@audioproducer88 im not sure if you are serious or not. Thats a pretty good demo. Its the next one that is going to cause a stir. That demo shows sounds like the bells and bass that people know a DX7 can do. The next one has the DX7 sounding very close to a Roland TR808 plus a bass patch fatter than the weather girls. And other sounds that will make alot of people realize FM synthesis was never fully uncovered even by the pro programmers.
@audioproducer to the superficial musicians maybe. To those in the know never. The Mark 2 DX7 has more power and shine. Check my demos out throught the year and this will become apparent. Starting with DX7 changes into a Roland TR808 coming in the next 10 days. I have totally mastered FM synthesis and uncovered its true power. Forget what you think you know about the DX7. I am about to surprise alot of people.
Amazing sounds! I also saw a demo from the RetroSynth page of a Roland D-550 Linear Synth rack module! I would love to hear some ambient music made by these!
Well if you can fetch almost €4000 for a JP-8 somebody strapped for cash might decide to sell it. Especially if you can have a lot of good sounding synths for that amount of money plus some pocketchange. Also somebody mentioned a DX-7 being difficult to program. This is a misconception, you can get very simple analog style sound using just two operators. The problem for most people is they don't understand the underlying synthesis principle so they don't know where to start.
If you own a D-50 and want to sell it, come to Chile and sell it here. You'll get people wanting to pay over $1.000 for this synth, because they heard this synth is the only one having "the original cumbia sound". I don't agree, but it's good advice for any D-50 owner.
@thelurker25 That's exactly what I was thinking. But the same applies to any synth. Consider the Jupiter 8 too. If it's the ultimate analog, then why is it resold so many times? Because eventually most keyboardists become tired of the same old sounds.
@TomZentra that is an nonsensical explanation. The whole reason why certain people are selling the JP-8 is clearly to gain an outrageous profit and has little to do with the owner and the synth sounds it makes.
@thelurker25 Your explanation is a nonsensical explanation. There have been NO low cost JP-8 synths to be found for years. Their price reached a barrier over a year ago. If you think that you can buy a a JP-8 and sell it for a few thousand dollars profit, you're living in the past. Check eBay sales. The prices are NOT going any higher and JP-8's stay listed for weeks or months until they are sold - often with a compromised price.

Fantastic synth-- evocative playing... hey, can you remember the names of any of those patches? That would help us track down the sounds in case they are available somewhere. Thank you!
Great demo of an awesome synth. Does anyone know of any websites that tell you how to program different patches for the D-50? I'm surprised they're not more common.
@iskandarmuradov ebay or other online places however they usually go for quite a high price however it's worth every penny. I would never part with my D-50. I recommend you get one before they become to rare to find my friend.
got mine in the shop for servicing. the d50 is a synth i owned before and sold. i just got another one because i found myself wanting it back shortly after i sold it. theres software synths and samples of this machine but it just isnt the same as the real thing. is the filter in this beast analog or digital.
@stalag3333 It's all digital, no analog filter. Roland just did a great job of making it sound very warm, and the way it makes sounds (in structure mode 1 or 2 pure synth no PCM) is akin to virtual analog anyway. That's why D-50 sounds so alive for digital! One of the best synths ever made. I have one in near mint condition.
@realityfakers thanks. yeah it is a very nice synth. its sitting under another great digital right now the sy77 and the two together make for some great possibilities.
Hey, does this keyboard have a sequencer where you can like make a drum beat and have that playing in the background with a riff while you play another part? thanx.
Hey, great video! I'm thinking of getting this synth in a few months, but I have one question. I think it does but I can't be sure, does this synth have a floppy drive? I wouldn't normally ask, but google just brings me to a load of useless pages..
Stand back and don't get caught up in what you are hearing. You may notice every patch sounds the same. Yes different shapes, but the samness of sound is always present. Still, better than most digitals. Stack some analogs together for the multi aspect thing and you will be surrounded by living three dimensional sound. It won't have that cold dark sameness.
I love the sound of this thing. I was very close to buying one a few months ago, but I think I need a lot more practice before moving to the more advanced synth programming.
I currently only have a Novation Remote 61 hooked up to FL Studio, so I can play around with all the VST synths.
btw, if you add &fmt=18 to the URL, you get much better quality stereo sound from this video (works on many others).
I gotta get one of these! I have a DX7II which is good for the famous 80's EP sound, but the D-50 had so many other sounds that were less metalic like the Yamaha DXs and the Korg DS8 synths were.
Can anyone please tell me how to upload voices from your laptop onto the D-50. I got some ethnic voices that I need to upload. Any suggestions anyone?
I think you've got some SYSEX file. So play back them on the D-50, with a MIDI cable connected. Maybe you must enter some editing mode etc., the d-50 tech manual is available in PDF on the roland website.

