i have a terrible fear of escalators i refuse to use one i start having panic attacks it has caused problem and is embarrisng to my family wish i could get over it i avoid malls and airports
last year at a wal mart in my area i witnessed a 90 year old woman fall backwards halfway up the up escalator, so she was sliding down scraping her sides and legs and the escalator kept taking her up, it was pretty brutal. someone finally stopped it and helped her, i didnt really know what was happening til it was too late , and yes i did go to help her too, i didnt just sit there
I AM SCARED OF ESCALATORS SO MUCH. i cant go down or up without my heart jumping and having to hold someone. .... it soudns lame but i was in new york city and i fell down one. i will never forget that. i am scared to death. and on top of that, im scared of heights. lucky me.
Im terrified of Heights and just last week I made an ass of myself in front of everyone at the mall when my 15 yr old son was trying to pull me over to get on the escalator. THIS SUCKS!
@jerzeytpke I am sorry to hear that. If anyone looked down on you for having a phobia when in all likelihood just about everyone has some kind of phobia, then shame on them. Also, I think it was wrong of your son to try to force you to ride an escalator knowing you had a fear of them. He should have just let you take the stairs or an elevator. Taking the stairs is better for one's health anyway. Why was he so insistent on you getting on that thing? God bless.
@WebAnt Thats the bad part he DID tell me to take the stairs next to the elevator but mt phobia of HEIGHTS (such as an open mall) prevents me from doing so so I have to use an elevator. I know it sounds crazy to people that havent experienced this. He was insistant because we were buying sneakers for him and of course the store was UPstairs ALL GLASS FLOOR and WALLS, THANK YOU so much I now know I am not alone. God Bless you.
@WebAnt Oh what a mess. He DID tell me to take the stairs BUT my TERROR of HEIGHTS? I Couldnt do it. I could take the elevator BUT the MALL is GLASS WALLS ANDFLOORS. We were buying HIM SHOES and the store HAD to be UPSTAIRS THREE FLIGHTS! Thanks you so much for UNDERSTANDING AND GOD BLESS YOU know you are not alone
@WebAnt@WebAnt Well he DID tell me to use the STAIRS BUT IM TERRIFIED of HEIGHTS since my boyfriend when I was young dangled me from a 5th story balcony. My SON NEEDED SHOES now I coulda used the elevator BUT its STILL 3 flights UP Glass walls OPEN SPACE ,,,,,,,,,,,,Thank you for understanding.........And God Bless you too
Im deathly afraid of Escalators, I can go up them but not down them. Because Im deathly afraid of heights and last time I went down one I was in elementary school, and when i went to step on to go down i did a split and my head was hanging down. & Then when I went down one I almost fell over the edge of it, and my mom was screaming at me.): now she just pushes me on and I literally am terrifed.
@TheSitemodelsx It is the going down escalators that bothers me but not to the point that I cannot do it. Did a split, huh? Rough. If I ever did one of those I would be in the hospital. Heh. Sorry to hear you have such a problem with them. I pray it gets better for you. Great mom, huh? :-P Have a blessed one.
@theshamanofsexy1979 I think I will always be at least a little nervous concerning them because I do have a fear of heights or more accurately a fear of falling but I do not have enough fear to not ride escalators up and down. What I refuse to do is stand at the edge of any abyss of any kind without a guard rail or something to keep me from falling in case I lose my balance or something. You won't ever see me standing at the edge of an unguardrailed cliff. That is for sure.Take care.
I've fine when the escalator is descending but I get nervous enough that I don't like moving when its ascending. I almost fell from a ascending escalator during a field trip in elementary school. I swear it was an extra large escalator. I actually fell on the steps with my entire on them while my classmates were shouting and I think they helped pull me up. I don't remember after that. When its descending I'm completely fine. I have no problems with stairs and elevators, up or down.
@MaySmith09 Aw,sorry to hear that. Well, the good thing is that in the absence of elevators you will have to take stairs which is more healthy for you anyway. However,I still hope that one day you overcome your fear because there may come a time when you really need to take an escalator. God bless.
i've always had this phobia but abt 3 weeks ago , i SWEAR after 15 minutes of crying and screaming when i got on i SWEAR i almost fell , and i screamed so loud everyone in the mall looked
Wow,that must have been embarrassing. Sorry to hear that. Do you think getting on with someone bigger and stronger behind (when going up)or in front (when going down) of you that could make sure you could not fall would help?
