Just curious: Is polka played in Eastern Ukraine too? Or just the areas which in 19th century used to be under Austria and later under Poland?

No Polka in Eastern Ukraine, or Central Ukraine. Only Western part that you mentioned. Ukranians thought that since the Eastern part was too Russified that the West would be more Ukrainian. However, the Polish Cultural influence in the Lviv region could not be avoided whether it be dance music food, and religion.

Polka, originally, is not a Polish dance but a Czech one. It was popularized in Central Europe, from Croatia to Germany, and later taken to North America by immigrants from that region.
