I'm no social historian but I know that the Romans had many classes of prostitutes ranging from the street-walkers to the very very high class prostitutes (such as this one). They were incredibly desirable, sought after and often highly independent and well educated too.

Eh...not the Romans. See Augustus' intense efforts to try to encourage monogamy and sex within marriage only. The Romans were never big on the whole sacred sex thing.