Your mother was not being evil. She was just trying to make sure you do not go your whole life afraid of escalators and the only way for that to happen is to make you keep riding them until the fear is gone. If she let you avoid them your fear would just grow and grow and you would never be able to ride them. She is trying to nip this thing in the bud so you do not go through life avoiding things you fear. She is trying to teach you to be brave. At least, that is what I think she is doing.
i am terrified of them im 13 nearly 14 and i can go up one but when i have to go down one i refuse immediantly because im scared of heights and i think i'd fall and i get all nervous and scared and start to cry it has ruined my life :(
I can honestly tell you that the only way that a phobia can ruin your life is if you do not face and overcome it by doing whatever it is you fear doing repeatedly until the fear is gone. The only way you can live a courageous life unhindered by fear is to tackle phobias head on. If you do that, you will never have regrets about things you should have done but were too afraid to. I know this from experience. God bless.
I do not blame you. That is beyond gross. It is trifling. To be into that you would have to let yourself be reduced to an animal. Something along the lines of a pig rolling around in its own filth and/or the filth of other pigs. Pathetic. Sad. Disgusting.
I'm affraid to go in a elevator, escalators I don't have a problem with...but when I was a little kid I got stuck in an elevator and since then I never went on one again!! I rather walk a thousand stairs...lol!
I got stuck in a freight elevator on my last job and had to get people out of a passenger elevator that got stuck. The elevators on that job had issues. It has not helped my uneasiness with riding elevators but I am not uncomfortable enough to avoid them. I just always wonder if they are going to get stuck or something whenever I get on them. Take care.
I recently went with some church members to visit my church member's sister who had just had a heart transplant. I rode up the escalator just fine. But,when it came to riding it back down I was pretty nervous. Another member opted to take the elevator so I was able to jump on with her without arousing any suspicion. Thank God for that sister. Heh. :-)
i have a crippling fear of escalators i was at the mall once and had a full on melt down due to an escalator my sister had to take me home once i went down the stairs i just couldn't get it together
Sorry to hear about that. Have you ever seen a doctor about this? You are not crazy but since your fear is interfering with your life or creating significant problems for you it might be wise to see a professional. They should be able to help. Take care and God bless.
I'm afraid of elevators, but less of ecalators, although I didn't want to go down the first time and the only time I was supose to,but I did go up. It's best to not try to be like other people that aren't afraid. But I think the reason I didn't go down was because I guess I am afraid of heights a little. For me this is just anther exemple of acrophobia.
my heart literally races right when i'm about to get on the escalator or off it.. it's weird, i havent had the fear until just recently out of nowhere. However.. I've found that I'm usually really nervous whenever I have to carry a piece of luggage (like the kind on wheels) that are really heavy and have to be on the step below the one i'm standing on. sooo nervewracking! I've almost fallen with the luggage too. :-( too scary for me.
im terrified of them. when i was about 4, i was with my family, and i started going up the escalator on mi own and tripped- being only 5 i couldn't get myself back up. i was getting closer to the top and i would of torn my fingers to pieces but, a guy that i didnt know sprinted up it just in time and caught me just before i reached the top. now everytime i see a escalator, i have flashbacks. riding up escalators is easier then going down, but i refuse to do both if theres stairs or a lift
I feel you and am so sorry that happened to you. The bad things that happen to us growing up can affect our entire lives if we let them. I know I am still dealing with the consequences of some of my childhood traumas but the older I get the more I realize I have the power to get over them and must overcome them. At some point we need to realize that what happened to us in our childhood needs to be left in our childhood so we can live our lives to the fullest and be happy. Feel me? God bless.
I feel you. I rode the elevator a lot on my former job and I ride it a lot on my current job as well. On the former job it was a little creepy because the elevator got stuck between floors once. That scarded the living daylights out of one of my former coworkers and she dialed 911 on her cell. Now,on my current job, there is an elevator that is constantly malfunctioning or not working at all. It is old and needs to be replaced,I think. That is creeping me out a bit but I am cool. Take care.
I have gotten trapped on an elevator since then but was quickly freed. I am a little leery of the elevators on my job but not everywhere. Nevertheless,I continue to have the courage to use those elevators. I have no choice. Using them is the only way I can do my job. As far as escalators go,I doubt if I will ever be completely comfortable riding them down and that will make me careful when getting on them. That is not such a bad thing,I think.
Sorry to hear that. Yeah, just thinking about riding down an escalator right now is making me feel a little tense. However,I do think I could do it. I hope you are able to conquer your fear because conquering or triumphing over a phobia or fear is one of the best things in life. Of that I am certain. Take care and God bless.
I also have experienced escalator phobia, I just couldn't go on the damn thing! For fear of some sort, but I feel you man. I think you have to use the exposure model in cognitive behavioral therapy to assess the situation. By this I mean, by repeatedley and purposefully exposing yourself over and over to escalators until you feel no more anxiety. Look up gradual exposure therapy, I have tried it but it is still a challenge, God bless
I feel you. If I rode down escalators more often it would definitely help me to get over my anxiety concerning doing that. That is for certain. Thanks for commenting.
Good point. You know,I do not like to call people names but with fruitcakes pushing the boundaries of normal every single day and sometimes winning who knows what normal is anymore. Ha.:-)
