  • does anyone know the name of the song that she is using?

  • ++

  • Almost every Chinese Classical Dance has a historical story with it. If Contemporary/ballet dancers don't know the story, they can't perform Chinese dance well. This dance present important history of Tang Dinasty, the king love his wife - this drunk lady so much, stay with her all the time, don't care about his country, and finally lead Tang Dinasty falled.

  • i live in Poland she is beauty and her dance is beauty, i love Chinese dancers, they are like flowers, my boy is Chinese and i sametimes see Chinese dance its beauty, beauty, and beauty, i dont know if people in Europe can dance like her. Sorry for my English

  • did anyone else notice, but one of her hair clip thingie fell at 3:00

  • Throughout the dance i was thinking She looks drunk ore gone crazy then i read the info.. XD

  • Lets just appreciate the art. This is definitely no traditional Chinese dance. It say its a contemporary dance with a cultural/historical flare. It is completely new.

The dancer expressed the feeling of the concubine beautifully, really like it.

  • some ppl r just stupid! i can feel the beauty that the dancer conveys is touching my soul! im sinking into it and getting a little tipsy ,too

  • i would love to know who this beautiful dancer is and what she is doing now! please tell me if you know @sugarsweet87

  • she's beautiful

  • @maniacram Please don't insult this dance. If you are familiar with Chinese dance you'd see that this is a classical Chinese dance. I'm not going to bother explaining the differences between Chinese classical dance and contemporary dance, but you'd be able to find many examples of both on youtube. It's insulting when you declare that something with thousands of years of history and subtlety is the same as something that just popped up recently.

  • @maniacram Furtermore, the dancer is Chinese and this competition took place in China. Taoli competition is a very prestigious competition that takes place every three years. Only the best of the best professional Chinese dance dancers are allowed to qualify and compete.

  • @sugarsweet87 I am not insulting, i love Chinese history and want china to remain authentic to its asian roots. I think Chinese opera is a much better and more magnificent example of original Chinese culture. It has so much feeling and is almost meditative. If you say this is classical Chinese dance then thats fine, I won't argue anymore.

  • @maniacram i think the misunderstanding is that, u seem to assume that just because the dance has fluid movement then it must come from the west. well i really do not know how you come to that conclusion. u really should study the chinese dance first. i suppose u know very little of it then. the chinese opera is not a dance, its more like a drama. then again, chinese dance is very varied. not everything comes from the west, you should get your mindset right.

  • @vivspring Excuse me but you are not even able to provide me with a name for this dance discipline and you are Chinese. You are telling me I know little. If the Chinese dances were that varied, the Chinese people would've come up with different names for each discipline to differentiate them. The reason I am calling this Ballet-ish is because it is common knowledge that you guys do ballet at various prestigious events. You do their dances and they do your martial arts, so its an exchange maybe.

  • @maniacram There are different disciplines. Chinese dance is a giant umbrella that encompasses Classical, Folk, and Ethnic. Classical is differentiated into different time period. Folk is differentiated by region. Within Ethnic, there are 56 different styles. If you think is that all dance to us is just ballet, then you are mistaken. Google Taoli competition and see what comes up. Taoli competition is the most prestigious dance competition in China, and it's all Chinese dance, no ballet at all.

  • @maniacram chinese dance evolved thousands of years ago and how can you compare it with western ballet that came into China much later AND WHAT MAKES YOU THINK U KNOW THE CHINESE CULTURE BETTER THAN THE CHINESE THEMSELVES? and yes i do not deny the fact that the chinese did learn ballet and SO WHAT? the whole world is learning ballet. the chinese do it very well and even better than you. so? what do you want to say about it. are u jealous because indian dance is not as popular? open your MIND

  • @maniacram and so what if the chinese performs ballet around the world? what's the problem? if they do it well then whycant they perform around the world? just because u cant do it? and just because they perform ballet well does not mean they do not dance their own classical dance. your argument just do not stand. and just because you glorify your own dance, does that mean you cannot learn dances from other culture? what a closed minded person

  • @vivspring Also ballet went West to East, from France & Italy to Russia. The Russians brought it to china in the 1930s. After your cultural revolution of the 60s when you guys rejected your own culture, ballet flourished. You guys added a little local flavor to suit the costumes. If the ancient Chinese saw this, they would be thinking, "Huh.... freaky!!", because these dances wouldn't suit their aesthetics. It is more like athletics than dance. Search "learn chinese dance", see what comes up.

