The interesting thing about heroin is that, in pure form (which Bayer presumably made), it has relatively few side-effects other than, um, death if you OD.

Obviously, you never get the pure form, and what with intravenous application and the extreme addictiveness, you tend to get a *lot* of side-effects.

I don't really see why this is supposed to be covered up.  The US government tested LSD on basically anyone it could get its hands on. Nobody thought anything about nicotine until the 50's. Furthermore, pure white heroin is actually starched and mixed with a drug called fentanyl, which is an opioid that is 50x stronger than heroin. The majority of poppy production is from afganistan, with southeast asia being the center of production. hence, the Golden Triangle.

I think that before airing this piece the person should also have mentioned that the German military used heroin on its soldiers during the war to keep them warm, and compliant, and not feel as much pain as a soldier without heroin would have. Maybe this is the reason the Germans lost the war. Their soldiers were junkies who were consantly high.
