I'm sry no matter how hard I try,I can never stop having a boner when I watch this. But this isn't right. grendels mother isn't supposed to look like some hot, naked, horny Angelina Jolie...she's supposed to look like an ugly octopus fag-bag monster. :P
Wait... in the poems, doesn't he have to go underwater and fight her and kill her? I know this is a movie, so it doesn't at all have to be the slightest bit related to the poems... but this movie will mislead people who are too lazy to read... oh well, that's what they get I guess.
Honestly, people. It's Hollywood. Hollywood tweaks original tales to make their fims different and unique from others using the same story. I think we all know Grendel's mother is suppose to be an ugly demon/witch. But who would have children with that? So in this version, she changes her appearance to seduce men. Get over it and either watch the movie, or don't.
can someone tell me whats the story of angelina's role in this film? did she died? did beowulf really gave her a son? did beowulf and angelina fight in this film? i wanna know... just the story of grendel's mother...
I'm glad I didn't waste money to see this bullshit. What the fuck?!? Grendel's mother is suppose to be a demonic, monstrous creature from hell. The spawn of Cain, and they make her a sexy seductress? What the hell kind of shit is that? I understand poetic license, but the least they could have done is kept Angelina Jolie as Whelthow and not as Grendel's mother. That's so freaking stupid. This is not at all what I read. I was expected a great fight, not a damn near sex scene.
@majickalproductions For one you spelled "queer" wrong. Why am I a queer because I'm upset at the fact that they compared a demonic monster to Angelina Jolie. I understand that she's naked. Yeah, it's a great (seen better on Megan Good and Porntube), but it's not the story. I really wanted to know how they would depict Grendel's Mother. How they would betray her, and I wanted to see how amazing would the fight scene be. Instead they took a wonderful book and turned it into trash. Hollywood.
@MDNR09 actually the movie really was really entertaining. but i guess that's one man's opinion. say what you want but i loved it. sorry about the whole quire-queer thing. kinda ill that day.
Solution simple - before the viking goes in to kill Grendel's mother, get him to chop his own dick off so he wouldn't be tempted. Even if he fell in his lust, he won't be able to go all the way with Grendel's mother. Then it is merely the problem of butchering the thing.
The Dragon was summoned by Merlin the Wizard in the movie Excalibur--to do the evil deed of having a child in adultery with the queen, that begot King Arthur, dragon help was summoned. Wizards are those people who seem to know more about nature and society, and are portrayed as magical, the future wizards of science are the Jedi Knights. Dragons are neither good nor evil, but do represent the opposition that can be deadly; if it is personally good, then maybe an Angel who are declared holy.
I see some people claim Dragon's are not sexy vixens; but this is untrue; the face of the Dragon is anything relevant, Beowulf was tempted: An enemy tank is a dragon, a police car after you is a dragon, a law of society in a practice of cruelty is a dragon, being left to the elements of nature without society protection is a dragon, to be outcast is to face society itself as a dragon (Christian legends gives the human aspect to harpies, old gossip women who are witches to you, you are cursed).
Here the Dragon played by Angelina Jolie, represents the trouble of Beowulf, that is the wickedness of society and nature--the mother of trouble of society itself. Grendel is the physical manifestations of trouble (enemies, criminals, cruelty, corruption, wickedness), and you will find finally Beowulf becomes his own law and enchain Grendel and beheads him--this is Rule of Man, not Rule of Law, by Beowulf's word he is his own Lord. The ancient story is allegory and a lesson of leadership.
The Dragon is a monster, but is a creature of many talents; when you understand the mythology, then you will realize the Dragon represents opposition, trouble from both society and nature: The Dragon represents the cruel nature of Mankind and the elements of creation--it cannot be destroyed, but it can be banished, for a short while, for all you did was change its location and perception. I saw this on tv the other day, partly because I was bored, partly because I was curious. I hated the 3d playstation look on the human characters, but mostly I thought it was a piece of nothingness, very stupid.
I wouldn't say that this adaptation is all out TERRIBLE. I've seen alot of Beowulf movies and they all take some liberties. Beowulf and Grendel, Beowulf 1999, Grendel Grendel Grendel, and the SyFy movie all make massive changes. This at least tried to work on it's own kinda like Frankenstein or Dracula for example. I'm working on an accurate script myself to turn in someday, but I don't hate this. I reccomend the Benjamin Bagby Beowulf or 1998 animated movie for an accurate version.
