wtf this isnt what happened, anthony killed himself because he thought cleopatra had done the same, but she didnt, but when she found out that anthony was dead she killed herself.
@TheGameLover666 Erhh no. Thats the movie version to tear-jerk the audience. Try to actually research history before making such an absolutist thing like that. What hapenned here is much closer to what happened. In this version Augustus is actually much more civil to her than he was in real life. She had to convince him to let her go pay her respects to Anthony before being imprisoned. She took that oportunity to kill herself. The rest is pretty acurate.
I think the idea was to angle the blade upwards, hopefully knackering not only the diaphragm but a lot of the lungs, and maybe the heart too. Thats how id go about it anyway...
If anyone thinks getting skewered in the diaphragm would result in a death as painless as they showed here your nuts. Your diaphragm is the muscle that controls your lungs and you would slowly and painfully suffocate. It would be like getting the wind kicked out of you but 10x worse and you'd never re-catch your breath.
it looked like anthony was doing the jitterbug , while vorenus was doing the charleston. talk about octavians boys in the second act , they made the boy from big E , look like a couple of flappa girls who were a little loosey on the Old 'Gin And Juice.
Beautiful, truly. They captured the essence of the story.. And whilst we may never know the truth, historically .They portrayed an ending worthy of the legend. that is the birth of the Roman empire.
I really love this scene in these beatiful series. They really did show both the errors and the majesty of the Roman Empire. The Romans may have been brutal but we owe them so much.
I f there is an afterlife I would love to have a chat with Mark Anthony.
i was plauged with indecision as to how to name my second born son, the first of course being after myself. Alex. But his performance was soooooo brilliant that it left no doubt in my mind what the second would be called, Anthony....
The reaction of marc Anthony to Cleopatras death is so painful that you manage to feel sorry for essentially a very unsympathetic character. Brilliant series
Anyway, he wasn't just a grunt. You do not become Consul and leader of half the known world by being a grunt. He was rather shortsighted thoughto not realise how bad his falling in love with an Eygptian and promising her the right to rule would look to the Romans. He gave Octavian ammunition to use against him.
Its a shame you cut the scene so early. The ritual re-patria of his corpse is a very telling and important scene. Vorenus makes him in death what he wasn't in life. Also you cut Vorenus' reaction to Cleopatra entering the room .. alive! Bad editing my friend. :(
if it had been a ground battle- antony woulda won cuase he had more experience in that matter. actium was a sea battle, where his own roman ground troops were not experienced to be sailors alongside cleopatras ships.
Octavian refitted his roman ships to be quickler than the heavy egpytian ships, and his men been training for a sea battle. So yeah- antony woulda whooped octavians ass in a ground battle.
Hirtius and Pansa commanded the state forces. They did not command Octavian's legions, who did play a significant part in the battle. At any rate, Hirtius and Pansa were not even soldiers, so it does not speak very highly of Antony that they managed to beat him.
A good death for a great man.

How things have changed. Nowadays it would have been like: Oh, no, don't kill yourself! Back then was: Need a Roman sword? Sure. Use mine! O.o

The Bard did it ten times better. And Antony should be in his 50s. Or is it just me being used to "aging lion" type actors?

Females attempt suicide more than males but males are more successful at it. Of course Anthony was misled but he's 1 to Cleo's 2 this episode.

He was a vulgar brute. Not a grunt. He was actually quite clever, but he acted in passion and on a whim far too often than he did in intellect.
