Being a huge fan of Jeanette And Nelson..I followed them from a very early age..They were magic together on screen from the first time they met...They appeared separate in a few movies but it wasnt the same....Tho Phantom of the opera was excellent..Off screen their love was a triangle an problems...But I believe they were soul mates....
for me-I can hear my grandad now stood in the kitchen with his face foamed up cutthroat in hand singing this with all the emotion of the singers themselves. He never cut himself shaving once!
I love this version...of course, being younger, I first heard this song while watching Mel Brook's 1970's comedy "Young Frankenstein" where Madeline Kahn hilariously sing this song during her orgasm while having sex with Frankenstein !
Jeanette Macdonald: The looks, the voice, the talent.....that combination only comes along once every hundred years. There is no one in Hollywood of equal stature and talent today...sad.
Jeanette and Nelson both sang at Jean Harlow`s funeral. Jeanette was so overcome with grief that she could not sing the song without breaking down in tears. Nelson finished the song alone with his arm around Jeanette. Jean loved Nelson and Jeanette. "Ah Sweet Mystery of Life" and "indian Love Call" were her favorite songs. Lorraine
Lorraine, Thanks for the additional history on this magnificent couple. I am genetically insane over music. My uncle Frank Signorelli wrote the music to "Stairway to the Stars" in 1939 along with Mitchell Perish and Matt Matt Malneck. It was a Glenn Miller #1 hit and has become a standard. Just another great song from this fabulous era. Again thanks, you may correct me anytime sweetie. best regards...Sig
I love the music of Glenn Miller. Thank You for sharing the information about your uncle with Us. I love the music of the 1930`s, 40`s and 50`s. Lorraine
In actuality Jeanette and Nelson constantly quarreled and resented one another. To see them come together at a moment like that is refreshing to hear.
@9TheMajor This is what Hollywood and Louis B. Mayer wanted you to believe...Read the biography of Jeanette and Nelson by Ms. Rich to get the real story.
@9TheMajor - If this is correct was it a clash of egos? What a shame that this sort of thing enters into relationships among we humans! Still, they hide it pretty well if what you say is kosher.

Nelson Eddy sucked; he was no Lawrence Tibbett; he wasn't even close.
Also, if you see the clip that was the basis for this, he was pretty fat, too.
Jeannette Macdonald, on the other hand, could sing and even act, too; her sister was "Grandmama" on The Addams Family tv show.

I didn't know it was song at Jean Harlow's funeral. How sweet and sad at the same time. All versions of this song are beautiful.

This was by far the best sung O Sweet Mystery of Life. Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy - Hollywood singers of true quality!