Guys please do not ask about these patches ,i don't have this Synth anymore since early 2008. They were on a D50 i bought many years ago and i have no clue to be honest if they are presets but i think the original owner did these ,they were amazing....

I just bought one of these for 250$ at my local pawn shop, one of the keys is kinda broke but other than that it should work good? I haven't had a chance cuz I need to order a new ac cord. Hopefully it has alot of these tripped out sounds on it already cuz thats sort of the vibe that im going for. If not, where can I find some?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm not trying to be a dick, but why do you people that dont know what a certain piece of gear is/can do buy it when there are ppl like ME out there that are looking for this shit?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There's no reason to be jealous, but whatever man. I've also bought some great records just by looking at the front cover. Maybe that makes me a poser, but I could give a fuck. I just happened to get lucky and if you don't think I know what i'm doing step to me on the turntables and I can show you whats up.
The Roland D-series synths are certainly NOT the type of synths that you just pick up and buy. Programming the synth is not at all user-friendly and the manual is such a poor translation that it's no help. If you don't know what you're doing with this synth, you won't be able to do much more than bang away on the presets, most of which suck.
I mean, you could have spent that $250 on a used Micron or some other synth that sounds awesome and is easy to use right out of the box.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
that's a good opinion, I'm having a great time "bangin" away on the presets and I prefer a challenge. Speaking of banging, I had a great time with your mom last night :)
Wow, how do I respond to such an intelligent argument? I'm not sure.
I suppose I should rephrase my wording: if you like the presets, then great. However, I don't care for most of them (they sound like crappy '80s music), The fact is that if you want to go beyond them, you're going to need to spend a lot of time figuring out how to use it. It can be pretty frustrating if you don't know what you're doing.
Have fun with the "bangin", I'm sure my mom appreciates getting laid in her old age.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you're right, that was a little immature but I'm tired of people hating cuz I found something they have been wanting. It isn't that critical, have a nice day...
Can anyone recommend a new keyboard/work station that can play these sounds. I know you would never get exactly but what would be a modern version of this? many thanks
The Roland V-Synth XT is a rack module synth with alot of diferent synthesizers including the D50. If you like table keyb you can buy the Roland v-synth GT and you can add the D50 card on it, the XT bring built in the D50.
only problem is you can get a D-50 and most of the other synths that the V-Synth emulates for half the price it costs to buy a V-Synth. Sure you have the reliability and small package of the V-Synth, but you also lose analog distortion and other various factors of having the originals. not to mention the full on controls. i love the V-synth but it's WAY over priced for most musicians these days.
V-Synth GT is not capable of adding d-50 in at all. There's no card slot, i heard Roland tried to make it part of the OS but it kept crashing the synth, so they left it out,bad idea. Best bang for the buck a used V-Synth v2with the D-50 card, i have seen these sell for as little as $650.00. The card is not just a D50, it contains all the sounds from Rolands PCM card series plus 28 additional waveforms not present in the original.
BEATIFUL patches! I got one used and the presets were mostly emulations of polysynths and brass sounds. And well played too. I wish I was as good with my D-50.
I miss the D-50 all of a sudden, I've had two or three over the years; even the V-synth with the D-50 card. It all gets back to me, even though I did the D-50 Refill for Reason (yes, I am Patrick Fridh)... I need a D again!
does anyone know if theres a pc version of this legendary black monster ? i love it because i think it has a sound that im looking for ,the (shakuhachi)inmortalized by enigma.
the sound your referring to is the pizzacoto strings. Its a stock preset.Record the midi of your performance, send me the data and i'll record it using that preset and send it back for $5.
I just found a D50 for 100€ w/case at a junk shop minutes ago and secured it with a 5€ deposit as I don't have the other 95 right now. I knew I was going to find something great for dirt cheap, but I wanted to search for demos on the 'Tube to hear what it can really do...and I stumbled upon your video! WOW! GREAT TONES! Are these all factory presets or can I download them somewhere?
Depends on what circle your're in. These huge ambient sounds seem to fall out of it almost, but this is a drawback if you're with a band and you JUST need a frikkin organ or piano sound. Otherwise, it's an awesome sounding board.
The patch at 2:53 is called "Wheather Fax"?I just picked up a perfect condition D50 dirt cheap, and that same patch just happens to be in it i know it's not a preset, i think it's a Vahala sound.Try holding a sustaining chord with your left hand, and play a staccato string line with your right, you can hear the tone "Brightfifth" being used.I now have a Roland JD800,JX10,D50.
Hi, nice sounds. I have just been given a D50,D70 and Wavestation, I think I will sell the Wavestation but was wondering about the D50,D70. I think I should keep the D50 as I read that the D-70 is more sample playback, what do you think?
I have decided to keep both the D50 and D70. Just cleaned the rubber membrane under the keys of the D-50 as one note was off and another two were transmitting max velocity. Works fine now. The D70 is a bitch to get into, had some buttons smashed and to replace them we had to go right through the boards from the bottom to get to the top of the keyboard!
The joystick is used mainly for controling paramaters, use it instaad of the inc/dec buttons, it can also be used for volume panning and other things. Brought back some good memories seeing this vid, the d50 was my first keyboard, learnt to play on it. ooh 1988 seems such a long time ago... :)
pretty convincing though! I think maybe the filters are analog. The D-50 came out just after the dx7 had just been hugely popular and it was digital, so roland tried to duplicate the dx-7's success. I think they through in a few effects to try and cover up some of the flaws with the d-50's oscillators (digital synths weren't golden yet). The korg wavestation is another digital yet good synth as well!
Nah thats not true. You can make it do pretty cool lead sounds. Cool electro base sounds to. I mean lush and atmospheric pads and sounds is what it does best. Its a great synth with lots of posibillities. Great with 8 note poly to! It does not sound wery analog, but it sounds like a D-50:P its a reason why its so well known in the synthesizer history!
I remember when this synth came out around 87? What a great machine! Pair it up with an MT-32 and you've got a nice ensemble! Even without programming new patches... the factory patches were just great! I think this synth should be up there with the other "immortal" synths... the prophet 5, the mini moog, the arp omni.
I already know it for years. Those 80's vintage digital synths are best. No software pluggin or modern synth even come close. The Korg M1, Roland D50, Yamaha DX7 and korg Wavestation. All vintage digital synths to kill for!
did you use the D50 Pg 1000 programmer or did you edit from the screen?? great sounds man!! wehw!! better than new stuff in the store like virus and yamaha !!
i bought the pg1000 programmer for mine. I havent used it mutch, cos i learned the interface. The interface is wery logical and well designed, but the pg1000 will let you create new sounds faster..maybe..?hehe
There are some beautiful sounds I don't recognize on that thing. I have been constrained to swapping the 5 original D-50 ROM cards. I'd sure love to obtain more patches somehow...
I can help you with the patches - send a PM if you're interested - there seems to be a lot of people who won't share anything - I can't say I understand that.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but why do you people that dont know what a certain piece of gear is/can do buy it when there are ppl like ME out there that are looking for this shit?

