Travis didn't take Alex to Silent Hill per say, he took him to his hometown which is Sheperd's Glen. I'm guessing that it's still quite some distance from Silent Hill itself, probably why Travis was willing to hitch him a ride, or perhaps he didn't even know that Shepard's Glen was anywhere near Silent Hill. I suppose it could be up to speculation on his reasons.

This first scene is significant. You see the medic is actually Adam Shepherd. Room 206 is closed because Adam couldn't kill Alex. Next room is Fitch scalping Scarlet. Third room is Judge Holloway strangulating Nora. Next guy is the mayor who throws Joey in a grave. And then Adam is killed by PH just like he would in the real game later on.
