@jedihunter80 German weren't evil nazi's were the majority of people in the german army didn't know anything about concentration, they didn't even know that some of there uniform was made from the hair of dead jewish prisoners!
Great video Eddy. Oh, and I agree about the Pegasus Bridge story being turned into a film. My grandfather (Wagger Thornton) was mentioned in the book for destroying a tank with a piat gun at point blank range. Doesn't bear thinking about. I take my hat off to youself and all who fought.
The great historian Stephen Ambrose(he was the main consultant for Private Ryan and Band of Brothers) wrote a great book on Pegasus Bridge. It would make a great movie.
great video, iv got to see 1 of the rail guns, if theres 3 surviveing, where are they, iv searched and carnt fid em, would be nice if 1 of them was in normandy as im going there this summer
One complete K5 railwaygun was made from two damaged ones, and remains on display to this day at the United States Army Ordnance Museum located on the Aberdeen grounds. I don't know where the third one is though.
The landingcraft seen in the scene from Saving Private Ryan can now be seen at that museum, Le Grand Bunker. The one used in the movie was actually used in the war.
When we were at "Le Grand Bunker" in Ouisterham there was a chap in a wheelchair in the entrance hall, telling the story of what he had done 40 years ago....
he was 1 of the 2 men blowing the door of the entrance to the bunker.
Several wheeks later i heard (do not know if it's true) he died.
Thanks. Yeah I drove back alone and it took me 8 hours to get from Normandy to my home in the north of the Netherlands. Mind you I was over the speedlimits almost all the time :)
thanks for showing this because my great grandpa was stationed at one of those bunkers unforunatley he was a german but he said he killed no one because he escaped and ran far away but thanks god bless you all
Thanks for your comment. I guess your grandpa did the right thing because I don't think he would have survived had he stayed there. But I wonder how he could have run away because then his comrades would have shot him as a deserter. Anyway, good thing he survived.
I want to thank you for posting this. As many Americans, I had a grandfather and great-uncles from the other side of the family who landed there that day. All survived. Really, you did a fantastic job. It's odd how close the real structures are to what has been portrayed in movies like "The Longest Day". I recognized the Pegasus Bridge immediately as where the English commandos landed. Thank You.
You're welcome. It was a fantastic trip and sometimes it was like stepping through a timegate because it was all WW-2 vehicles and people in uniform. It was great.
Well, as you can see in the video, we put the jeep on a trailer and pulled it with the campervan to France. I think it cost about a third more in petrol and the trailer was rented but I don't know the costs involved.
The German High Command did not know that Normandy would be the exact spot. British and American intelligence had fooled them into thinking the attack would be somewhere else. Besides, I think we'd be talking russian, not german if it hadn't been for D-Day
Does anyone ever wonder why Normady wasnt as heavily defended as it should have been? They knew the attack was coming. Most of you people have no idea what WW2 was really about.
They didn't know it was going to be in Normandy though. And to build super defences all along the coastline is a gigantuan task even if you use slave labour.
Very nice video. It warms my heart to know that people still remember and are thankful for the sacrifices made by all the allied soldiers there. Brits, Americans, Canadians, French and many others. I have relatives buried at Normany.
Yup! If it`s in Ouistreham, it`s Le Grand Bunker. German headquarters, covering the river Orne and the Canal. Nice Liberator by the way...got one myself, but in civilian outfit.
Yeah it was pretty cool. We were at Vierville sur Mer at some point and it was all people in uniform. Not a civilian in sight. I thought I'd stepped through a timegate and landed back in WW-2. Soooo cool. Go if you ever get the chance.
