How would you suggest tuning a board that is going to be used predominantly in the park but both sending bigger kickers and jibbing? My last board had completely rounded edges and I felt like I had little or no control esp. on icier days, which I the east coast sees a lot of. Also, would a 2 deg bevel be a better option than a light or complete detune as it keeps a sharp edge on the board?
@Junkboy692 Never tried a nail file before, but i am guessing it wont work or it would take a really really really really long time... Your local snowboard shop, local hill or even your next door neighbor might have file one you can use.
So I plan to detune my edges for more park riding for now. But, I am mostly a pow rider. If I detune then sharpen and go back and forth, will I eventually loose my edge together after some time?
@foreverforum260 YES you will loose all the steel edge if you plan to try to go back and forth...BEVEL your base edge...we're releasing an updated version of this vid soon, stay tuned (pun)...
It's been ages since I have been out, but I always baught everything from The House. I'm trying to get out again soon but don't want to use my time tuning and detuning my snowboard. Does The House offer the services you mentioned, rounding off edges? If so, how much is it? Thanks.
@MossMagicCrunch A wax is about 10 buck and for a full tune is around 25. We could detune your edges but people normally do that themselves, by using a file or dragging the boards across some cement or riding it on dirt. But feel free to come in, we would be happy to let you use one of our files, if you just need a detune.
@xsporian It should say on sticker on the base of the board. also the manufacturer website would be a good place to check. or you can use a metal ruler or straight edge, Put it across your base and see if you have a little gap where the ruler meets the edges.
@LIVEtoFLY09 Yes, especially the take offs and the landings. alot of snowboards theses days have a park specific edge bevel. allowing you to keep you edges and still have the catch free fun of a detuned snowboard.
@qtip1195 Most modern decks have some sort of edge hold tech that even detuned, will grip on hardpack or ice. Mervin has Magnetraction(MTX), Never Summer has Variogrip, Arbor has a new unblended tri-radial side cut. I rode a detuned Never Summer Evo 151 all over the East Coast on the hardpack blacks and didn't have any problems..
@BIGMANBALLER32 I would use a stone of some sort. just your average honing stone for sharpening knifes will work. The sandpaper isn't going to hold up to the burrs and ridges you put in it with the file. It won't hurt your board if you try it though, probably just won't do a very good job.
So are there any risks to detuning your board? I assume you can tune it again later but what effect will this have on the board? I'm just learning to snowboard and live on the east coast near a very icy hill so I feel I need to sharpen my edges but what if I want to go on the park later once I improve? If it helps at all I'm mostly looking towards eventually going on the halfpipe.
@peterkrawiec You would detune it the same why you would any other board. With Magne Traction you are pretty safe to detune your board and it should still hold a great edge just about everywhere. if you want to sharpen you edges you can pick up a Magne Traction snowboard tool for around $15- it just has a smaller file which allows you to tune around the contact points.
@thehouseboardshop thanks a lot. you are the man!....you're the reason I actually bought the skate banana from your video review from last year....and I'm glad I watched it because I'm shredding VT and NH harder than ever and the Magne Traction really does cut into the icy hard pack like butter!- thats what I have to deal with all the time here and it makes it manageable and fun.....the skate banana has progressed my riding DRAMATICALLY!
hey, i am starting to hit rails and stuff this season, if i got one of those sharpening tools beveled the edge to a 89 degree bevel would that be like detuning?
Nice vid man I agree with rounding off the nose and tail but I think it would be better to put like a 3 degree bevel on the effective edge. That way you don't make your board totally useless outside of the park but still not catch on jibs
@BurtonTahoe That one specifically is the 2008 Burton Un Inc 158. Yeah, it was a pretty fantastic graphic. All the sizes have a different adorable little baby animal. We still have all of them 152-160.
Hey im riding a new burton board so i have the PDE's on it, how much will it effect my high speed turning if i detune my edges between the bindings cause im starting to progress my park riding now but still would like some high speed turning ability cheers
@RangerJakJak12 Unless you're really having a problem with catching edges on rails I would say just leave them alone. If you hit hard pack with no edges going fast I would say you're more screwed there than you would be on a rail with sharp edges.
Hey. I just got a Rome Machine 2010 and I'm just wondering if I need to detune the board in between the bindings. The edges already have a -3 degree angle so it is raised up from the snow (which will help with rails). So yeah, do I need to detune in between the bindings if I plan on riding 50/50 park and downhill freeride (keep in mind that the board has that -3 degree raised edges)?
@michaelskating Edge bevels work really good and are super handy because on most you can set the degree of your edge. For park if you're going to be riding rails and boxes all day just get rid of those edges. Round them off because are going to do you more harm than good.
@michaelskating mmm.. there isn't really one that works for both. It's either one or the other. You could try doing like 3 degrees on the base and 2 degrees on edge. But the best thing for having grip in snow with dull edges is Magne-Traction, or what ever brand's version of it. Having those extra contact points helps out SOOOO much with or without sharp edges.
Waist width refers to the middle of the board on any board. The widest part I am speaking of in the video is the nose and the tail (the widest parts).
I think I get it. The widest part is where the sidecut is parallel to the long axis. So 1.5 inches is approx. where the sidecut carve arc starts to curve in the opposite direction, hence not neededor wanted.
I read somewhere that if you want to ride mostly and carve, you start detuning at the contact points. Then about 1 inch in for normal riding. Then more as you do more park riding. Is this true? After like 1.5 inches like in the suggestion, does it make a difference when detuning more? ...besides the middle for rails that is.
Hey, I am looking to buy some gear for next season and I have never bought a board, bindings or boots before. What do I need to know to buy this gear?
my finish on the top of my board is peeling about 3-5mm wide near the edges. it appears its just a type of seal over the main part of the board, should i be worried about water damage? and what about rust on the metal edges, should anything be done about that?
Take steel wool to the edges to remove the rust. As far as the crack goes stick some 2 part epoxy in it clamp it up overnight and sand it down the next day.
I just got a brand new Lamar mission freestyle board, my question is do I need to detune it's edges at all? I won't be doing much park riding so should the edges come factory ready and it's best I don't do anything to my edges?
yes. lamar boards are very mass produced snowboards. even though your not going to do a lot of park riding, detuning edges is crucial for a good freeriding board also.
the 4 spots where the board is widest is uselsess? I disagree. Sure the nose and tail are pointless to have sharp, and make you catch on a box or whatever. But the corner edges? those are the most effective turning parts.
due to teh slight camber of the board, the four corners of the board where its widest will catch the snow the most. in detuning the edge, you going to catch edge less and have more freedom while still haveing the sharpened edges in between to rely on for carving and such when your board flexes flat and digs in..at least thats what i get from it
I have a burton custom I use for everything that I just detune the tip and tail and a capita scaremaster for park that I just got. The scaremaster is almost 100% for park, maybe 90% so should I round everything except right over the bindings?
I would detune the nose and tail aggressively but for the rest of the edge I would mildly round off the whole edge. Baby steps are good here a little at a time and you should figure it out after just a couple times riding.
Hey I was wondering I bought a technine icon (08-09 model not this years) anyways its a freestyle board i want to get into riding park but i also ride the hill alot should I file down the nose and tail edges? and mildly dull the rest of the edge? if i do that will i be able to ride the hill and carve still ?
