Carlos Alvarez is simply good (though somehow "brought away" at some point by his colleague.
Licitra... I can't hold laughing. Everytime I watch this video (I watched the live actually) I have to laugh in every phrase he sang (except the first maybe).
Alvarez is wonderful and Licitra, despite a voice that verges on the ugly, has the correct sound for the role of Alvaro in terms of ring and power but he should try to get rid of the goat bleat in the middle the edge on the voice is just too much.
Licitra just stopped going to Bergonzi because it was costing him money for the lessons and he wanted to start straight away to earn the big money. Bergonzi still say's Licitra is an unfinished tenor and it shows big time. Loud is not enough.
Bergonzi can't teach anyway. Which successful singer learned off Bergonzi (going to have one lesson after full training somewhere else and picture taken for CV doesn't count)? Bergonzi has this funny "Accademia Verdiana" where you can go and sing an aria for 5 minutes and pay 100 Euros to the master. You can also do the full course for thousands of Euros for several weeks and get 2x 15minutes of expert coaching per week. That said, I really like Bergonzi's singing!
oy. I couldn't listen to the whole thing because Licitra sounds so terrible. Why is this guy working so much in such big houses? If this is the best we can do, I am very worried for the future of our art.
Alvarez is probably the best Dramatic/Verdi Baritone in Opera right now, but this Licitra is not meant for this role. He sounds a little...whimpy. I'm not knocking his voice, it just isn't suited for a role like Don Alvaro. He just seems out matched by Alvarez. Plus he came in a measure early at 8:05, but we all make mistakes.
Neither sounds particularly healthy. Alvarez looks amazing, and cuts a fantastic figure, menacing and brooding. His voice has the classic ring, but he seems tense and husky in some passages, and hard-toned. But I like him.
Licitra may be thrilling in the house with his large and dark sound, but he makes me uncomfortable with staggering demeanor, and discomfort technically and theatrically. He makes several musical miscues.
I wish he could find a way to ideally harness his instrument.

This is so bad it's upsetting. Both of them....50 years ago they wouldn't have gotten lead roles in 500 seat houses....
what happened to good voices?

The sad fact today...many of the directors opera companies hire know nothing of opera...they're from a purely theatrical or movie background.

IMO, even with the tiny mistakes this is one of the better performances that Licitra has performed. Lets give the guy some slack, he's not Caruso!

I don't why these lyric tenors are singing spinto roles.
