I understand the the topic of wing clipping is a very emotional one for some people. But emotion does not trump science, and the science shows a strong indication that the development of a birds potential comes from it's brain growth in the first few years. Part of that growth is the birds ability to fly and move and the co-ordination of the neurons in these tasks affect other tasks (neuro plasticity).
Feeling strongly against this and name calling does not make you right :0
Many bird owners don't clip, and do recall training (fly training), which is a great "sport" for the bird... You need to know what you're doing though, so that you don't lose your pet. A harness can be used also.
whatta loser hes assumin the wing rule cos he left his wings uncut for that period wataa sad 1 get a life and nmba 1 doesnt matter what o his wings do the talkin
Ive had my grey for 14 years and learned she will say what she wants when she wants, lol. But certain actions do get a proper response; like seeing me with my keys means Bye, bye.
i have a lovebird less than 1 year old and it's winges is been cut for he very firsts days...that why is difficult to make triks?pls answer?should i continiu trying to train it?
my african grey is 5 years old and hes well aware of what happens when im goin out somewhere
i put my jacket on and he does the zip noise and says See ya later Alf! similar to your 'do you want a scratch' example. he should say see ya later to me not to himself. (this was my dad who made that mistakel) Once a parrot has learnt a phrase for a certain situation, is it possible to change that phrase or will it be that way permanently?
also youre great with Tui im sorry to hear about your loss.
jonny~ to ur question.. sometimes its customary to clip the flight feather just a tad so that u dont run the risk of losing ur pet and it allows them to fly far enough but not off..but i do agre with the gentlemen in the video .. thas why i only clip wings after 2 years but most hand feed raised birds never leave there owner and fly away
clipping the wings, prevents it from flying.. but its only the tips of them. They come clipped when you buy them at a local petstore, but if hand raised usually they arent clipped..
Great Advice Andrew. I do not plan to clip my greys wings and he will wear a harness when going out side. It also builds the birds security to let it fly also.
hi, i have an african grey parrot. i had him for 2 weeks now, i bought him from somebody else that had him before.
he doesnt bite and he is quite friendly to, but he does make alot of noises but never infront of me or anyone else, when he/she is alone then it starts making alot of noises he does also say hello but only when he is alone, can anyone tell me why please?
Thanks very much for the reply, well the parrot doesn't exactly talk infront of me yet but he does make alot of noises infront of me, the only thing he has said was his name infront of me wich is Samari, in the way i call him.
i'm not sure how true it is, but i've heard that parrots won't work very hard for your attention if they've already got it. if they don't they try to attract your attention by talking and stuff. makes sense though right? haha.
I enjoyed your video. It was simple but clear. I have a 4 month old Grey and love her and look forward to teaching her more. When did you start training her to talk.
Awesome video. My Indian Ringneck Raja is now five months old and he was given to me with his wings already clipped. The strange thing is they haven't grown back yet. I've had Raja for a few months now and I hope his wings aren't holding back his development too much. I know he will be able to talk as he picks up everything we do. If you show him something once he'll remember how to do it.
Also Tui is gorgeous. Where did you get her from? How much $AU?
I just came back to say that my baby lorikeet can say hello now and she also mutters something else and her wings are clipped. I think as long as you give them independence and lots of love, patience and encouragement they'll adapt and learn to talk in whatever situation.
i have a grey parrot and he is very scared of me, he goes to the corner of the cage when i come close to it, and i am also afraid it will chew my finger off if i try to bring him out of the cage
It probably doesnt feel safe with you because you are scared. Even if it bites you it better than having a pet that doesnt feel safe with you. It just has to get more used to you so he does not fell so insecure around you.
that question cannot be answered without knowing a lot more history about you and your bird. As a former breeder, I might be able to help you. Send me some more information and I might be able to give you some pointers...
A breeder will never make a good pet. She may never talk either. I'd sell her as a breeder. She could easily take a good chunk out of your finger. It's no wonder she is scared. Our breeders were very protective of their mate. You go into their room, feed them, and get out. Shame on whoever sold you this bird thinking it would make a pet... She will make a great breeder, she will never be a good pet.
I think what's made the difference in your case as well is that you have actual "mature" conversations infront of (and with) her instead of babytalking, which is what sooooo many people do.
my baby lorikeet has his wings clipped because I think it's more important for him to explore the outside world or grass, trees, bugs, air, noises, shops, parks, other birds, people and everything else out there, than being able to fly inside the house. I'm still going to teach him to talk- what r ur thoughts on my approach?
My theory, talk to your bird and interact with your bird like you would a young family member. Talk TO them and not AT them like so many CDs. My birds all talk appropriately for the situations at hand.
wtf are u talkin about when u said to not clip their wings?!?!? my african gray flew away twice and he's not even 8 months old... and he talks perfectly
I give the reason - to enhance brain growth! This is not to say a clipped bird will not learn, just that you may have better results from a full nurological development. Just as a point of interest, in Europe it is almost consider animal abuse to clip parrot wings. I make no judgements either way, Tui will be clipped when we are travelling in our RV, but might I suggest you close the windows and doors :)
i have to agree with you there i havent cliped my birds wings and shes only a year old and feels like shes got a dictionary in her cage sumwhere, she even says things i havent taught her lol it may also depend on your birds personality, i think it may also be the xbox i have when im online talkin lmao

Birds take a while to create a bond with people by now your bird is probably talking in front of you, if not you may need to spend more time with it.

also letting them fly is part of them gaining confidence.
without confindence their willingness to talk doesn't
develop properly.
that's one of my theories as well.