WTF? angelina jolie as grendal's mother? and what's with the whole seducing crap? she's suppose to be an ugly demon, not a golden pornographic seductress. SICK. and to think i almost wasted 8 bucks to see this crap. i'm glad i didn't see this movie.
@xXKittyxCat To be fair, she's a shapeshifter. When Grendel dies, you can see her true face in the water, she's actually a lot less human looking than he is. I think the writers were inspired by the Greek legend of Echidna the Mother of all Monsters (the Norse had a similar legend). Weirdly, her seduction of Beowulf makes his fight with the Dragon far more powerful- we know the Dragon has a mother who loves him, he's fighting to avenge his brother and Beowulf will be forced to kill his only son.
You idiotic twit - THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF THE MOVIE!! This is a darker interpretation of Beowulf's story - the poem writes him off as a flawless nearly invincible hero who beat 2 monsters in his youth and still be able to fight a dragon at old age. The movie portrayed him as a tragic hero - strong maybe, but still have human flaws. He by falling into temptation and then lying about it created his own doom. That's why he begged his friend to write him off as a man, not a hero
@TheVoiceOfReason93 Isn't that killing the history and power of Beowolf. Shouldn't they tell the story as is OR come up with their own story and not touch a classic. This is just me but Beowolf was made in a time when people needed a HERO. He was made king BECAUSE he was a hero not a man.
@TheVoiceOfReason93 Isn't that killing the history and power of Beowolf? Shouldn't they tell the story as is OR come up with their own story and not touch a classic. This is just me but Beowolf was made in a time when people needed a HERO. He was made king BECAUSE he was a hero not a man.
It's hard to believe to this day how simplistic people are - the original script was written by Neil fucking Gaiman for fuck sake! This movie was a good opportunity to reveal to us about our humanity - our own flaws and weaknesses - as well as deconstructing what it means to be a hero. And all you fucking brag about is "where's the mother fight?"? Were you expecting a mindless 115 min superhero bash-fest?! How fucking stupid are you?!
If Beowulf was made EXACTLY in line with the original story then it would be nothing but a 115 minute brainless bash-fest, probably edited a bit with a happier ending. Such low-grade film wouldn't be just disrespecting Beowulf as a classic, it would disrespect the maturity of the modern audience (and among many others, Neil Gaiman, who wrote the script) and literature as a whole.
Absolutely stupid. I mean, i aren't a literature professor or anything, and even i can see that through. If you prefer the poem, go ahead, but before you start criticizing another work try watching / read about it first, like i did! I read the fucking script by Neil Gaiman himself, its online, dumbass!
PS: And yes, I am that passionate, but at least I am not as bad as those idiots who kept arguing over whether subbing or dubbing of Japanese Animes is better.
@TheVoiceOfReason93 And yes what? Which one are you replying back to? and 1: it's the show you're watching p; Like some of the voice actors are really good and others don't fit the face. Plus some of the meaning is lost. Like jokes don't make sence and whatnot. 2: That has nothing to do with this! Beowolf was a real person and his story was told to show children that if you do good, good will happen. Not sleep with a hag and a then die.
@xXKittyxCat You're dead on ^^ Myself not a fan of angelina jolie but that's not here nor there. What I don't like about this movie is it didn't pay respect to beowolf or his story. I think if you have to kill others works then you're a bad writer. Beowolf was/is a hero and he become a hero from being honest and brave. He become king because he hold these truths to his heart! and anyone who says he was a man not a hero is a moron who could never be anything but a moron!
He has to be a flawed character if we are to adapt Beowulf to the modern age audience. We all know that nobody can be that noble and honorable as portrayed him in the past. I mean, even superheroes from comics and movies today are portrayed as far more gritty and conflicted then the straightforward and noble versions back then. Beowulf is a hero because people BELIEVE HE WAS just because he bashed monsters. This film shows that deep down, no, he's not.
According to the legend (an VIII century anglo-saxon one, but with evident nordic inspirations) Grendel's mother was "an enormous, monstrous witch woman, living in the depths of a dark marsh" the farest you can get from a sexy lady (assuming a woman could be sexy with those ridicuolous lifeboat inflated lips).