There's no reason to be jealous, but whatever man. I've also bought some great records just by looking at the front cover. Maybe that makes me a poser, but I could give a fuck. I just happened to get lucky and if you don't think I know what i'm doing step to me on the turntables and I can show you whats up.
supperskillz 3 years ago
The Roland D-series synths are certainly NOT the type of synths that you just pick up and buy. Programming the synth is not at all user-friendly and the manual is such a poor translation that it's no help. If you don't know what you're doing with this synth, you won't be able to do much more than bang away on the presets, most of which suck.
I mean, you could have spent that $250 on a used Micron or some other synth that sounds awesome and is easy to use right out of the box.

that's a good opinion, I'm having a great time "bangin" away on the presets and I prefer a challenge. Speaking of banging, I had a great time with your mom last night :)
supperskillz 3 years ago
Wow, how do I respond to such an intelligent argument? I'm not sure.
I suppose I should rephrase my wording: if you like the presets, then great. However, I don't care for most of them (they sound like crappy '80s music), The fact is that if you want to go beyond them, you're going to need to spend a lot of time figuring out how to use it. It can be pretty frustrating if you don't know what you're doing.
Have fun with the "bangin", I'm sure my mom appreciates getting laid in her old age.

you're right, that was a little immature but I'm tired of people hating cuz I found something they have been wanting.

Hoppe it help you.
103959770979 3 years ago
only problem is you can get a D-50 and most of the other synths that the V-Synth emulates for half the price it costs to buy a V-Synth. Sure you have the reliability and small package of the V-Synth, but you also lose analog distortion and other various factors of having the originals. not to mention the full on controls. i love the V-synth but it's WAY over priced for most musicians these days.
ObsoleteSystems 3 years ago
V-Synth GT is not capable of adding d-50 in at all. There's no card slot, i heard Roland tried to make it part of the OS but it kept crashing the synth, so they left it out,bad idea. Best bang for the buck a used V-Synth v2with the D-50 card, i have seen these sell for as little as $650.00. The card is not just a D50, it contains all the sounds from Rolands PCM card series plus 28 additional waveforms not present in the original.

