This song is so beautiful and deep. I love Joni, and I am young. Just shows how good music passes on through the years and never dies. It's hard to deny that talent has been missing in the music industry lately, but seems as if it's starting to make a comeback.
Merry Christmas Joni...thanks for the music.....i can teach my children about the joy and the power of music because of people like yourself...Love ...Stevie X
Joni is the greatest singer/songwriter of the 20th century. It has often been said that Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen are sorta like male versions of Joni Mitchell. But they don't have her emotion. I had the good fortune to see her perform at Merriweather Post Pavilion backed up by Jaco Pastorius. It was the best concert I have ever seen. And I have seen them all...Beatles, Morrison, Hendrix, Who, Beck, Clapton, Dylan, The Mothers, CS&N...Joni tops them all!
This is the only stream of Youtube comments I've ever seen in which everyone is open, everyone is accepting. It is amazing to see the power that music has to connect us all.
i felt in love with this song in the eighties with thirtysomething, a tv show that only appeared in the german late tv...tried to see every single show...miss hope michael elliot a lot those days...and nkow
I bought "Blue" when I was 19, in 1971, already a committed Joni fan. Now it's 40 years on, I'm recovering from cancer and as one would expect, re-evaluating the last 59 years and I can't put into words the pleasure her music has given to me, and enriched my life and my attitudes. I had the pleasure to see her perform once, at the NEC in Birmingham, England on Thursday 14th April 1983, front row seats. It's stayed with me for the rest of my life. My love and respect to Joni and all her admirers.
my dear brother alex brought the blue album for me many years ago sadly he died from aids i always think of him and miss him still "RIVER"is a song we both loved thank you joni x
i wish i had a river i could skate away on......... spose we have to think of the sadness and devastation we would leave behind. my daughter would have been 30 today if she had not have been killed when she was 12 still so sad miss her so much. nearly killed myself that day but had other kids to think about
One of my all time favorites. A few years ago I was going through a rough time, I had a serious drinking problem and I finally broke down and got help. On the way to treatment (December 7th 2004) this song came on in the car and my mom and I just cried and cried. I felt the lyrics with every fiber of my being. Now I'm married with a beautiful little boy and my life is in a completely different place. But this song will forever be a piece of me and a reminder that I can get through anything. <3
My Mum Passed away before Christmas 6 yrs ago and I was her youngest. The baby. She made me cry and made me say goodbye. I wish I could skate away. It still makes me sad. But I love the song.
I bought Blue when it 1st came out. River was my favorite song. The song would paint a picture of me skating on a river forever. In 1979 I bought a pair of speedskates and taught myself how to skate. I lived in Washington, D.C. & worked @ Georgetown University & in the winter I would walk down the Exorcist Steps, Cross M Street, put on my skates and skate on the C & O canal during my lunch . All I could hear was my heart beat and the slapping of the skates on the ice. Thanx for posting.
@Wernerdoesburg...I hear you sweetie..I lost my mom at 15 and this song brings her right back to me..as you grow, you will see this as a blessing. Don't ever lose faith..you are in my prayers.
@blklightning330 Is this a little boy posting this comment? The singer is Joni Mitchell. If your mommy allows it, Google the name and you may learn something.
@tommytblues like your comment ,but i think the christmas tme is there to get people to hear the real song that comes after the intro ..... would love to hear what you think ....... this is such a great song .
Makes me cry every time I hear it. I'm 15 years old now and my dad died 5 months ago, this has been played at his funeral. I can't explain how much I miss him, I would give up everything get him back. Music has a different meaning for everyone, this is mine.
@WernerDoesburg My heart goes out to you. Never is good time to lose those we love. It is final, it leaves holes in our heart and feels very heavy. I have had much loss including my dear husband too soon. I am much older than you and though the holes never completely fill, I can tell you it feels lighter. And the memories, the memories are what sustains and puts smiles on my face. Hang in there. Somehow your Father is with you. Love never dies, he will always be with you.
@WernerDoesburg Hi. I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I would imagine that this song was played at his funeral because it might have had special meaning. I know you'd give anything to have him back, but now it is up to you to carry on and make your father proud. Always keep the memory of him with love and remember only the best of him. God bless you. -Michelle-
this is so beautiful i want to cry. lea michele is covering this and i can't wait to hear her interpretation of it, she has a stunning voice. no way it'll top ms mitchell though.