@frootloopsfan She was never geven a physical description but I do recall it was said she was a beast in the actual poem (that is what Beowulf started out as was a poem) and was not in a humanoid form.
Actually i am reading the story, i don't know about the book thing since i don't own it but in the REAL book version as written in the Anglo-Saxon era She is just a Big Nasty Monster Like Lady. It didn't say she was a Dragon, there is a Dragon though, but thats after she died so yeah.
I still like the old real version of Beowulf but i gotta say this one was more interesting and much more intriguing. Plus i do believe that all the director does is direct the movie but not write the script, thats why there are Script writers, or Play writers.
Oh my gosh, can you not see it? This is exactly how Angelina got Brad. She trapped him into her lair, and all she wanted was to be impregnated. Brad fell for it, since she probably melted his "sword" as well, and Jennifer A "the queen" is waiting back at the village, with suspicions that he has been with "her" which he lies about.
I love this movie and its interpretation of Beowulf--because it makes the story more believeable and the hero into a living, breathing, falliable man. In the poem, we are told that Beowulf attacks Grendel's mother with the sword Hrunting but it fails him. But in the nick of time he spies an even more badass sword and kills her with it. Then he beheads the corpse of Grendel (who had returned to his mother's lair to die) and brings it back as a trophy. But doesn't that story seem odd somehow?
He already had taken Grendel's claw; why didn't he take the mother's head instead? This movie provides an interesting answer--Beowulf lied about what happened! Instead of killing her, he was seduced by her (just like Hrothgar), and became the father of the monster that ended his life years later. When he faces this last foe, he is forced to confront (and defeat) the consequences of his moment of weakness.
Thus Beowulf is transformed from an epic about a two dimensional hero who saves kindgoms from monsters, into a tale of redemption for a man who is strong and heroic but still a human being.
Beowulf is no hero in my opinion. He is a weak and useless person. He defeated Grendel, but did not have the will to do what is necessary to Grendel's mother, and thus left a curse upon the land for lord know how long in the movie. I have this version of Beowulf.
I did, in high school my senior year. I like him in the book better because he maybe a little power hungry, but he is still a bit of a hero, then this faggot.
this one isnt accurate to the poem at all. i dont know of any other films.its difficult to follow the poem, most of the poem relies on the listeners imagination to depict the scene as its passed on through word of mouth, thats why its hard for directors to capture such an amazing poem into film. the only similarities to the poem in this is theres a guy called Beowulf who kills Grendel, then kills Grendels mother
Actually you are wrong. There are dozens of version sof the poem and there is no one 'true' version as it was a story that originated before written records were established. This movie version fits one version of the poem exactly.
You're wrong, actually. There is a 'true' version of the poem, written by an unknown author and copied by two scribes. It's written in Old English and has been translated numerous times. :)
yeah she is way more powerful than Grendel, I've never seen this movie but in the story, The Mother easily overcomes Beowulf, but he manages to beat somehow, i forgot
Well, in the epic poem, he actually uses Hrunting, but it's completely useless. What happens is that the Mother takes him through the ocean back to her cave, and she's got all sorts of human memorabilia in there, including Wieland's Sword - a blade that can actually harm her. Beowulf grabs that blade and slaughters her. Here, though, in all honesty, I can't see how he would have won, even with that blade.
It's anti-woman literature. There are two female characters worth noting, one is merely a daughter and the other is a monster. She can easily overcome him, but he still manages to kill her. I suppose the story speaks for the values of the times.
actually, during the anglo-saxon era wich is approxiamtely around the time beowulf was told(700-750) the anglo-saxons, didn't consider their women inferior at all. they were a culture that treated them fairly. women could own land, do with it whatever they pleased as well as join religious communities and become powerful abbesses. true no woman besides grendel's mother is mentioned, but the epic poem is supposed to focus more on beowulf rather than on the women.
we are reading this book in class and he strangles her right away they dont kiss