Yeah you are right those machines are legendary. Despite their lack of high note polyphony and small internal sound banks they are and were the best.

Geddy Lee, from th band Rush, plays one of those on the Hold Your Fire album! That is so awesome!

It was also used on "Roll The Bones"along with the Korg Wavestation
Nishiki2407 3 years ago
BEATIFUL patches! I got one used and the presets were mostly emulations of polysynths and brass sounds. And well played too. I wish I was as good with my D-50.

I miss the D-50 all of a sudden, I've had two or three over the years; even the V-synth with the D-50 card. It all gets back to me, even though I did the D-50 Refill for Reason (yes, I am Patrick Fridh)... I need a D again!

Are these all factory presets or can I download them somewhere?
celestinocamicia 3 years ago 5
Most are created by some guy i bought it from but some are presets too..

We have one of these in my church's youth band. I always thought it sounded cool but I never knew it was so well regarded.
budgetminded 3 years ago
Depends on what circle your're in. These huge ambient sounds seem to fall out of it almost, but this is a drawback if you're with a band and you JUST need a frikkin organ or piano sound. Otherwise, it's an awesome sounding board.
oS2006DE 3 years ago
The patch at 2:53 is called "Wheather Fax"?I just picked up a perfect condition D50 dirt cheap, and that same patch just happens to be in it i know it's not a preset, i think it's a Vahala sound.Try holding a sustaining chord with your left hand, and play a staccato string line with your right, you can hear the tone "Brightfifth" being used.I now have a Roland JD800,JX10,D50.
Nishiki2407 3 years ago

Hi, nice sounds. I have just been given a D50,D70 and Wavestation, I think I will sell the Wavestation but was wondering about the D50,D70. I think I should keep the D50 as I read that the D-70 is more sample playback, what do you think?
clavdig 3 years ago
D50 is a classic!
poesimo 3 years ago
I have decided to keep both the D50 and D70. Just cleaned the rubber membrane under the keys of the D-50 as one note was off and another two were transmitting max velocity. Works fine now. The D70 is a bitch to get into, had some buttons smashed and to replace them we had to go right through the boards from the bottom to get to the top of the keyboard!
clavdig 3 years ago
Hmm. is that a vector control i see?
vistasug 3 years ago
The joystick is used mainly for controling paramaters, use it instaad of the inc/dec buttons, it can also be used for volume panning and other things. Brought back some good memories seeing this vid, the d50 was my first keyboard, learnt to play on it. ooh 1988 seems such a long time ago... :)

I guess Roland did an amazing job in making the Roland D50. It sounds sweet and warm. It sure is an amazing analog Synth.
JazzMusic79 3 years ago
It's not analog, it's digital
Biopharmer 3 years ago
Thanks for correcting me. I always tought it was a analoge synth.
JazzMusic79 3 years ago
pretty convincing though!
Biopharmer 3 years ago
nothing like the d-50...i've had mine 4 20 years now....rock on !!

alphacode909 4 years ago
well I love atmospheric sound
uozon 4 years ago
Nah thats not true. You can make it do pretty cool lead sounds. Cool electro base sounds to. I mean lush and atmospheric pads and sounds is what it does best. Its a great synth with lots of posibillities. Great with 8 note poly to! It does not sound wery analog, but it sounds like a D-50:P its a reason why its so well known in the synthesizer history!
Synthomania 4 years ago
PS.... sorry for the spam... I forgot to mention... when this synth first came out... keyboard players everywhere were going apeshit over it!
pswallace 4 years ago
I remember when this synth came out around 87? What a great machine! Pair it up with an MT-32 and you've got a nice ensemble! Even without programming new patches... the factory patches were just great! I think this synth should be up there with the other "immortal" synths... the prophet 5, the mini moog, the arp omni.
pswallace 4 years ago
Sounds like a lot of aliasing in the filter on high settings (birds chirping!) But nice synth!
Andronicus2007 4 years ago
I already know it for years. Those 80's vintage digital synths are best. No software pluggin or modern synth even come close. The Korg M1, Roland D50, Yamaha DX7 and korg Wavestation. All vintage digital synths to kill for!
bas7es 4 years ago
Yes you are right about them being the best.
I currently have a:
Digital Synths D-550, M1R, Wavestation SR rack, JD-990 .
Analog: Roland MKS 50 and 80
Virtual Analog: Virus TI Rack.
Romplers: JV-2080, Fantom XR Rack, MOTIF Rack ES Triton Rack

i bought the pg1000 programmer for mine. I havent used it mutch, cos i learned the interface. The interface is wery logical and well designed, but the pg1000 will let you create new sounds faster..maybe..?hehe
It looks cool tho D-50 with a PG1000;)
