Ah Carmel! Simply superb. The first time I saw Carmel on The Tube, back in 1982/3, I was enchanted. One of those breathless moments when you know you are listening to something really good and you never want it to stop. Thirty years on, and I'm still enchanted.
It is so interesting to hear Amy Winehouse, Adele, Duffy NOW, yet Carmel was a hit back in the 80s as well as Vocalists like Eddy Reader and Fairground Attraction, Working Week.....The Brits seem to do it best!!!!!
It's a shame the Americans slept on this song back in the day...too much John Cougar Mellencamp most probably or that 'Sister Christian' song....Thank God I was in the UK long enough to know this song. It was just stuck in my head when I was a child and I still love it!
First saw Carmel as support to ABC on their Lexicon Of Love tour - the three of them were given abour 2 foot of stage space and were largely ignored by everyone, but not me!
Caught up with them again in 1987 when they appeared at Ronnie Scotts in London and they were magnificent - fell in love with her that evening and have loved her every day since...
Carmel, under the great direction of British film maker legend Lindsay Anderson, this music video could well have inspired Dennis Potters shooting style for 'Lipstick On Your Collar' . Thoroughly enjoyable.
I remember seeing them on the tube and other shows. I thought they were the epitomy of cool, I was only 14 but they have influenced me ever since and i still play them. Favorite track "i'm not afraid of you"
Lots of pissed kiddies who had come to see a support band and just talked (shouted) over every body else - and an arsehole of a photographer who kept pushing everyone out of his way to get close up pics
why all the ill vibe to Duffy both women are good singers so they sound alike so what just enjoy.
are we to belive no to people can sound alike, my God every one in the arts must at one time or the other been influenced by some body.
are we to belive the late Fela kuti, the late James brown or the late Frank sinatra never copied others, For pity sake just enjoy, I love the guitar been trying to play for 10 years hope to one day sound like Wes Montgomery or George Benson, People just enjoy
Dear Friend ..... Rotten Eggs to each is own. I think Carmel is a fine singer, in fact very good. But Duffy as talent she aint no Etta James or Dusty Springfield But the Girl as some talent. Again just enjoy. we are all not good singers. But thats the wonder of Life. Happy new year Much peace. Anthony.
This was the first Carmel (single) record I bought - I did not actually know that she was "white" until I bought the LP. It was the good old time before internet...
I always thought she/they were so talented and so under rated in the States. She's a real treasure. Thanks for immortalizing these fabulous songs. They really stood out in the era they were recorded!
One of Carmel s best tracks. Its got such a great power and is a hymn to happiness.Carmel and Jim Parris on bass deserve to be awarded some kind of music prize for all they achieved in their music.Long live Carmel s spirit..
another amazing early track from Carmel - THE DRUM IS EVERYTHING is one of the best longplayers of the 80s - and one of my favorite LPs of all time! Too bad the CD is OOP for a long time, at least I have mine!
This video was directed by the great Lindsay Anderson. He said it was an intentional dig at the "Kitchen Sink" films made during the late 50's and early 60's (of which he was one of the directors -- THIS SPORTING LIFE)
A lot of current UK girl singers remind me of Carmel - not all anywhere as good. Where is she now? I saw them live once and they were terrific - where are they now?
But where is Carmel now ? I've never heard about her for many years ? What is she doing ? I can't find anything about her. Thanx for answers, if you have !
Carmel did a few concerts about a year ago in Belgium, and Netherlands according to the listing i received through a Carmelmailing. They havent got e label at the moment,so it might be difficult to release new material, such as the amazing:Tous les Fils(All the Sons)song about young men sent to war...You can see it on youtube.
I found the cassette version of The Drum Is Everything about a decade ago and I have treasured it ever since. Carmel is too good to be forgotten with her timeless tunes. I got up a did a dance during this video. Well done!
Picture it - fall 1984, me a young white boy working in black radio, and falling in love with this song and this girl - everything that has come since sends me back for more more more - long live Ms McCourt~
I was living in a crap squat while in Uni in 1984 and it was snowing outside like the vid and the dealer (seriously!) came around in the morning with that 7" having just bought it (or nicked it!)and played it and we all went 'Jesus what a song'
-I know exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard this song - beats JFK/911 etc!
OMG!!! Brought 7" last year for about 50p. Played it yesterday on new turntable but could'nt remember video so looked it up. Funny how it all comes back so clearly. I watched this loads back then. There was so much of talent comming through about that time in UK. Were some of the guys anything to do with Joe Boxer/s???

OK I admit it, I was prompted to remind myself of Carmel's back catalogue by the rise of Duffymania.
However, I'd forgotten how joyous and life affirming her music is. How good is this?
We want a Carmel revival and we want it now!
