I get a kinda light headed and sweak and sick to my stomach when i see or having my blood drawn but if i became a phlebotomist , would i get over the sight of blood or get used to it?
What are the requirements for high school courses? I'm 16 now and in August I'm beginning 11th grade. I think I would like to do this but I am just curious about the requirements. Do I have to take the SAT's?
Im currently going to school to become a Medical Assistant, and Im thinking about becoming a Phlebotomist after that, but im still like ehh not sure yet ^_^
@mizzthicks21 I donate blood at the blood bank. I overheard a tech there say they get paid $12.00 an hour. Get 2% pay raise each year. Then she said they have a high turnover rate, they quit and then go to work at hospitals or become a traveling phlebotomists. She said hospitals pay $14.00-$15.00 an hour.
This would be a med tech not a phlebotomist. You would never see a phlembotomist make blood slides or work lab machines besides a cytospin. Phlems only draw blood.
@Myella229 Im not sure where you are located but yes the phlebotomist do those jobs. It is a large part of training. I am currently in the last week of my classes and you would be surprised at what you are taught and actualy do. It also depends on the facillity you work at as to what the may require or train you to do as added duties.
I am thinking about this kinda of job. My sister works at Red Cross blood donation center. She loves it. But I notice only girls do this kinda work. Do guys also take phebotomy class too? I am a guy and I don't know if Red cross or hospital will hire a guy. Is it a female position only?
@XYtruck25 dude i work at a hospital and i am one of only 11 men that work there. there are 114 women!!! its amazing! if you want to meet girls then its like shooting fish in a barrell. BUT BEWARE!!! Working in a hospital/medical center is like working in a highschool. women are very caddy and there tends to be a lot of underlying drama!!!
@XYtruck25 yeah, youd be surprised how many males do this job, i am one of them, in this day and age, no such thing as male or women work, what ever pays is what you need to do, this job pays good too if you find a good hospital
@XYtruck25 there's this guy i know whose getting an associates degree as phlebotomy tech. I have met a few male phlebotomy techs in the past. I'm sure it's safe!
I am looking forward to doing phlebotomy work in a few years. I am majoring in clinical laboratory science (medical technology) and I will be doing phlebotomy as part of my job.
Maybe I'll get lucky and find a training program during the summer. It would be great to get some real work experience instead of just volunteering in non-related areas. Don't get me wrong, I love helping folks out, but I would rather work in a related field before I am an CLS/MT(ASCP).
I am thinking about working for United Blood services blood bank. People come in and donate blood. Are they called phlebotomy tech's, the ladies who take blood from you and put it into a bag? I know they aren't nurses. What is their title? I wonder if they pay good money
What do you mean CMA? Where do you want to work after you completed your training; United Blood Services blood bank or a local hospital? I wish you well on your training. Which pays more, the United Blood services blood donor bank or working for a hospital? I thought about becoming a phlebomists, but don't know how the future holds.
A CMA is a certified medical assistant - they're the folks that take you back to the doc's room when you visit your doctor. They also do blood pressure tests, shots, phlebotomy, etc.
I can't say for sure which pays more. It depends on many factors.
There's a demand for phlebotomists just like any other medical job. It depends on your area how much competition there is for jobs.
they are either medical assistants which blood drawing is part of the cirriculum or techs, and here in new york goes from to start 10-11 bucks an hour, but it is back bone of health field and not everyone is expertize in it especially getting blood from infants and children and diabetics, then as u get experience the money could rise to 15-20 but llately some hospital labs hire cheap imports from phillipines and other 3rd world countries, and i had one draw blood from me she forgot to use wipe
I go to United Blood services to donate platelets. I heard a tech or nurse tell a lady about working for United Blood. She said she has been their for 2 years and only makes $12.50/hour. They only get 50cent raises a year. this is in arizona. Tech or nurse said she is going to college also to become a LPN (nurse) Question for you is; are the people who work for United Blood Services, phlebotomists or just regular nurses? All of them are in their 40's to 50's. All of them are very nice people
The school im about to go to will train and pay for the certifications for, phlebotomy ekg, medical assisting and something about office work, coading and something else, its 9 months long and ill have 4 or 5 cert's.. I dont remember them all. Ill start in march or april, depends on my job. NY, sucks for pay... Check out Denver, or eaven texas where im at.. starts at 15 to 16 but most require 6 mo to 1 year experience The internship i wana get pays 16 to 20. but i have to get top 4 of the class
@debz12180 this "cheap imports from the philippines" are the back bones of hospitals all over the country without this people america will be paralyze, can you tell me is there any hospital in the country that doesnt hire filipino? nope? MEANS! filipinos are good worker!
@ourtrip0312 If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all. and donot send messages that's totally degrading to my race! whatever you put in your profile about yourself is the total opposite of who you are! and i want you to know that Filipinos are good people period!!!

