Im american, but I do know that I have family back in ireland, we could be related. Im a Wright and my causin traced some of our family back to northern ireland, small world hey?
@GEO900RGE yeah we would be doing alot of heavey work way ours , buckrakeing around 1000 acers a year , you sound like a big fleet , what tractors do yous have?
@newhollandthebest Its indoor's because - It's Northern Ireland, it rains ALOT! So much so we often lift grass in the rain. - Silo doesn't have to be any where near as well sealed to keep the silage good.
- We stored stuff in the silo's like straw/fertilizer/machinery and even calves!
In what possible way? we seal our silos with straw, no stupid tires. We use it to store fertilizer, machinery etc, and put calves in it. They are only both full for 4 months of the year! Why build the floor and walls of a shed and make it completely useless for anything other than silage when its empty by not putting a roof on it?
@MF6465 well if it works for you thats good.any ive seen just seemed a waste lying with silage in them 9 months of the year. theres silage in our silos for 12 months of the year as we beef cattle all year round inside,so theyre never free to store any thing in them.
theres some of your pics showing tyres on your silo along with the straw........... mustnt be that stupid :-) i know where ur coming from. hate the tyres myself.
@carrai009 Them trailers are about 10 years old, there is no point changing them until they're falling to pieces. we only do 320 acres a year. The cost of new trailers could in no way be justified, just to save maybe 20 hours a year at most.
@cossiemad87 Push of is really only necessary on tractors or a smaller machine. Flicking it like that keeps the pit much leveler an means the silo sinks very little, we used to use the push of on the older JCB, now we dont the pit is much tighter.

does the push off not work or does he just find it easier that way
gtills 10 months ago
@gtills The push of works, i just dont use it as thinner layers of grass result in better consolidation and so better silage.
MF6465 10 months ago
@MF6465 each to thier own i suppose but i do agree with the thinner the layers the better th silage

@GRASSorMUCK, At the moment our land is as hard as a rock, but in a wet summer the small trailers help.
