@inboundlight0711 I'd say it's around 3-4 years old, most triggers seem to hit their adult size within 6-10 years and this one is not near as big as they get in the wild, plus still growing in my tank about 3" a year, so I'm just guessing it's around 3-4 years. I bought it around 10" and it grew to 12-13" within a year. I have since sold it.
@Mezico Thanks for the quick reply. That's really cool. I had a Niger trigger but sold it. I still have a Clown Trigger and a Huma Picasso Trigger. My triggers just don't seem to be growing very fast. They are in a 125 gallon tank and I feed them pellets, flakes, squid, and shrimp but they still grow pretty slow. Any tips on how to get them to grow faster?
@inboundlight0711 In my experience, humu are one of the slowest growing triggers, and clowns arent much behind them. I had a clown for two years and it went from 4" to about 7" in those two years, maybe only 6.5", so only about an inch and a little bit a year. My biggest thing for growth is FEED OFTEN, not just big. Dont do just one huge feeding a day, you're way better off doing 5 small feedings with the same total amount of food.
@inboundlight0711 If you look at my video I posted last night, look at my clown tang. It's about 4" long, maybe 4.5". 4-5 months ago, it was an inch long, you can see that in my video from March or April. I attribute all that growth to 4 daily small feedings of pellets from an autofeeder, keeping him eating a lot and his metabolism going strong, plus I feed mysis and nori every other day so they get that on top of all the autofeeding.
@samubabe101 Yes, I feed way too much for what my skimmer can keep up with. You can check out later videos I took of the tank and see that I've gotten it cleaned up.
@Mezico LOVE your fish....i have a 125 aggressive with a clown tang, humu , koran and a purple tang..yours are bigger, but i'm hoping someday they get there...i'm upgrading to an 8 ft..240....That Niger is sweet! Anyway, you should dump the skimmer and build an algae scrubber...they work great...all your rock will be clean like the day you got it in a few weeks, and you can still feed heavy..i do(not as much as you obviously)....
@RobnGem2010 It's not a real palatable algae, apparently. At the time of this video there is only 1 tang in the tank, but I later added more and at one point had 6 tangs in the tank, it still had algae problems. I basically feed way too much, so there are lots of dissolved organics in the water fueling the algae bloom. I would need to stop feeding so heavily to control the algae, which would make my fish be more aggressive so I dont want that!
and im setting up a300 gal fowlr (my first) what surgion fish would u recommend (that can skool) that will eat micro and macro algea that my triggers (niger, gold heart and retangle) my loin fish (anttennata, black & red volitan) pair of maroon clowns, bird wrasse and bamboo sharks woudnt bother
@AZnavarro99 Thanks, it's a happy fish. I thought it would slow down in growth but it grew about 2 inches of total body length in the year that I had it and got a lot fatter. Two inches of growth on an already good sized fish is pretty impressive, most seem to slow down a lot by that size.
@ERNY161 I just run a 250w metal halide, a lot of the algae is because I feed too much so there is lots of nutrients in the water for the algae to absorb and grow fast with.
@my89tube I dont think so, there are a couple guys in my town who have tanks that fluctuate from 80-85 daily. Mine runs at 79 degrees steadily but I use a ReefKeeper2 controller to maintain it perfect.
@Mezico oh wow i looked up the reefkeeper 2 and that is an expensive piece of equipment. But I guess its worth it if you're fish are alive and doing well.
@my89tube It's a nice piece of equipment. It really does a lot, it will time multiple lights, run multiple pumps as a wavemaker, it monitors and controls temperature and it measures pH, plus it can dose. I bought it for $169 a couple years ago and it's one of the best investments I've ever made for the tank.
@adesotopu Depends on the size of your tank... I would get a picasso unless you have a large tank. The niger trigger gets 2 feet long in the wild. This one I have got about 12" and then I finally sold him and he was still growing fast. Picasso grow slower and stay a lot smaller. If it hits even 8" in your tank it will be a big picasso, most only get about 6 inches.
@Mezico what would be some good tankmates for a Picasso in a 55 gallon aquarium? (I have not decided on the size of my aquarium yet but I am thinking about getting a 55 gallon. If it is necessary I will get a 100 gallon.) Also could I possibly keep the niger alone in the 55 for 1-2 years?
@adesotopu Niger grow pretty slowly, so if you got a small one you might be OK in a 55 gallon for a year. Any trigger in a 55 gallon aquarium is going to end up being too big. The problem with triggers is that in smaller tanks, like anything under 100 gallons, they get bored and the way they show their boredom is attacking tankmates. So in a 55 gallon with a picasso you would need to have only tough fish and there arent many tough fish suited for a 55 gallon aquarium.
@Mezico I read somewhere that to keep triggers "not bored" you should put small pieces of rock into the tank so that they can move it around...will this work? Also which trigger in your point of view has the most personality?
@adesotopu Yep, I had little rock pieces and small clam shells in my tank that my picasso would move around. Of all the triggers, I think the picasso was the most personable, the goldheart, clown and niger all pretty much didnt care if I was around or not. The pinktail liked to see me but it was all about food. The picasso would actually watch me move around and when we watch TV would come over to that side of the tank and sit there and stare at the TV with us :)
@Mezico Alright...thanks a lot for all your help :) Is there possibly any more important information I need to know before keeping my first trigger? Thanks :D
@1stmarinespeliu Yes, it has since been fixed. You can check out some of my other more recent videos to see. I was basically feeding way more than my filtration system could take care of, so there was a lot of nutrients in the water to feed algae.
@dubcdawgs24 In this video it's about 12 inches if you include the tail streamers, about 9.5"-10" just the body and tail with no streamers. I sold it to a local lady and last I talked to her it is about 12" now just the body and pushing about 15" with tail.
@dahermitcrab It's a 210 gallon with a custom stand my brother and I built. I've got a 55 gallon tank below it for a sump that stays about 2/3 full, and about 180 pounds of live rock, so I figure I've got about 200 gallons total of water.
Since this video, I have taken out all my rocks and scrubbed them with a stiff brush. I also added an Achilles tang, so the green algae isnt even there anymore.
I dont mind suggestions at all ;) I've considered urchins but they dont mix well at all with triggers, they just bite their spines off and flip them over and kill them. A bad combo :)
niceeeeee trigggggersss i've got a little niger, love the little dude

Mezico 2 years ago
lol i did not think of that... but there are poisonous ones but i dont think you want to mess with them lol
bananatree94 2 years ago
The poisonous ones die as well, the triggers can just pick them up by a spine, flip them over and eat their soft underbody.
Urchins and triggers really dont mix well.
Mezico 2 years ago
this one owns man .......... i think you should feed em some live stuff ..... and it loks like you got some good algae growth
7milewest 2 years ago
I dont like feeding live food, I feel it makes the fish more aggressive plus it's pointless, they dont NEED live food.
I've got some good algae growth but the tang really keeps it down, it's there but it's really short.