I used to work in a coffee house where Joni sang. She was Joni Anderson then. She would be there for a week and then Patrick Sky would play as she played Montreal or Hamilton, Also Joe Medelson would play but I loved it when Joni came back. She covered folk songs, maybe before she wrote and played her own in her wonderful voice. This was 1964/65 and in Yorkville in Toronto. She has always so amazing and still is wonderful.
I absolutely adore this song on so many levels! She made these precious and profound songs the best before anyone else! Later, musicians like Dan Fogelberg and Jackson Browne would pick up her mantle as they matured in their music! I love you, Joni! BobbyK
Please for the love of god go watch this!!! This is hand down period do t the end BEST cover i have ever heard in my life. Theo Katzman does a cover of River and it is the most beautiful thing I 've ever heard. It made me look up the original. When I was in an abusive marriage and depressed, I would put on my Blue album and play it loud. And I'd dream of teaching my feet to fly. That was a very long time ago. Eventually I found my river to skate on but this song still makes me sob. I don't love artists or musician but I love Joni for giving me voice.
This song is a deep, profound, awesome song that Joni did so many of in those precious, early masterpieces of the late 60's and early 70's--and everything after those years, too! Sincerely, BobbyK :+)
beautiful song, it has haunted me for so long, so many tears... for me it's about needing to escape but looking back maybe I should have stayed & fought harder.... still love you Robert Frazer wherever you are
This song brings back to me when i lost my first love and I never really got over him- it is lovely now because after 25 years we speak weekly on the phone- he is an ocean away but still close. This song is so evocative of the feeling I have always had of wanting to skate away out of this life. It is magical and sad. Thanks for posting.
I absolutely adore early Joni Mitchell! I heard this song last thursday on The Wonder Years "Christmas" episode--early season 2- and I felt like listening to alot of great Joni Mitchell songs! Love, BobbyK
@bobby7771117 I also first heard this years ago on the Wonder Years and fell in love with it.. Had never heard of Joni but this song is one of the greatest written. It slows things down and gives me hope things will be OK...
Well it don't snow here, it stays pretty green ..... I moved to Florida with my family at 15. I grew up in west Georgia in the mountains. Man I miss the snow and the Toccoa river. I'd give almost anything to go back home. Thank Joni ^_^
Dere vet at kjærligheten at så sterk at den kan ikke kan skjule seg så mye lengre. Kjærlighet er noe å feire og slettes ikke bare la det gli stille forbi. Å glem nå ikke å inviter noen, det vil bli skandaløst.Natta
Many meanings to many people, absolutely beautiful. We all feel this way sometimes lovely lyrically, and vocally...well done Sherry...Thank Laura for the share*+*+*+*
she's a brilliant artist who feels so much it sometimes comes across melancholy. Not to me. There is much to be aware of, even afraid of in our world. She has the courage to reflect this in her music. Joni has been one of my hero's for over 40 years. Her songs along w/ Patti Griffins kept me going during a difficult year where I couldn't play music (always my refuge) as I once had while recovering from illness. But along w/ the grace of loving, supportive family & friends I've made my way home.
This song is brilliant, as many of her songs are. The nuances of Jingle Bells and leading you into the belief that it's a Christmas song....when it's not. Beautiful, powerful, and sad all at once.
An aside...My grandfather grew up in Canada and he use to tell a story. He said he was in the woods one winter and saw a huge wolf. He had been skating and skated as fast as he could down the river away from the wolf. I miss you Pappy...
i love this song so much. my mother used to listen to it when i was little. i am sure joni accompanied her through lifes many ups and downs. it makes the song that much more beautiful to me.
There's no way for me to explain what this piece means to me... It was my adopted boxing name. I fought fourteen televised bouts, and they discussed how I got the nickname and Joni in more than half of them... I wrote her and even sent her a video of me fighting and the commentators explaining the origin of my nickname... but never received a response. Still, Love You JM!!!!!!
i listen to joni mitchell's blue almost everyday......

He tried hard to help me
You know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty
Made me weak in the knees
I'm so hard to handle
I'm selfish and I'm sad
Now Ive gone and lost the best baby
That I ever had
I made my baby say goodbye
There is nothing more to say. I'm sorry that I never saw how good you were to me and that I never appreciated you enough...

Perfectly captures how the holidays can strangely be some of the loneliest times of the year. Always makes tears come to my eyes.

she's a brilliant artist who feels so much it sometimes comes across melancholy.