  • @maniacram Yes Russians brought ballet to China, but that doesn't mean that we rejected our culture. Far from it. The Cultural Revolution actually made dance flourish. Multiple dance academies opened at that time, and the best of the best toured around the country. My dance teacher was trained at that time by the best Chinese dance and ballet teacher that China had. If Louis XIV saw ballet today, he'd think that it's freaky too, doesn't mean it's not ballet, just that the dance form progressed.

  • @sugarsweet87 Ok you are right. Based on what you say, I assume this dance looks more like ballet just to the untrained eye. Also if you say that the fundamentals of the dance forms are different, then I will have to accept that. I will say one thing even though it might not be politically correct, to me Chinese girls come across as way more graceful and expressive than westerners. I just felt we Easterners should maintain our own culture. Is there any old chinese book or thesis on dance?

  • @maniacram it seems like that you only know ballet. hey, not every elegant dance has kinda relation with ballet or comes from it.

  • @maniacram oh stop bitching and start enjoying the dance

  • @maniacram and who says chinese dancers don't move their arms like that? how many ways are there to your arm actually? so you've seen dancers move their arms similiarly in contemporary, that doesn't mean anyting.

  • @aprilthrusday You ask, 'how many ways are there to move your arm actually?' Really? You think of dance moves as a set of moves or just sequence of predefinied steps is it? No wonder your dance moves come across as gymnastics or excersise workouts to us. You realize that the same exact dance move can look vastly different when done by two persons coming from different dance disciplines don't you. If it looks similar to contemporary then it does mean a lot of things buddy.

  • @maniacram There is no point for you to continue to insult Chinese dance. To say that Chinese dance movements come across as gymnastics or exercise workouts just tells me that you don't know anything about Chinese dance. Classical Chinese dance emphasize on the "internal emotions", that a movement is initiated by breaths, and the "feeling" of the movement has to start internally and spill over. So the same arm movement would be initiated differently by Chinese dance and would look different.

  • @sugarsweet87 I am saying is this is not chinese dance, this is a recreated art form created with western influences while wearing 'chinese' costumes. Burma was much influenced by Old china than India and they didn't absorb much western influence as their country is still very much closed both economically and otherwise. If you take a look at their folk dance forms it could give us an idea of the kind of movements the chinese originally had. But still it is obviously not the same.

  • @maniacram But this is Chinese dance. It's not adopted from somewhere. I should know because I study the folk, ethnic, and classical forms of Chinese dance. This is classical Chinese dance, which looks very different from folk and ethnic, but it's still Chinese dance. The roots of classical Chinese dance came from thousands of years ago, it's not something adopted. The techniques are very different from ballet, and the central belief of how the body should move is the opposite from ballet.

  • @maniacram You probably think that only dances with fans, handkerchiefs and ribbons are Chinese dance. They are, but they belong to folk dance. Folk and Classical forms both have their roots from thousands of years ago, it's just that folk dance originate from the customs and lives of ordinary people, whereas Classical chinese dance came from dance styles from thousands of years ago, wushu, and Peking Opera. Hence why folk dance seems more "earthy" and classical seems more elegant.

  • @maniacram So classical Chinese dance is not a recreated art form. While dancers do supplement their training with ballet, the foundamentals of the dance form is entirely different. Turning in instead of turning out. Using a lot of upper body rather than keeping the upper body straight. Using breaths to initiate movements. The ideology behind movements is that everything's round, there's no angles unless the movement came from Peking Opera and Wushu. Contemporary/ballet don't have that.

