i turned 21 quite recently and have heard of joni mitchell for a few years but never really remembered to take her seriously for some very stupid reason. Today for the first time I gave her a proper try. Blown away. My saving grace.. I 've been feeling this accumulating void of late, looking for some kind of elusive inspiration in my life and Miss Mitchell, she came by at the right time. God, am I so thankful for my procrastinating ways!! lol
It warms my heart to find young people enjoying the timeless music of a truly great talent, writer, and performer like Joni Mitchell...I loved her music from the moment I first heard Big Yellow Taxi and You Turn Me On I'm A Radio...and she gets better as time passes!
love this song...i just now figured out that joni has to be one of jewel's major influences. i detect a lot of similarity btwn this and jewel's first album pieces of you. after which jewel lost it by the way. i wish i was a teenager during this time, its hypnotic.
Photo should show her with her DULCIMER. This is not a guitar song.
You can tell she's nervous, as she's speeding up--all musicians do when we're adrenalized. Who wouldn't be at Carnegie Hall? Joni is beyond as a creator. Beyond.
@johnowensjr1234 --You've posted this elsewhere, and the answer remains the same: The consensus is that both are brilliant works by two brilliant artists. Why can't you just leave it at that? Artistry ain't a competition, dude.
it's not that taylor can or can't sound like joni mitchell. it's more about our culture prizing "skinny" youth, rather than actual talent and ingenuity. More, More, More, Faster, Cheaper, Younger, Better.
That's an unfair thing to say: Taylor ain't no soprano; not that I am saying that she is better then Joni: in my opinion she is not-not even close to close.
Joni's songs have enthralled 3 generations of ladies in our family. From my mum (61), to me (39)and now on to my daughter (9) who on hearing 'Blue' said 'Mummy, she's so beautiful with a voice like an angel'.... From the mouths of babes eh?
Music is a friend, especially Joni's music. there is something so feminine and true about it. she writes these lyrics that make you think, "omg, I have felt that exact same thing". We identify, plus she makes it soooo beautiful.
Joni Mitchell's fans all feel the same. I'm almost 60 and I listen to her all the time and have been the majority of my life. We all keep good company, don't we?
I'm barely 23, and sometimes I feel alone because I love Joni Mitchell and grew up with her and CSN & Y and Bob Dylan and the Moody Blues, and not to mention the Beatles which my mother managed to pass Beatlemania on to me. My point is that there seem to be very few of my generation that truly appreciates these wonderful musicians.
@hanbanxxx I share your feelings. I'm 25 and I love Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, the Beatles... and the list goes on and on. :)
I don't think you're too alone. I've heard a lot of people in their 20's to 30's that enjoy the music of the Moodys or CS&N or Joni. Their music really transcends the generations, IMO. Their songs tell stories that speak to your soul. But then again, I was your age and younger when I was going to their concerts and their music was the soundtrack to my life........
@jordanevolz, i understand exactly! thanks for being the small part of our generation who actually do appreciate artists like Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
@jordanevolz Uhh How about every day for me. I am 15 and it is like speaking to rocks when I try and get freinds to give Joni a try. For the past year I have had an OBSESSION, like all her albums (especially Blue), and yet now teenagers cant understand it?!?
@jordanevolz I'm 20 and go through the same thing on almost a daily basis. Just stay the course and you'll find another person to share this sort of musical love. In fact, spread the love by playing this greatness when your friends are over. You'd be surprised of the great reception.
@jordanevolz I'm 16 and i feel the same, i've loved all the folk musicians like joni mitchell, neil young, bob dylan, leonard cohen, janis joplin, the beatles since i was 12, u can imagine how hard it is to survive without a black eye these days with a list of favorite musicians like that, but someday people will wake up and realise what's right and what's wrong, and hopefully with that they'll re-adopt this kind of music into our lifestyles, we can only hope :) - Josh Sigurdson
I am COMPLETELY with you on this. If I could travel into the past and spend time with anyone , it would be Joni. And it's nice to see you mention The Beatles in the same paragraph - many people keep that American folk music scene so separate from everything else, but there was just so much great, original music being born everywhere, amidst a cultural revolution. Must've been amazing to be living in those times xx
@jordanevolz IF u weren't sad sometimes, u wouldn't get Joni anyway.... so enjoy the melancholy's blessing. And btw, I had the same problem 25 years ago...but now its tuesday afternoon (really!) I have 3 cats in the yard and its allright mama.
@jordanevolz Peer pressure has a lot to do with it, I am 45 and grew up in the 80's when music was equally crap, but I was lucky enough that all my mates where into PInk Flloyd, Genesis, which lead us on to Nick Drake, and John Martyn, and Joni, Michelle Shock, and the like of Santana. Some ppl will maybe get into this kind of music when they get older, but you can almost guarantee that whatever groups they do like the ppl in those groups are almost certainly listening to the like of Joni Etc
@yakacm Hi. Since you grew uo in the 80s, I'd like to ask if you know of any great albums similar to the likes of Joni's Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm? That very album came out in '88 and it just blew my mind away.
Not her best version, but one the most special songs ever.
I'm always doing singer/songwriter rankings in my head, something that's difficult only from #2 onward, because Joni is hands down always and forever number one.
Love the song! It's played at the end of season 3 of the L word, so many emotions in that episode! She has a beautiful voice, and I love the bit at the beginning when she laughs :)
I'm 16 and I wish more people my age appreciated this music as much as I do.

In one of her concerts, she came out after the break, after her "band set",and sat down with the dulcimer, playing this song.
You could hear the whole audience gasp when she began. She is amazing live, well - she is amazing anytime.
