If you look at various videos of Caterham R300's and R500's you can determine this very quickly. No BMW has that little body roll or a 4 cylinder engine that sounds like that. M Coupes have body roll, this car has essentially zero. M Coupes do not have this kind of handling or sound, period.

I too, have an engineering degree and it doesn't tell you ANYTHING about how to distinguish between 4 and 6 cylinder engines by the sound alone.

Judging by the way the transmission is shifting and the sound of the engine, I'm guessing it's something like a Caterham R500 or Radical of some sort being short shifted (ie - not redlined). It is shifting almost as quickly as a sequential gearbox, it sounds like a bike engine and transmission to me. No BMW street car transmission shifts like that.
No, it's because they weren't driving a car equipped with a 6 cylinder engine (ie - it's NOT a BMW). Notice the COMPLETE absence of body roll, oversteer or understeer (It isn't even at its limit here) while the Impreza is losing traction a lot. Notice the extremely good braking ability, high-revving 4 cylinder engine and the extreme quickness with which the revs drop and rise between shifts. It's something like a Caterham or Radical. M Coupes do not sound like that or drive like that.

Uh, rb320 0-60 = 4.8 z4m 0-60 = 5.0. So IMPREZA IS FASTER, plus more traction round corners as its 4wd. The Z4M has a poor chassis (any car expert knows this) and is a wollowy posers car, not a hard core JDM track attack car like the rb320!! Besides its not a z4m following, it sounds like a caterham or something!!

Correct: the chase car is a Caterham and the circuit used for the video is Knockhill.
The chase car is NOT a BMW: the original video along with the associated feature ("Road and Track 2007") can be found on the Evo car magazine website.

I remember reading the article when they did this and I was sure that it was done at Knockhill: I just checked the Evo site though and they say Cadwell Park, so good spot!

I don't think a time of 8:15 for the roadster and 8:10 for the coupe on the nurburgring is a car w/ a poseur chassis??? ever check what the last time the STI tracked? RB320 is a great car but that doesn't make me say the Z4m is a poseur car.

Not convinced. It sounds nothing like a boxer engine. If it is the subaru we hear, then the sound is well out of sync. It sounds like the camera car backs off after the subaru hits the brakes. The camera car "goes light" over that crest at about 2.09 and you can hear the revs rise.