  • @maniacram to the untrained eye, you may think that it looks similar to contemporary dance because you've never been exposed to Chinese dance. It's like someone who thinks that African dance is the same as hiphop. But how the movements are initiated, the detail in the hands, the difference in how the body moves (everything is initiated by breaths, as opposed to contemporary where breaths aren't needed) makes Chinese dance very different to watch as well as to dance compared to contemporary.

  • @sugarsweet87 When people of one culture adopt the practice of another, obviously it will not be a 100% perfect adaption. The South Americans created Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the process of learning Jiu-Jitsu from Japanese. The hand steps and body movements here look more intricate, however if you need a trained eye to tell apart the differences then it doesn't mean that it is vastly different either. It is a fact that these people prepare by learning ballet as ballet is very popular in china.

  • @maniacram It would be wrong for people to say that just because there are techniques involved in this dance that contemporary/ballet dancers would be able to do it. No they can't. Chinese dance in general is extremely precise. The emphasis is to turn emotions inward until it fills your entire body. Unlike contemporary dance in which bigger movement means more emotion, often in Chinese dance it's the tiny movements that shows emotions. So you don't end up with explosive movements but flowy ones.

  • @maniacram Contemporary/ballet dancers in general aren't trained to turn their emotions inward, so when they try to do Chinese dance, they can't their eyes to communicate, or understand how a teeny breath can make the difference between a flat movement with no emotions and one that's filled with feelings. So when they do Chinese dance, it looks rough and has "no taste, no feelings", as we would say it. I hope this helps you to understand how Chinese dance is an entirely different discipline.

  • If you pay attention to the mannerism, it shows how a beautiful lady seduces and interests one's eyes. You can see the shyness & coyness of a lady...

  • This dance is seductive and sexy. Of course, since it's about a concubine. :)

  • Ok, time for a friendly comment! Does anyone know the official name for chinese traditional dress like the one the dancer is wearing (Beautiful dancer by the way) ?

  • @Astrathiul

It is call Hanfu. 汉服 (in Mandarin). You can google to find vary design according to different dynasty. The dancer hear wear the dynasty Tang 唐 (in Mandarin).

  • hi guys, what is happening in the comments?

omg shitstorm, im out of here

  • Out of all the Chinese classical dance videos on this site, for some reason this remains my favorite, solo or otherwise. I hope this dancer got other accolades if she didn't win this particular competition :D

  • I suggest you learn to appreciate Chinese culture before you appreciate other cultures. You wouldn't have contaminated this thread with your garbage if you really were a lover of art.

  • @super0psychedelic I realize my news sources may be different from yours,it's very possible that I'm completely wrong and you're completely right, and when I made those comments before you came along,I was repeating remarks my taiwanese and hong kong friends made in daily conversation.I'm sorry if I insulted anyone;I was being presumptuous, and I'm sorry I overreacted;I though YOU were the one being rude. We both have better things to do than defend or attack govts. Let's just enjoy these dances.

  • You truly have an eye for the banal, I know as everyone does that India's population will cross China's one day but the fact remains that China is still the most populated country on the planet. I just hope that one sunny day the Indians adopt their own "one child policy". You clearly have been watching too much CCTV, by what twisted logic did you conclude that I'm Indian?

  • @super0psychedelic You happen to state you're from India on your profile. I could ask you the same of how you concluded I'm Chinese.

  • I also concur that singing hossanahs about one's country doesn't amount to jingoism, but vilifying other countries out of the blue does. Don't know about logic, but you do need a lesson in epistomology because why you brought up math is beyond me. You're calling me a "racist"? Need a mirror? All you need to do is scroll down to your first post. Since you ask, racism and jingoism are two sides of the same coin and both can be equally dangerous.

