MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive Pedal

I have had this pedal for over a year now....I don't really like how it sounds with my gear specifically. It is a good pedal if you just use it on a clean channel BUT when it has a distortion and then you use the pedal it kind of makes the sound muddy (for me at least). But I recommend people try it and make their own opinion of it.

Remember when buying this pedal, he's running this through a tube amp not a solid state amp. so the pedal will sound better, and pinch harmonics will be alot easier, sound better as well.. i only own 1 solid state amp it's a marshall valvestate amp which has a tube preamp in it. i'm not even sure this pedal would sound as good going through it, but i also own a carvin v3 which has all the over drive i need at low volumes ti's a great amp high recommended.

i just got this pedal, and im trying to find a good sound. i have a peavy vypyr, with all the settings on clean. then i have a behringer UM300 distortion pedal, then goes through the MXR pedal, on the zakk wylde settings. i CANT get a good sound at all like these demo videos have. i have a epiphone les paul limited edition custom, and it seems like theres just so much distortion and feedback you cant hear what you're playing. do you guys suggest anything? thanks!

I have used this pedal to push my amp, it gets good saturation, but its a shitload of hiss, and you HAVE to keep your fingers moving otherwise she'll howl like a motherf*cker. honestly , try a BOSS OD-1/OD-3 I had much better luck and better tone .

@metalpride15 well dude u gotta remember the metal zone is a distortion pedal this is an overdrive the difference is that overdrive is meant to be engaged over ur amps distortion that way if u have a really nice amp like a marshall tube or somethin u keep the amps great tonal charecteristics just with boosted signal and sustain a distortion overloads ur signal if engaged on the distortion channel

dont get dis pedal it sux i bought it and played it 4 an hour and realized it was a mistake it has horrible distortion and it doesnt sound like zakk wylde. he doesnt even use it he uses a boss ds-1 distortion pedal. they just paid him to put his name on it so dey cld make a quike buck off of a cheap poor quality pedal. trust me dont waist $100 on dis its not worth it.

probably will, but to get a heavier tone you would need a guitar with humbckers (i presume your strat is with single-coils)

If its an HSH than he/she has humbuckers. H stands for humbucker and S stands for singlecoil. So he/she has a humbucker in the neck position, a single coil in the middle position, and a humbucker in the bridge position. Just tryin to help you understand

well you could use it with the line 6 spider 3, but you won't be able to use much distortion because of all the built in presets and effects in the line 6. I have a line 6 spider jam and every distortion pedal i use through the spider jam gives me this weird feedback tone if you use a good amount of distortion so if i were you i would just get the footswitch to switch between presets but thats just my opinion.

Well one thing you could do is play with distortion already set on he amp and use the ZW overdrive as a sort of top boost to give you more of a distortion for your solos. If you are trying to get a pedal to switch from clean to distortion than maybe you should consider getting one of the line 6 short boards that work with the amps.

Been thinking about getting this for ages now, can anyone tell me, (Specifically aimed at those who own one) is there really much point in me adding it to my set up as I'm already currently running my guitar through a 150-watt Line 6 Spider III which is pretty much a library of effects in it's own right.. you will be able to tweak the overdrive to exactly what you want since the pedal will have the 3 knobs to adjust to what you want. another thing is when wylde uses this pedal he uses to boost his already dirty amp. it basically pushes the amp past 10

AH! I've always been content with the Line 6 I currently own but it's been bugging me for a while as to whether or not this pedal would be worth adding to my set up. I thought that if I could dial in a tone on my amp that comes close to a tube distorted tone that this pedal could be of some use to me. That whole tone chasing thing really applies to folks with tube amps. Mind, there are high level ss amps out there like Randalls. But general rule of thumb, buy a decent tube head and the adjust to taste with pedals, if you need to. You have to understand something about OD pedals, they are meant to push tubes into overdrive sooner. With the amp being pushed your tone because more fat and saturated. SS amps work completely different.

If you are already using the OD channel, I suggest the Fulltone OCD. There are 4 versions out that I know of. Of thoes 4, the 4th version is better for pushing your signal a little more.
