This is nowhere close to the veil that muslim woman wear. This thing looks like somekind of pirate headscarf. Why dont you wear a wig? like many jewish woman do.
most hasidic women shave their head first then put on a wig and then put on the fabric. hasids unlike actual Jews have very serious superstitions about hair.
many hasidic women are told by their leaders that any visible head hair will result in infertitlity. naturally these women never took a decent bio course so they buy into these theories. its not just about culture...its very anti woman.
@FRYrebecky It means that the whole law of covering for modesty was first followed by the Jewish people. Many Ashkenazi also wear scarves, it's only Chabad Lubavich that wears wig and if you are in Chabad whether you are Sephardic or Ashkenazi they wear wigs. But in Israel 85% of the women wear the scarf and 15% wigs.
@YehudaMizrahi Oh yeah, I agree with that.. The Jews were the first modest people. :)
Where I am from only the sefardim women wear scarves, except for those few ashkenazim. When I say wear scarves I mean all the time or most of them, not when they feel like it. Yes, I know Chabad only wear wigs because of what their Rebbe said. Only in Israel I see that, Is it because there are most sefardim? But here it's known that only sefardim wear the scarves.
@FRYrebecky Yes but even our Sefardic Rabbis who are the ones with the most religious power in Israel has said that wigs are not acceptable because it looks like your normal hair pretty much. Well my mother's side is half Moroccan half Yemenite and my father's family were original Jews from the land of Israel and we always wear wigs, in my family tradition our married women wear it even in the house because we believe it's a blessing. Mizrahi is also a Ashkenazi name btw, Breslov wear scarf now
@YehudaMizrahi Yes, I know that's why I say that the sefradim here only wear the scarves. Here, where I live, I don't know about anywhere else. Yeah well, yeah some say you also have to cover your hair in the house...this I heard a while ago.
Oh I didn't know it was also ashkenaz, All the Mizrahi's here are syrian sefardim, so I thought. But I didn't know that it's for both.
@FRYrebecky Yes in my Synagogue the Rabbi of Israel Yosef prohibited the wig wearing so most Ashkenazim wear both scarves and big hats, as long as the whole hair is not showing.
@YehudaMizrahi Yes of course, that's the point of either the wig or hat- to not have hair showing. I personally don't care what a person wears, everyone to their own custom.
@cabbitt511 Oh because we don't call them tichels here. I think tichel is said by one section of Jews. I thought it was Yiddish...idk why. I love the look with the tichel then :)
@moshe456 Her hair should be for her husband... It's a very attractive thing and imagine a married woman flauting her hair. Kol Hakavod to your mother, it's not easy. ")
@CaligirlSofia It's called a Tichel or Mitpachat. Religious Jewish women cover their hair as well but after marriage so only the husband can see her hair. In Judaism, the scarf is a sign of modesty and marriage. This tradition has been followed since the time of our ancestors. Shalom
I ran this through a translator, and are you asking about shaving hair? You mean, like shaving the head? No, Jewish women don't shave their hair. The covering is if they are married to cover their hair, though they sometimes use wigs or hats instead. There are a few extreme Jews who do shave their heads, but it's not normal among Jewish women at all. Even head covering is only done by the very Orthodox/strict Jewish community.
@cabbitt511 It's not the EXTREME women, it's a group of orthodox jews that have this custom. I know plenty of very religious, extreme women who still have hair on their head.
Yes, it's actually quite common among many religions and ethnic groups. Christian women use veilings, bonnets, and other hair coverings. Jewish women use tichels, snoods, hats, wigs, and other items. A lot of Indian/Hindu women cover their hair with their sari in some areas of India as well. Hair covering is pretty much a cultural universal if you go back in history, though in some places it has been set aside. Think even fifty years ago in America. Almost all proper ladies wore hats outside!
wearing the head scarf was done so long before islam came. As a muslim, and a young adult i feel that i should wear hijab(veil, headscarf) for my own personal reasons and its my choice, and also the other womens choices.
And also wearing the head scarf is a sign of respect to God.
@SngFrmTheHrt there r other , much more important ways to show your respect to God...hmmm, I think wearing a scarf is a good idea when u want to pray, go to church, etc. But I have seen girls wearing headscarves who were much naughtier than us...
I don't know why TURKEY can't differentiate between secularism and anti-Islaicism, banning scarf is anti-Islamic and not secular, even USA,UK they r not Muslim countries but secular that's why they did not ban scarf b/c doing so is anti-Islamic, not secular and against basic HUMAN RIGHTS.

We share so much in common it is said to see Jews/zionists and Muslims fight over palestine.
If only Muslims and Jews did not have a conflict over palestine how beautiful would that be!

Not so also Vizhnitz & Gur wear wigs.
Most Litvish women also wear wigs.
In Hebrew tichel is called mitpachat & sheitel is paya.

@rocky0713a Yup you are right, but in Israel lot's of Visnitz and Gur wear scarves now, especially because Rabbi Ovadia Yosef rejects Sheitels.

I think covering with the scarves are only for sefardic women because they have a different approach than the ashkenazim to the wigs.
