Hey Darren, I have a question about your looping method. I see you’re using session view to record your tracks, but when I try to do this, they all aren’t lining up with the other tracks do to my imperfect timing. My question is, do you have a way to preset your audio tracks to record to a set bar length, or is it all really careful timing?
love your stuff darren, everytime i check this out i like it even more. You been keeping my cup full o this inspiration juice since we were like 17 dude. Rock on my brother... don't u just love cl ices! :@)
with the LE versions, you can't import audio files from your computer in most cases... it's kinda shitty.. you're better off just deleting that and downloading the trial version from the website evrey 14 days, honestly.
I'm now using the FCB1010 too, it's great, but does take some setting up. As boring as it sounds I advise reading through all Ableton's documentation and tutorials, they will help you do pretty much anything. Make sure you get your head around the MIDI configuration of your FCB too, the manual for that is tricky but worthwhile figuring out. Good luck.
I have a good handle on Live as I have been producing on it for years now. What I find difficult is to also utilise the FCB 1010 for switching on and off effects in live as well. pedal real estate becomes expensive on the board.
However still wondering what those channels are to the right of your ableton abelton live screen.
I can't fully remember how I used this setup as I don't use it anymore. Basically the channels are duplicates of the instrument channels I use, these enable me to play instruments live over the top of record clips of that instrument, which isn't easily implementable through a single channel's monitoring. Keep experimenting with the FCB, some commands work differently ie for an FX on/off you might need to send 0 for off and 127 for on so you might use two pedals, there are ten banks though!
btw you can trigger entire rows or 'scenes' by mapping to the play buttons on the far right. This is how I trigger verse/chorus changes. This is covered in the manual!
Great performance! it's amazing how you can control everything with the pedals... I'm trying to do it with the behringer fcb1010 and Ableton Live but I just get very confuse with the warp/quantization options of ableton and everything I play results a kind of a mess.. any advice? launch clip options, quantization, warping...? Cheers
Hey thanks! the FCB was an option for me but too expensive... I use 1 bar global quantization and play and record everything to the click track in this piece. No need for warping for me, simply assign buttons to clip slots, bang to record, bang to play!
Alright! so that 1 bar quantization doesn't affect your groove with the cajon? I presumme you use the triguer launch mode on the clips?? You timing is fu..ing great Darren!
I don't use the groove settings in Ableton, well at least I don't alter them. With the 1 bar Q I can hit the buttons on the beats which makes it a little easier to keep in time, took a bit of practice though. I use the default launch mode on the clips, trigger I think? Thanks for the kind words, good luck! I'm writing more now which will be ready in the next couple of months and will be better! hehe
good stuff! working on my 'looper' setup currently but will be incorporating the turntables with guitar and softsynths along with Ableton. Out of cuiosity, what kind of lappy are you running in this video (specs)?
Macbook basic model 1.83GHz 1GB RAM 120GB HDD. I run this with a video output mirroring the display and it all still works nice and smoothly. I use either an M-Audiio 1814 or a MOTU 828MkII alongside it, decent audio interface is a necessity! Just upgraded to Leopard and Live 7 but haven't tested it yet...
Was (just) gonna ask about your interface as well! Thanks for the insight. I'll be sure to check out some of your other videos , feel free to check mine out as well! Peace.
Awesome and good to know, thanks for the insight! Been thinking about picking up the entry level mac mini with the same specs, definitley gonna look more into it now! Peace.
ive just started doing a similar project, using foot switches soldered to the circuit board of a usb keyboard. how did you make yours? also, did you need to put any delay on the tracks to get rid of latency problems? did you use junXion by any chance as well?
im making mine so there's 3 rows and seven columns. columns 1-6 are track recording, row 7 are whatever I decide, not sure. would be good if you could tell me a bit about your project as i am very interested!
Cooooool!

Thank you for posting this. Is there any way you could post your Live Set online? Would save me a lot of time trying to recreate it!

@jtwayne I wish my timing was that good, look at global quantization, pg 202 of the live 8 manual, D.

In this vid it's an M-Audio 1814, other times I use a MOTU 828 mk2. The desk is a Soundcraft 328 XD, a very old digital mixing desk :)

Thats the first time i have seen its even possible to use a computer on the fly like this. What midi pedal is being used here I wonder.
ccaumack 2 years ago
its a custom built pedal. Check his info for a link to learn more.

man gr8 stuff i wish i could figure out the fcb 1010 i`m having the toughest time trying to trigger record on a track....but gr8 stuff dude..
DjKuttack1 2 years ago
Use FCB midi note function instead of CC functions. Its much easier to get it going with Note data. CC functions are more complex to program.

and what about the ableton live setup?
how are you moving manouevering within live to record your verse chorus scenarios?
I am using an FCB 1010 and am trying to think out the best form of midi controling.
Also check out a guy called David Ford on youtube, he is up to some similar stuff although I believe it's with a Boss multi sample pedal.
cheers and keep up the great work :)

Interesting secuence...
so, to start playing, recording and stoping automatically you only map the chanels to a midi controller?.. .
neu9 3 years ago
This piece uses a keystroke foot controller mapped to each cell or clip slot of each instrument's channel.
darrencperry 3 years ago
i absolutely love this, how do you set up the midi mappings to begin a new loop each time? for some reason i cant get it
iocguitarist 3 years ago
Map one button to one cell. On first press it records, on second press it plays back...

How do you build that controller you're stomping on? I'm assuming you built it anyway, it looks home-made. Cool song, I like the textures.

how do i arm multiple tracks for recording?
twistandshout69 4 years ago
Either choose the option in Live's preferences or hold the apple key while selecting (on a mac) probably shift or ctrl on a pc.
