  • where's my hoverboard fags?

  • @danielcutler84 I don't know, you have a look at us or the Universe?

  • flying pie!!!!!!!!!! oooooooooooooooooooooou bacon flavered

  • Double levitation right across the sky ...

  • whats that smoke?

  • @PaXx I'm pretty sure that's moisture in the air affected by the pucks' low temperature.

  • @PaXx liquid nitrogen

  • So in the future we'll be able to make them big and of the tracks so we can make flying saucers

  • Its Pie!

  • Double levitation so intense...

  • awesome music

  • oh, i am thinking, the little grey ass must be as cold as ice-cream...

  • yuri collection agency....

  • Comment removed

  • lol at everyone raging at how they arent releasing videos that will cure cancer or aids.

  • Very "Team Zissou" video.

  • someday, this technology will help amuse disaster victims while they wait for rescue.

  • what the hell

  • we now know, alien technology

  • You guys from new scientists should talk more about the subject. The original video has a lot of cool information about magnetic lock and etc. There are even more things this disc can do.

  • It's gotta be Alien technology! :-)

  • This is old news by now. Was published a month ago.

  • This was so awesome, that it cured my cancer.

    Thanks Science.

  • So does this channel post videos about science.....

  • What excites me the most about this is that it looks to me like proper simple harmonic motion, without all that damping crap that ruins it.

  • Mmmmmm Pie.

  • slot car racing will have some tough competiton

  • NewScientist videos are by any margin the must unifnformative. They lack explanation of everything. But nice for people who already know what they look at.

  • Great job at making a good video (with some explanation in it) worse by stripping it from everything informative, putting silly music on it, choosing a weird title and editing it like a beginner would.

  • Oh, so THAT's why there are usually clouds in the sky when UFOs are sighted.

  • I thought a rickroll was coming at :11.

  • Its not an UFO, its an IFO

  • @kukelz It's not an IFO, it's an ILO.

  • woah. double levitation all the way. what does it mean?

  • @mooxim hahhahahaha

    awesome

  • Hoverboards. Make them happen.

  • @Neoxym word, its no too long now m8!!!

  • UFO spotted, not really, LOL

  • @Oxydox I remember someone a few years back saying it was impossible for anything to go faster than the speed of light... I somehow knew this would not hold true... We'll (someone will) find a way to use the Earths magnetic fields - mark my words =)

  • @jxaxmxixn Quantum entanglement may seem 'instantaneous' and violate special relativity but that is simply due to a lack of understanding of what is really going on. I'm eagerly awaiting the confirmation results from the OPERA tests recently run showing neutrinos that appeared to travel faster than light, but I wouldn't bet on anything breaking the speed of light, its a fairly well established concept. As for Earths magnetic fields - like Oxydox said, they are far too weak to be of any real use.

  • @sutasman We still (to my knowledge) do not have a grasp on gravity and some other concepts... I'm sure the grasps are closely within the reaches of the great scientists at Cern and around the world. History has proved that every time we think we have the answer new factors emerge... Just as the world of the very big differs from the world of the very small - I'm sure we're going to find other exceptions as well. (at least I hope we will =)

  • @jxaxmxixn

We dont really know what gives particles their mass. But since Einstein, our understanding of gravity appears to be totally complete in all other regards. Mass causes the 4-dimensional structure of spacetime to change, and gravity is caused by the 4d-structure of spacetime. We can describe these gravitational fields, the 4d-structure of spacetime and how it can change, including the resulting gravitational force for any point in the structure with mathematical precision.

  • So this is like the formations of blobs of light that regurarly fly around the ISS?

  • I used to play with my double flying saucers all the way too, then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • @Kmykzy I don't get that joke.

  • @mrteemumilto when in doubt google

  • I'm sure the conspiracy nuts will say "SEE UFO technology exists!" Except for the fact that replicating this on a large scale would be so outrageously expensive & clunky that it wouldn't work (yet).

  • @madjimms Just like talking to someone who is in another country would be impossible in real time! Or at least people like you thought so not-too-long ago.

  • @Gmoooba People also thought we would have flying cars & jetpacks... We have the ability to make them yes, but its not PRACTICAL because the expense is too great & the technology isn't mature enough. "People like you" You obviously don't know me.

  • @madjimms there exist something call the coletive intelligence, and we don't have flying cars and jet packs because we really don't want it. Just like that if we as a society really want it and desire we would have it. Art and science its connected, like everything in the universe.

  • @tenisplayer Well, if more countries were socialist then more money would go into science & medicine so we could go further.

  • Why are all the New Scientist videos so inconsistent?

  • Hurry up and make flying saucers already.

  • Slowpoke meme..

  • Shouldn't this concept also work in the Earths magnetic field with bigger superconductors?

