In Private Eye when they covered this in 2008, they said that many companies began research into the dangers of asbestos as early as the 1930s. They knew damn well how dangerous that stuff was decades before the public did.
Smith had his speeches written for him by the asbestos industry and kept on saying the people at large were not at danger. Blood money.
Those who are still protecting Smith also know about the sex abuse allegations and keep silent on those too. Cambridge House, Knowl View, Dobroyd Castle.
What kind of sick minds defend what Cyril Smith did - and got away with? For now
The families and victims of sexual abuse and asbestos cancer will never forgive Cyril Smith
I understand peoples anger on this matter but was what Smith did any worse than say an MP campaigning for factories that make armaments to remain open,or for a tobacco factory?,these are very difficult issues. How many people die from drink in England each year?,shall we shut the breweries down?.
So first he says there isn't a danger then he says the people working there knew they were in danger what a hypocrite! I bet he's wishing he had an asbestos suit know he's in hell!
Wow did you hear him at the end, "They all chose to work there, they could have left". yes indeed I agree with Supertruth77 bury him in an asbestos coffin. Smith misled Parliament and the poor people of Rochdale who breathed in asbseston (see the movie all the dust blow when teh shets are dropped). Smith helped plant a seed that dwelled within so many and who won't see 50 never mind 80 and who now suffer Mesothelioma
What a prat. I am not sure "saving 2000 jobs" is a good excuse when perhaps a large portion of those 2000 people will die from asbestos related illness!
As well as the many more people who will die from it from being/working in/on buildings which contain it.
I used to believe Smith was a decent man until I heard his comment about safety at the asbestos plant, "...there were people that worked there that knew they were in danger of it [asbestos], but nobody made them work there; they could have left." Sounds like a Victorian mill owner! Classic British Liberal.
I don't believe the likes of Cyril Smith cover things like this up to save jobs. They do it for their own personal interests.
This type of corruption is far more common today - with large corporations not just influencing people with money but also threatening scientists if they disclose information that is contrary to corrupt business practices.
How ignorant to say 'They could have left'. The same argument is given for people in the world who are virtually slaves to these businesses

Bury him in asbestos coffin. And then force all his mourning family to breathe it in for ten minutes.

what was in it for this politician when his local people were dying?
Did the asbestos factory contribute to political funds?
Most politicians have a price. This ones seem to be very cheap but deadly

Clearly there was another agenda here - which was not about public welfare. .
