How can you even begin to put a price tag on a ecological disaster of this magnitude? I would have told the CEO of BP that the price will be open ended pending on the time and effort it will take to rebuild the Gulf coast to it's original state (if that is at all possible).

If we were to go through the normal route, I am assuming the states should have deal with that matter by itself. Sometimes normal routes take way too long to be completed and the damage just get worse and people just get away easier.

@shittyfagg nationality is not a big issue to me, I have many American friends, and I appreciate Europeans and British companies among others have done some shitty things abroad too. Difference is, in other countries the news highlights issues and people make clear that they aren't happy with it; meanwhile in the States the overwhelming majority don't give a shit about oil companies and poor procedures right until the point that it rocks up on their doorstep.

We have a constitution, we have good laws that need to be adhered to, or tyranny will reign.
Until there is a trial, we will not really know the truth of what happened with the oil spill. And even once the truth comes out, Obama bears responsibility for dragging his feet.

@MrYoober Yep, I know if the tables were turned (you are correct), The US would be cursed horribly for it. However, for the most part, Americans would be equally mad at any criminal corp who destroyed waters abroad, such as BP has here.

a while back a US corp killed thousands and hurt tenss of thousands of indians when they fucked up, the US got the leaders of the company out of there and none of them paid for their crimes(as far as i know), look up Bhopal disaster.

How can you even begin to put a price tag on a ecological disaster of this magnitude? I would have told the CEO of BP that the price will be open ended pending on the time and effort it will take to rebuild the Gulf coast to it's original state (if that is at all possible).

Wow. The Young Turks are very biased. The point the congressman was making was fair. BP should be punished through the courts and not the government. I very much doubt that an American oil producer would be subjected to the same government treatment.
However, I do feel sorry for the people who those affected by this disaster.

@dazzagazza6969 The government should step in when something drastic happens. When Katrina, the previous ecological disaster happens, the government steps in. If we were to go through the normal route, I am assuming the states should have deal with that matter by itself. Sometimes normal routes take way too long to be completed and the damage just get worse and people just get away easier.

@yes4me I get what your saying but you forget that Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster that killed 1,500 people making thousands homeless. People effect could not start a lawsuit against Hurricane Katrina as its just 'wind' and has no money.
Unfortunately, the biased right-wing propaganda machines such as Fox News are unfairly drawing comparisons, which actually is quite sick.

If Americans were given unbiased news reporting I'm sure they could understand when they are being manipulated.

it seems like other republicans are coming out strongly against this guy. i suppose it makes sense when you frame it as, they have to be subtle about it, and this guy threw subtlety out the window, so he must be dealt with. but my first reaction was simply, "wow, theyre agreeing with obama on something, how bizarre."
even though i know by now that obama is just as much in bed with the corporations as they are, they usually still at least pretend to oppose him... on everything.

I think there are also some double standards here-its ok for american companies to cause financial mess outside of their shores and abuse workers in asia but what a surprise-no government enquiry. You guys did the same with Toyota...seems you dont like foreign competition in what is a free market/laissez faire society. Also-its BP NOT British Petroleum-this only adds to anti Brit sentiment which is a shame coz we have tremendous respect for you guys

hes apologizing because this whole mess is the biggest over reaction in history. Before anyone bites my head off- yes, this is worst oil spill in history but just think who benefits from BP's investments in the Gulf, not just BP but the people of misissipi and the surrounding states and ultimately the rest of american people through the tax revenues and contracts.

Finally an American politician that understands that the company is BP not British Petroleum. They changed the name years ago. Almost equal amounts of BP stock are owned in America compared to Britain. And the company responsible for the cut off valve that would stop this kind of situation happening was Haliburton, an AMERICAN company.

What Obama did by threatning BP and extorting $20 billion is no different than a common thug robbing a man in the streets. What Obama has done violates every free market principle this country was founded on, that the government wouldn't own everything, that people would be responsible for their actions, and that we would have the freedom to pursue happiness, all of which Obama has taken away. Every single member of government should apologize to BP and the costs should be covered by the left.