this video is extremely misleading on the job responsibilities of a phlebotomist...lol...and btw, i am a phlebotomist getting a taste of an MLT's job....we are opening a small lab at our office and i was very ignorant to the amount of work MLT's do...not just pushing buttons....
You (and other comments here) are absolutely right about not being technically correct (misleading). These videos were produced by the New Jersey Department of Labor for informational and promotional purposes. Any time non-experts try to explain expert fields, there is always misinformation conveyed. On the other hand, I know many phlebs is multiple hospitals that are performing a variety of testing procedures under the CLIA rules.
I started at the physician's office I am at now in Feb this year....I have had a crash course in what a phlebotomist is actually allowed to do! lol...Apparently, all it takes is a certain amount of experience and a HS diploma to perform moderately complex tests! So now, with only 2 1/2 years of experience phlebotomy....I will be running my own mini lab! craziness....

MLT's bitch all the time about their "so called job" all they have to do is stand near a piece of shit equipment and let it do the work for them. Damn near all of them don't want to draw blood unless they have to. Why? Because they don't know how to properly put forth the effort to do so and they are almost often scared to face the public and deal with their concerns about the procedure. All MLT's are required to do that would be concidered important would be to maybe call a critical result.
Who do you think you are? Med Techs such as myself are far more than mindless drones who sit near a piece of equipment and press buttons and type in results into a computer. It requires a vast knowledge of hematology, chemistry, microbiology and bloodbanking. One false move in the bloodbank will KILL someone. Try not sending in blood work on your patients (because i'm betting your a nurse) and see how far along in treating them you get. We're more important than you want to admit.
Phlebotomists DO NOT run lab tests. They can 'start' a centrifuge...but not actual 'real' testing. The only actual test a phlebotomist can perform is one that is waivered (ie, glucose finger puncture). Most labs orders on specimens are at least moderately complex, thus performed by med techs and technologist. Phlebotomists only do draws...and now Respiratory is responsible for ABGs, so it's safe to say that most phlebotomists only perform venipuncture.
juz graduated as a Medical lab technician, i love drawing peoples blood, but i dont like d part that u give ur patient a lil discomfort..but based on d video i never thought phlebotomist can do lab. stuff ..i thought they only draw blood, maybe i was wrong, but i prefer working in d lab, specially microbiology dept..
Yes, the video is misleading. Video is actually from the New Jersey Department of Labor. That's what happens when these kind of promos are produced without consulting the experts!
According to this video, A phlebotomist not only draws blood, but appears to have the same job responsibilities as an MLT and/or MT(Medical Technologist).
you guys seem smart, I need help...For the MX-5000Z, how do I input six simultaneous sample banks into a 15db gigahertz mixer with 2 and a half effects in a tube setting? I did the reversal tracks while maintaining a 16:24 ratio, but it still cancels out the virtual mp recoil adjuster. If the stereophonic JMP hums, will that affect the phantom powered condenser mic running off my current WQXZ wattage? PLEASE HELP!
Wow,it is so easy for you there in the US,you got phlebotomist to draw blood in my country a nurse and that would be one with 2 years of nursing education has to do everything and know everything.I do phlebotomy,IV therapy and many other things.I wish we had specialized nurses who would do at least phlebotomy, that would take a little bit of load from our backs.
I wish that was me drawing her blood she has nice juicy veins!!!!!!!!!!!! Those are the ones you look foward because when you have a few hard sticks in a row, somebody like her with good comes in the lab to get there blood drawn just makes you forget all of the hard blood draws of that day.
I'm about to do training as a phlebotomist and as I have RSI ( repetitive strain injury ) in my shoulder and was wondering if this is a problem with doing this type of work ?
How much do they make?Does anyone know?

Yes, venipuncture (blood drawing) is what a phlebotomist does. The ladies you're referring to may be CMAs or nurses, but they may also be phlebomists.
Lots of people in the medical field are qualified to draw blood, but phlebomists do that as their primary job.