without seeing movie, l say: this is mother of lizard-like monster???
ivan55599 2 years ago
Grendel isn't a "lizard-like monster" he is actually just a monster, who is part human part monster.
KrAzEyOvAeDwArD4eVa 2 years ago 6
jah, after searching little info. but there was some dragonic like moster in some book
ivan55599 2 years ago
Actually i am reading the story, i don't know about the book thing since i don't own it but in the REAL book version as written in the Anglo-Saxon era She is just a Big Nasty Monster Like Lady. It didn't say she was a Dragon, there is a Dragon though, but thats after she died so yeah.

... did the director even READ Beowulf?!

THANK YOU MAN! they completely fucked every bit up. hollywood needs to just go die haha
wo48evans 2 years ago 2
haha, i know right?
I still like the old real version of Beowulf but i gotta say this one was more interesting and much more intriguing. Plus i do believe that all the director does is direct the movie but not write the script, thats why there are Script writers, or Play writers.

Gosh this version of the movie is so off.....I'm glad I didn't go see it
dncrartist 2 years ago 8

FurryPurryKee 2 years ago 7
He already had taken Grendel's claw; why didn't he take the mother's head instead? This movie provides an interesting answer--Beowulf lied about what happened! Instead of killing her, he was seduced by her (just like Hrothgar), and became the father of the monster that ended his life years later. When he faces this last foe, he is forced to confront (and defeat) the consequences of his moment of weakness.

Thus Beowulf is transformed from an epic about a two dimensional hero who saves kindgoms from monsters, into a tale of redemption for a man who is strong and heroic but still a human being.
FurryPurryKee 2 years ago 5
Beowulf is no hero in my opinion. He is a weak and useless person. He defeated Grendel, but did not have the will to do what is necessary to Grendel's mother, and thus left a curse upon the land for lord know how long in the movie. I have this version of Beowulf.

read the actual book before you judge him cause the movies all are inaccurate
superAZNrescuer 2 years ago 6
I did, in high school my senior year. I like him in the book better because he maybe a little power hungry, but he is still a bit of a hero, then this faggot.

Beowulf is supposed to find an epic sword and destroy the mother, then behead the corpse.

this one isnt accurate to the poem at all. i dont know of any other films.its difficult to follow the poem, most of the poem relies on the listeners imagination to depict the scene as its passed on through word of mouth, thats why its hard for directors to capture such an amazing poem into film. the only similarities to the poem in this is theres a guy called Beowulf who kills Grendel, then kills Grendels mother
BrotherHugo500 3 years ago
Actually you are wrong. There are dozens of version sof the poem and there is no one 'true' version as it was a story that originated before written records were established. This movie version fits one version of the poem exactly.
notabook 3 years ago 3
You're wrong, actually. There is a 'true' version of the poem, written by an unknown author and copied by two scribes. It's written in Old English and has been translated numerous times. :)

...this is a VERY confusing movie...
JamesOhGoodie 3 years ago 4
I don't understand with the numerous remakes of Beowulf, why NO ONE can make it remotely similar to the actual poem.
z3br4hh 3 years ago 8
Did she dissolve the sword? One wonders exactly how his duel with her would have gone - she seems to be more powerful than Grendel.
Mystrohan 4 years ago 5
yeah she is way more powerful than Grendel, I've never seen this movie but in the story, The Mother easily overcomes Beowulf, but he manages to beat somehow, i forgot
PirateGibson 3 years ago 2
Well, in the epic poem, he actually uses Hrunting, but it's completely useless. What happens is that the Mother takes him through the ocean back to her cave, and she's got all sorts of human memorabilia in there, including Wieland's Sword - a blade that can actually harm her. Beowulf grabs that blade and slaughters her. Here, though, in all honesty, I can't see how he would have won, even with that blade.
Mystrohan 3 years ago 3
yeah your right
PirateGibson 3 years ago
It's anti-woman literature. There are two female characters worth noting, one is merely a daughter and the other is a monster. She can easily overcome him, but he still manages to kill her. I suppose the story speaks for the values of the times.
ShamusMacGuffin 3 years ago 2
actually, during the anglo-saxon era wich is approxiamtely around the time beowulf was told(700-750) the anglo-saxons, didn't consider their women inferior at all. they were a culture that treated them fairly. women could own land, do with it whatever they pleased as well as join religious communities and become powerful abbesses. true no woman besides grendel's mother is mentioned, but the epic poem is supposed to focus more on beowulf rather than on the women.