  • @jxaxmxixn Yep, although unfortunately it'd likely have to be a bit bigger than is practical

  • @xero993 ...um, that's what she said??? XD lol

  • @jxaxmxixn

Doesnt seem possible. This only works if the magnetic field lines are bent, if the field is too uniform the superconductor will only maintain its direction, but fall down. To a small superconductor earths field will look uniform. Theoretically it could work with a superconductor that is dozens of miles long, if earths magnetic field wouldnt be too weak to lift it - which unfortunately it is.

  • @kurtilein3 I notice the Earths field is roughly 200 times weaker than a refrigerator magnet - maybe the key will be discovered in our gaining knowledge of gravity???... or maybe i'm too much of a dreamer and not enough of a thinker??... ;-) - I see more studying in my future that's for sure...

  • @jxaxmxixn

Special and General relativity are notoriously difficult to understand, but fortunately thats not true anymore. Great articles, lectures and videos explaining it make it so much easier to understand, even if you are not good at mathematics. So just go for it, make it a goal to get a complete and intuitive understanding of general relativity. You will succeed in that. The same is true for cosmology and parts of astrophysics. Never stop learning.

  • maybe i couldn't understand what was going on but I liked it....

  • fuck this fuckin waste of fuckin research. research fuckin zero point energy : TESLA, STUBBLEFIELD, & T. TOWNSEND BROWN fuckin pussies.

  • Flying pancakes with 8-bit music!! Kinda reminds me of micro machines.

    Hell yeah!

  • heh, the subtitle made this look like an ad for a new desk toy.

  • You would think they would invest in a manual focus camera to record this.

  • Ybco?

  • I have the sudden urge to nuke a pot pie now.

  • God did that. ( :-| )

  • Shitt the beat at the start made me feel that i was gonna b rickrolld again.....

  • @Rayukane i was just about to comment that haha

  • PHYSICS!!! look what you did

  • Well... Now if we can make it generate a magnetic field below itself allowing it to go up and down controllably, this will be awesome!

  • saw this with a miniature train thingy

  • Lol I thought I was going to get Rick Rolled!

  • Lightest pie I've ever had.

  • i feared another rick roll

  • the disk is not a superconductor.

  • @sp4zzpp2 when anything is super chilled it becomes a super conductor, well not everything but most things.

  • Now why dont you stick a couple of those on a skateboard and then we can be hovering around.

  • Very nice...this are the videos we want...but this prototype is about 2 months old already :(

  • you can see the fishing line at 00:36!

  • fake

  • When the mothership's away, the little saucers will play.

  • I used to levitate but then I took an arrow to the knee

  • @RarewareLover Skyrim fan, eh? :D

  • ok that looks way too fun to be science!

  • at 0:09 i thought to be rick rolled lol

  • its called Quantum freezing or something like that

  • Yeah...they're OK. But could they DESTROY THE EARTH?!?!?!

  • Now I want pie...

  • Probably how UFOs fly.

  • who puts music into this !!!

  • yay sound!!!

  • Hot Pockets

  • That looks like about 100-year-old technology compared to what the military has right now in their D.U.M.B.s (Deep Underground Military Bases), all tax-payer funded of course.

  • @roell29 rofl

  • holy crap! the music makes my face bleed

  • I would love to see the solar system like this.

  • Ehh this really isn't news to many nerds, but then again I haven't seen double-superconductor-lev done quite as well before and let's face it superconductors flying are still absolutely amazing to see, what with none to be found in our natural world ^.^

I'm sure just as how magnetism isn't nearly as exciting to modern society as it would have been a century or two back, this will eventually lose it's "cool" (pun not intended but I'm sure we all see it...), but until then: like++.

  • @Truthiness231 Oh and before a fellow nerd jumps me for making it seem like magnets and the force going here aren't the same: yeah it's the same force, but let's face it these are unique circumstances that distinguish it from regular magnetism.

  • the drum beat at 0:11 scared me...

  • @datguitarguy thought i was gonna get rick rolled

  • I want one of these!

  • @zkjgrty All you need are sapphire crystal wafers coated with a micron-thick superconductor and gold plating around that for protection of the superconductor, and then a good source of nitrogen (the liquid stuff; the gaseous form of nitrogen - 80ish% of the air we're breathing - is useless) and you'll be all set!

  • Finally a video that is not lame!

  • Double levitation all the way around the table!

  • Frozen Pie delivery, finally science does something useful.

  • lol first time?

double levitation? this is done long time ago

    newscientist is oldscientist

  • Them slowmos!!

  • this is impossible move along people

and that fukind kid below me still uses fukcing aol cause of the fukcing nose emote wat a fag

  • could be used to entertain disaster victims

  • @payasoinfeliz brilliant

  • Instant Superconductor: Just Add Liquid Nitrogen

  • neat

  • How can these be upscaled? Any ideas?

  • Flying/floating cars aren't too far away now! Just make sure to get the deluxe seat warmer package. :P

  • I love these things, hopefully they can be upscaled ^_^

  • @emikochan13 And have rockets attached to them!