  • You're right, "officially" Taiwan is recognised to be a part of China by many countries, but unofficially they all have ties with ROC just as they would with any other sovereign nation, that has been the case for over 60 years now. I only compared the rabbit and Chinese population as a joke, too bad if you lack a sense of humour, I leave inane "research" for the likes of you.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not here to prove or disprove anything, I'm here to show a mirror to your face. For the record, Taiwan is recognised to be a "developed country", it's going to take China decades to get to where Taiwan is now. What beats me is how you jumped to the conclusion that they are "screwing up their economy" by not being with China, That observation is clearly beyond your intellectual capacity.I would like to reiterate, for the Chinese to lecture other countries about "ambition" smacks of hypocrisy.

  • Just beautiful. Is this supposed to be concubine Yang Gui Fei?

  • love her outfit!!!!

  • I just want to express my greatest respect to the great Chinese culture, which is so rich in nuances and so refined. The dance is perfect! Few people in the world can repeat this choreography. Thanks for sharing!

  • I just want to express my greatest respect to the great Chinese culture, which is so rich in nuances and so refined. The dance is perfect! Few peoplee in the world can repeat this choreography. Thanks for sharing!

  • @merchyllyn They didn't. The ones that left were from Hong Kong, which was a British colony, and Taiwan, whose ambitious government kept insisting they weren't Chinese because they wanted autonomous power and thus screwing their economy. China isn't poor either, though I do agree that they have a giant gap between the wealthy and working class. As for breeding like rabbits, I think your confusing China with India.

  • @Yidenia - Listen you yourself, you spew filth about others just to feel better about yourself and your country. It's rich of the Chinese to lecture others about "power" and "ambition". You're right, China is still a very poor country with incredible disparity among the various strata of society. I doubt if there are 1.3 billion rabbits in the world. You Chinamen are gaining a reputation across the globe for being jingoistic .

  • @super0psychedelic This disproves my points how, exactly? How am I spewing filth? I think you're confusing others with yourself; I'm not the one calling names. My comment on Taiwan was stated because the Taiwanese ARE recognized as Chinese in official international politics, and they ARE ambitious and ARE screwing up their economy. There aren't 1.3 billion rabbits in the world—there are several billion, so do your research before trying to use arguments.

  • @super0psychedelic Finally, saying something good about a country does not automatically mean one is jingoistic. Learn your math and the rules of logic. If you hate China so much, why shouldn't we just call you a racist? You think that's better than a jingoist? If so then there's no hope for you.

  • @super0psychedelic Everyone knows that India's population will soon surpass China's. It's your own fault for making an irresponsible and derogatory comment about having too many children when it can easily reflect badly on your own country. To placate, I love Indian culture, I love their dances and their music, and I wouldn't mind having more Indians in the world, but if you shoot yourself in the foot, that's your problem and only yours.

  • amazing! i think i am in love lol

  • This is a true example of art in Chinese culture. After watching this video, my mind just keeps spinning swayfully .. It's her movements beautiful.

  • @strominheaven

  • @strominheaven

  • @strominheaven ....额。。

  • Piękne - ~~

  • how a wonderful dance!!

  • Are there audio recordings of this music available? I like the Lotus dance too...

  • We just went over the story of Yang Yu-huan in my Premodern Chinese Lit class...no wonder her tragedy has inspired so much art! I don't know that much about the culture in each dynasty, but I love the cultural melting pot that the Tang was, plus the clothing and dance is so amazing! I want to visit Xi'an back in its Chang'an days...

  • beautiful dance and culture !!

  • It's about the highest concubine of Tang dynasty getting a little tipsy

  • because this dance is about a drunk beauty, that's why she kept turning.

  • this is what i do when im tipsy!! hahaha...no im just kidding, but this is a great dance! im from taiwanese background, but you know how the chinese and taiwanese are. taiwanese claims to be their own, but chinese govt wants taiwan. all the same culture, except for the native indian cultures!

