Before today I haven't heard this song in over 15 years when I was a child but I could still play the tune perfectly in my head. Then I clicked on this video and heard it played back to me exactly as I remember, even down to not understanding the lyrics (I don't want to, it would lose meaning). That sent forth a flood from years of pent-up emotions (This song frequently plays in my head when I'm sad) and I cried for the first time in years. Seriously, thank you for posting this.

Because, as for it, Disney changed the last of the story into happy ending. The original Andersen's story is tragic love.

This movie is a work old some years ago than Disney.

The words to call Seppuku are implication to be said to kill itself to take responsibility in old japan. the words that these words are used only by the man who is a samurai. It's not used for the woman who cannot become a samurai.

I know the the fact that Disney has made different endings for fairytales to make them happier and more palatable for modern kids, but thanks for informing that the term "seppuku" is only used in the case of samurais. In my Asian art history classes the profs don't like to talk about ritual suicide. One professor even changed the subject when asked about seppuku by a student.

Seppuku is nothing to take lightly. I can see why the teacher would change the subject. It is a dark and worrisome act that only those who was captured in a war or those who has become a great lose of honor. To commit Seppuku is considered a last resort to the oldern time Samurai It is a long and painful act. The act of it would take two people. The person committing the act and the person that is making sure the person shows no trace of pain. For to show pain would dishonor them more..

It's been a long time since I saw this anime in it's entire length in 1985 , but I do vividly remember the end being quite explicit with Marina's death. I had an aunt who didn't allow me to see it at her house as she said that one of the characters had committed "hari kari" ( seppuku). I got curious and watched the anime at home to see what the fuss my aunt made about the "hari kari" was all about, so I must not be remembering correctly of how Marina died.

However, I remember the controversy where conservatives were saying that Ariel should have been "punished" for disobeying her father. I disagree as she had already suffered the consequence of having her voice taken away and Ursula trying to take her man away.

The Disney version is a big improvement over the original story, most notably because they improved the mermaid lead and her motivations. They made Ariel facinated with the human world before meeting Eric, Ariel had no intentions of going to the sea witch to get legs so that she can be with the prince, until she was talked into it, which happened after her overprotective dad made her miserable.

I'm glad to find someone in S.America who likes this anime because I think it's a beautiful masterpiece.

I like those Disneys of your favorites. If you prefer princess stories, you'll love "Swan Lake Anime" released in Japan in 1981. "Cendrillon"(Japan, 1995-made) is also recommended. It's the Cinderella story but only in French language in youtube, but the pictures are so pretty you'll love it!
