Afrer the book, it was turned into a a stage musical in 1902 in Chicago and then NY in 1903. The costumes were so beautiful. They were similar to these costumes. the NYPL digital library has a lot of the photos if you want to see them. Also, some people say that there is no real proof that this is Bebe Daniels. Google books is an excellent site to read about the history of movie making as you can look up books and magazines from the era.
Wow where did you find this. Interesting piece od Hollywood history. Adding to further comments...the 1939 film is actually much different from the book. The end of the film is actually only about 2/3 of the way in the book. After the wizard flies off in the balloon, Dorothy actually must travel to find the Witch of the South (good sister to the Witch of the North) and she actually teaches Dorothy the power of the shoes.
OMG, I cant believe that they would show this to people and expect them to like it!! yeah ok they werent able to do the stuff we do to day but they could have better, i thougt the scarecrow was in OZ not in Kansas and scince when did the cows walk on their hindlegs? also, wasnt dorothy in her house when she was blow to OZ?
Don't forget it's possible MGM changed the story line about having Scarecrow in OZ. I've never read the book by Baum, but it's possible. Known to happen with other novels.
There was more then just, The Wizard of Oz. The original books were a whole series of adventures with Dorothy. The famous film of 1939 with Judy Garland, was just one part of those stories.
A look back and fun to compare with the masterpiece 39 version. I thought the cyclone was very funny. Also they do not use that term in the Western Hemisphere. Here of course we call them tornados.
While I haven't actually READ the Land of Oz from which Mombi is derived, I read the Marvel Comics' adaptation. Apparently Mombi was a fellow witch, acquaintance of the Wizard who was given the Princess Ozma but was never to harm her. She turned her into a boy and retained custody in raising him. Probably a different character from Momba. But wow, what a hard show to follow. I have a renewed appreciation for soundtracks.
There's three sad souls, oh me oh my No brain, no heart, he's much to shy But never mind you three There's the Wizard as you can see He'll fix that, one-two-three In a funny place called the World of Oz Oh the World of Oz is a very funny place Where everyone wears a funny funny face All the streets are paved with gold And no one ever grows old In that funny land, lives the Wizard of Oz.
all i can say is this deffinately puts a different light on the idea that was Oz, seeing people play it out this way... I almost feel like Im watching the cave men draw on the walls of caves, lol. I was almost concerned what they meant to do with Dorothy and whatever that "cow" was doing to that haystack, LOL. Painted back drop was pretty cool, almost looks like real clouds, so you know they really tried. i think its fun :) art is abstract, as it should be.
Is Momba the name of the Wicked Witch of the West? I don't really get into all the politics of Oz, and as far as I know, MOMBI was the name of the witch in Return to Oz.
While I cannot agree with you, I understand where you are coming from. It is played so much, and most known of all Oz works, that it gets annoying to think of Oz and only hear "We're off to see the Wizard"
Wow, OVER 100 years ago.

Do you know anything about how moviemaking techniques were in 1910, or what people's expectations were back then?

A very good demonstration of the evolution of movie making. Did you notice the camera just sits in one place as though filming a play?

Yeah, and there was no CGI either.

Those trees' faces around 4:17 are creeping me out.

Interesting.
The tin man, lion and scarecrow actually look as good as in the later movie. The other animals are pretty odd though.

Giant Toto is kinda weird too. But I agree that the rest of the main characters really don't look bad!
Mrbonedaddy 3 years ago
The animals are rather disturbing... especially the donkey. Thay kinda give me the creeps.

That is how the book goes, so Marvel did a good job staying faithful as far as I have heard
danielchance 3 years ago
I'm not sure who you were replying to, but this film houses very little from the first book.

I was replying to the person who was talking about Mombi, and the Marvel comics adaption to one of the stories... sorry for the mix up

Giant toto appears later when Glinda turns him into a giant dog in order to protect Dorothy from the Cowardly Lion.
