perfected it so that its very efficient for him, but technically that drive sucks.
YoSoujiro 3 years ago
I think you're confusing the efficiency of double bend and straight arm. Both work and there doesn't seem to be a better, just different for different trade-offs.
Also, I don't get why you think it's not recommended if it's very common on the tour. Not trying to be hostile, but I'd like to see a source of where you get your info.
i8myshirt 3 years ago
Its not that it isn't "recommended".I play with a straight arm techinique(copied it from Fed&Nad)and my brother with a bend arm, and even though we've played the same time, it's obvios that in a drive-to-drive rally I always end up winning because the straight arm gives me a kind of control that he'll never have, it's like he(and everyone I see hitting like that in tournaments) are always trying too hard, while for me hitting any FH shot is a lot easier, I'm just telling based on my experience.
YoSoujiro 3 years ago
Then why did you say it was not recommended?
Also, your situation is very odd because the straight-arm is much harder to control. It may be because your brother and the other people are trying to muscle the ball.
i8myshirt 3 years ago
I don't think it's odd, my coach says that straight arm technique opens greatly your improvisation abilities and gives you a more versatile, fluent and a LOT easier shot making(though i didn't need him to tell me, I 've experience those things in my own game, and you can see what I'm talking about if you watch Roger and Rafa play and see their amazing fluency when hitting). I should've said "straight arm is more recommended than bend arm if you want to play effortlessly". It's that ok for you?
YoSoujiro 3 years ago
They're pros though. Most pro's shots are "fluent" as you say. Also, Nadal seems like he muscles the ball everytime with his forehand, instead of making it seem effortlessly. I don't know what you mean by more versatile. You mean like hitting topspin to hitting flat and stuff? I don't think it matters for that. They're just different. There is no better recommended one for a general sense.
i8myshirt 3 years ago
ok ok whatever dude you win
YoSoujiro 3 years ago
He is very talented, but he is an asshole at the same time so I don't have any respect.
bigpo1234 3 years ago
His forehand is horribly inefficient, he gets owned when a player decides to attack it and can move the ball around enough. Just watch him play live, he loses SO much energy when changing direction with the forehand.
dmugger 3 years ago
you are crazy his forehand is efficient and nice to see!!!!howeather he isn't lose energy when changing direction because he is very explosive and reactive !!!
dade9966 3 years ago
He's in the top 5 in the world and plays primarily a baseline game. So how exactly do you statistically say his forehand is inefficient? Do you have any backing on your statement or is that or just an opinion? Who owned him?
Now if you're referring to physics you may note he is rotating his shoulders and hips through the shot and using his arm as a whip. So where is the energy lost?
tennismike22 3 years ago
It's correct, just by bending your elbow you're alredy losing energy, the MOST efficient way of hitting is with the arm fully stretched, whichs allows the wrist to flow freely an therefore you can generate A LOT more acceleration using the least energy/impulse. Federer and Nadal are the EXACT picture of what I mean, you can see how easy is for them to generate spin and power almost effortlessly, and thats the direct consecuence of their "full strech arm" techinique.
