dont do this i work fixing computers and i get lots of ppl with their computers crashing or slow and they pay 50-200$ when all we do is the same process and change it to its original speed which should be 1-3, if u like your pc dont do it it crashes after a few weeks

its a lie,,prefetch shuld be set to 1-3 for fast..hes just making it slower hes a fucker.

This is a Myth. 5 is a non functional value. Leave this on 3 which is optimal and the default. Google "XP Myths" for more info.

ABSOLUTELY Impossible any value other than 0, 1, 2 and 3 does nothing and defaults to the optimal value of 3. This is from the programmers who wrote the feature! Thus trippling it makes Windows use 3. Which means if you saw a performance improvement that was because some other useless tweak or tweaking program had already changed it to 0 or 1.

Your university lecturer is an idiot. You cannot create values that do not exist. I have spoken directly with the Windows Client Performance Team who wrote the feature and they explained that it had only 4 functional values 0, 1, 2 and 3 any other value with cause it to use the defaults. The only person embarrassing themselves is you.

Actually you don't. There are other variables in effect here including the Task Scheduler Sevice must be set to automatic. This is not something that someone who does not know how this works can properly time by simply changing the value and rebooting since it takes multiple boots and other tasks before it becomes fully optimized.

I don't think so, this is not something that is easy to time since it requires fully understanding how the feature works, which means it takes two full cold boots + waiting 1 minute after boot + forcing the idle tasks and layout optimization before timing. Then you must time with a stop watch from pressing the power button until the desktop.

I have no way to know what state your PC was in or what timing methods you used before changing the value. I already explained that if the value was set to 0 or 1 and you change it to 5 you now force it to use 3. I have fully and extensively tested this with documented reproduceable testing methods. Once I show people how to properly test this they see no performance gains. People incorrectly watch the length the Windows Logo is visible during boot which is NOT accurate.
