I can somewhat see Ronnies point of view on guns, the world probably would be better off if guns had never been invented in the first place. However they do exist, and they will never go away, so i think that as long as corrupt governments and violent criminals have guns, then ordinary citizens must also be allowed to possess arms. I'm a huge Ronnie VanZant fan. I'm a big fan of Skynyrd and of Ronnie's lyrics. In the 1970's, when this was recorded, doing away with handguns may have been quite practical. I remember having been a teenager in the 70's myself that the crime rate was not nearly what it is today. These days, you better own two to protect you and yours.

The old Lynyrd Skynyrd was such a great band. I hate to see that bull shit they have going on now with Johnny. Hearing those dumb fucking songs like "Red White and Blue" makes me sick. I'm a huge Ronnie VanZant fan. I'm a big fan of Skynyrd and of Ronnie's lyrics. In the 1970's, when this was recorded, doing away with handguns may have been quite practical. I remember having been a teenager in the 70's myself that the crime rate was not nearly what it is today. These days, you better own two to protect you and yours.

Ronnie was a true Southerner. He was the international ambassador for southern rock and Southern culture. And he didn't think we should all have easy access to handguns. He talked about all the homicides that caused.
You can be from a red state, a Southerner, and even a Republican, and still have your own opinions. Ronnie was very clear about his opinion on this issue. And he was a proud Southerner. It's not complicated.

well Ronnies right. If everyone threw their guns out the world would have less deaths. But the problem is that is never going to happen. If they outlawed guns worldwide criminals would still have theirs. The only thing that would do is unarm the good guys so the bad guys are carefree to rape and pillage. For this very reason, I will never give up my guns. A tool is neither good nor bad, it depends on what the user is using it for.

I cant imagine that Ronnie was against the idea of gun ownership completely. Common sense dictates that "handguns were made for killing" if they get into the wrong hands, and thats what the song meant. You cant blame him, you know how many times that mans had a gun pulled on him? There was more than just one "Gimme three steps" incident in Ronnies life. Besides, Ronnie, Gary, and Gene Odom went squirrel hunting with 22.s all the time.

my point wasn't to outlaw every kind of gun...personally, i do believe a person has a right to have a rifle, especially with regards to hunting, and if he needs that rifle to defend himself against someone who wants to cause him harm, so be it...but i really dont think our forefathers had semi-automatic weapons and these two-bit hand guns, like a .38 special, in mind...my main point was that the new skynyrd in my mind runs contrary to what ronnie was all about---i think that's pretty obvious

He wasnt condemn hunting , he was speaking of the use of handguns that are used for violate crimes. The song was not wrote to be a political statement as many think. Ronnie was jsut saying ,basically the same thing alot of folks think. I know it wasnt a anti-gun song. Just cool lyrics about a gun, what if was was about a knife. Ronnie was talking about the saturday night special hand gun that was a low caliber cheaply made pistol that was easy to conseal and could be purchased just about anywhere.Ronnie shot himself in the leg with one of these guns which may have prompted him to write this song. and you say he is uneducated?
