I remember first hearing this poem and being amazed, and then I remember the few eyebrows I raised when I posted it to Facebook and memorized it in two days because my cousin thought I was "coming out". I'm straight. And I was completely dumbfounded as to why I couldn't enjoy a lesbian poet's piece of art without being considered gay myself. Hopefully this time around in my generation people will open up their minds. Rock on, Andrea.
Andrea Gibson is my favorite poet. The way she writes makes me want to sing, and cry. I can't help but choke up and clutch my chest because it's so beautiful nothing but tears can make it bearable.
WOW !! That was Beautiful and very moving.2 of my elderly aunts 91 & 89 Well One was a blood aunt of my husbands & the other was her best friend & roomate and business partner of 67 years!! 67 !! She was considered family. It was known in the family that they were lesbians but they NEVER felt they could make it known. That always saddened me. I can't imagine how hard that must have been to NEVER to be able to say I LOVE HER or kiss her or be able to be PROUD of what they had in front of others.
@HJManson I'm sure if she put on your mom's maybeline lipstick and got a long-haired wig, wore smth hollywood celebrities would, you'd consider her a lot more prettier. Too bad though, bc obviously she could care less. & although, I don't even feel the need to defend her on that area, I do feel the need to insult idiots like you. Since instead of listening to her poem, all you care about is how she looks (she looks very casual & handsome fyi.) & most lesbians are just gorgeous. so stfu or gtfo.
@HJManson your "mum"? think about your spelling before you call somebody else a cretin. Also, you should know better that when you insult people in a certain way, you will go get something firing back at you. And I didn't know that a youtube comment that brought up your mom's maybeline lipstick would ever "reduce you to tears" just because she has passed away. Also. I was in no way insulting your mom there, I was only insulting you. And yes I am content, because you are quite hilarious.

Wow... Just wow. She has a talent and is definitely not taking it for granted. Thank you, Andrea Gibson. The world needs you more than ever right now.
This is the first poem and performance I have seen of her; I am left with chills flowing up and down my bloodstream right now. Holy Shit. Andrea Gibson, you are beyond anything I've ever heard. A goddess with words, & Riveting.
Has a gay person ever demanded of YOU to give up rights? Has a gay person ever mistreated YOU? Has a gay person ever forced YOU to believe how YOU should live your private life?
Who are YOU to demand second class citizenship for OTHERS? Want to live in restricted ways? DO IT! Nobody is running YOUR life for you, so stop sticking your bigoted nose into what's none of YOUR business!
@multitalentino well i hate to burst your bubble but of course the answer to the top few questions are all no, but only because they never were a majority and given the choice to.
Compare YOUR righteousness with that of any compassionate, intelligent human being.
Compare YOUR character to that of anyone whose only "flaw" is NOT thinking with the same hateful and slefish mind.
You're in your own little world where nothing really matters, excpet your delusion of being "better" by virtue of your faith-based hatered for anyone who is "different".
@howmanycharacterscan WOW, aren't WEE original! How many times have you used THAT cliche since 7th grade? Or did you even get that far at your home school program?
Okay... crying... AGAIN... Andrea, you are truly amazing. Thank you for sharing such amazing talent with the world. Thank you. Thank you so much. I have no words.
I'm such a straight male you could plot points on me, but I wept when I heard Andrea Gibson perform "I Do" and all I could think of is what would I do if they didn't let me stay at my wife's side (32 years so far) in some cold hospital room twenty years from now? My heart aches. I don't know why so many of my favorite artists are "women who wear comfortable shoes" (Meshell Ndegeocello, Kaki King, Audre Lorde) but perhaps it's because they feel so powerful they transcend the bonds of gender.
It's been a year or so since I've heard this again.. and still, it's more powerful than the first time. Something about her just lingers with me, I always come back and listen to her poetry.
brilliant and so touching, Im a straight woman, but have lots of Gay friends and follow a few male gay singers, I think its so beautiful going to a gay pride event and seeing gay couples just being happy together, what harm are they doing anyone, no at all!

The point is, you having a different opinion doesn't give you (or anyone else) the right to violate what should be basic civil rights.
I saw Andrea perform this live in Sacramento a few months back, and every time the power of her words give me the power to be proud of who I am and the woman I love.

Everytime I hear this, I cry.
I think of the woman who had to die alone, because the hospital wouldn't let her partner and their children be with her when she died.
I wonder if I'll have to die alone one day, or if my wife will have to die alone one day, as a result of prejudice.
I wonder if, in our final hours, we will be treated with hate and prejudice, when all we wanted was to be treated with dignity and love.