  • @rr33463 why man could not live together with peace? everybody think about himself...

  • it's hanfu汉服 ,chinese traditional costume. and what in this vedio is hanfu in tang dynasty. it's sold in china. you could check out my hanfu vedio

  • just one word... BEAUTIFUL

  • chi na ja wa hi ao

  • mkyagi: Yes, I have. I nearly got married with a mainland Chinese. My misfortune she died in a car crash. I am not interested in pseudo Chinese culture a copy of the stupid Western jingoism with guitar and coke. China has a continuous superior culture than the rest of the world & don't you forget it, me boy. West needs another thousand years to understand Chinese culture & its nuance. So, if you want to play guitar & drink coke, that is your prerogative but don't tell me about Chinese culture.

  • Hi Amoralis123

There are lots Chinese value their own culture which has been continuing for about 5000 years. The government also start to value the rich culture. I am a Chinese, really love and be proud of our own culture. Thank you for your support!

  • @amoralis123

sorry for your lost. god bless her soul

  • @amoralis123 Or you could accept that every culltures different and that America just hasnt been around that long to develop a very unique culture.

    Either one works.

  • This is by far the most graceful dance I have ever seen. Her movements connect so seemlessly! Utterly Exquisite! Sublime! Bravo!

  • Absolutely excellent interpretation, than you for sharing this super video

  • China, Siien, Cathay ... is sublime, mature, confident & ready to give the world something that the world has not yet seen .. Tranquility. I hope the world, especially our stupid Western World, with its upmanship mentallity & imposing trait lets China emerge. "Make this place a better place for us" Confucius: "what happens after we die, no one knows" & 'I don't really care'. This stupid Abrahamic preparation for the Heaven is nonsense. Enjoy what this life has to offer.

  • you've clearly never been to china...

  • I admire the sublime grace with which this dancer expresses the sorrow of a betrayed concubine in a drunken reverie, it's all so surreal!

  • who was the dancer???

    she is great!

  • my goodness...is she made from wind and wather?.....

  • bravo!

  • This is living proof that China has so many good things to offer the world. Thank you China.

  • Yes, you are right. China has so many good things to offter to the world, for example my Logitech Laser computer mouse is made in china!! :-P

No... I am just kiding :-D. China has really many wonderfull thngs to share with the world, and I am glad about it.

    Thank you China -

  • Beautiful dance, beautiful Hanfu.

  • Very nice Thank !

  • I just wanted to say this is so beautiful i do classical western ballet i was so moved:-)!!

I put a Chinese poem that for some reason reminded me of it:-)

    Thank you from Ireland:-)

I feel this comes from the place of moonlight and magic fairies and spirits:-)

Then when i take my own dance classes i remember how cruel and tough to dance! Beauty through suffering but to appear free and effortless and spiritual this is like this:-) Chinese dance has so many levels thanks you:-)

  • yuè yè

  • wow.....she is so beautiful, and her spine is extremly flexible, and her inner ear is strong, i could not look away it was so beautiful

  • Very nice Thank you!

  • Isnt this a Tang Dynasty hanfu ??

  • where did she buy that dress?! so nice! and her dance is brillant!

  • many of the chinese dance supply stores have it (or atleast similar), or you can order to your needs. Not sure about online shops tho

  • I know! it's definately Versace or Dior!

  • It's not. We can wish that it is, but it's not.

  • any idea what the music is called/where to dl?

  • She lost a hair ornament. xD

  • That waa really beautiful.

Thank you so much for uploading

  • that must be some amazing hair gel! it stays perfect! :D

  • She's smiling, but why is the music so sad? Why her smile looks so sad, too?

  • The music is sad because despite her smile she is not happy, cuz she is a concubine.

  • But this concubine is VERY VERY different. She's got the most power of her time abd was the only favorite of the emperor, dispite he had other 3000 ladies in the court. She was very very happy during her time except toward the end which was not very pleasant according to the history.
