learning a second language takes time and its useless why not use this time to teach things which are more important like maths physics biology computing because the most spoke language in the world is english so why waste the time of the students by forcing them to learn a useless second language that is worth less than junk, example afrikaans and isizulu taught in schools in south africa KZN, if there is a need to learn a second language for job purposes schools offer limited selections
hey guys..wat kind of jobs can u get if u kow like 3 foreign languages? can u a decent jobs with only language skills? i mean..learning languages is hard as hell and lots of foreign languages experts dont get paid alot. :(
Well, i know what i'm doing...learning as many languages as i can, especially European languages, i always dreamed of moving to Italy with il mio amore but i never thought that learning a foreign language would help increase grey matter! Gratzi for the information
Americans of European descent never studied foreign languages because of the Atlantic crossing and then the western movement across the praries and across the Rocky Mountains and deserts. It was very diffictult to go back. So we just stuck with English. Most Americans will NEVER make a trip to Europe. Maybe a few in college or when you retire. I have never even traveled much in the USA. I'll do that first.
“Teaching foreign languages to kids is crucial. With funding for language programs being cut, children are getting left behind. Help spread the word about Lango a foreign language program for kids. Schools can work with Lango to develop their language programs. Students can continue to learn Spanish, French, or Mandarin with Lango classes and camps.
I remember my junior high wouldn't let us sign up for a foreign language for our freshmen year of high school. They said it would be "too difficult" to learn a foreign language while adapting to a new environment. Thank God I went to private school!
I will major in Russian Language in the near future.I've already been studying the language for about six years now.Absolutely, love the language. I am also studying American Sign Language, but I am taking a break from Spanish after five years of study.
I really wish the American education system offered more in terms of Slavic Language study. :/
Where i live it is mandatory to take french from grade 4-10. The high school i am in now offers french in every grade, german in 2 grades, italian in 2 grades, and french in 4 grades.
They better not make French mandatory in the UK because I didn't drop French because it was hard. I dropped French because I am sick of everyone saying "Look,it's sooo exotic".
@vanarkia im confused.you're going to learn dutch to pick up german girls?'k denk helaas niet dat er zo veel duitse meisjes zijn te bevinden dat nederlands kunt spreken.lol
I know its pretty pathetic. I only speak 2 languages and I'm working on my third and I still feel inadequate!!! We've got a lot of work to do in the States on this.
Just 24,000? You got to be kidding me! I'm Lebanese, I speak English, Arabic, and I'm getting much better at French (I was made to learn it as early as Kindergarten, but I never quite learned it then, so I'm learning it now). After I'm done with French, I'll be learning Mandarian Chinese.
I think it's not good that americans and also british people don't learn any foreign languages. The British people are the ones with the worst knowledge in foreign languages in the EU. I'm glad that in germany and most of the other EUcountries people learn one, two ore more languages. That should be possible in the US, too.
thumbs up my other comment if you agree with it.

The Global Elite speak English anyways.
English is the global lingua franca, and thats fine.
Unfortunately, however, this doesn't mean that native English speakers will have access to the cultural diversity that globalization has to offer.
They will because of their linguistic impediment be restricted to the economic and technological spheres only.
While the rest of the world will have access to all three.
The only question is: is cultural diversity as advantage?

@BWayIsDark2Nite Uh, I think improving the quality of the math and science education is much more urgent.
Otherwise, the US will continue to rely on immigrants very heavily.
We can't say foreigners "steal" our jobs when we are not even able to do the jobs ourselves.

There is a lot to be done as regards language learning policies in Primary Schools.
I totally agree on "the younger, the better".
