i dont care about his hair. i dont even watch the video. i just listen to.... Prokofiev. this piece makes me CRY, damn, cause it has some romantic colors combined with disonance. all together makes is sound so tragic, so close to ur soul.

What a great pianist he was!! Great intensity!! But, speaking of something completely unrelated... he looks terrible with the hair soooo long!!!! TERRIBLE!!!!

The first movement cadenza is hard, but nothing like the second movement, a scherzo which is "no joke'. The cadenza in the fourth mvt. is no laughing matter either. Compare what is comparable. Piano writing of Prok and Rach are so vastly different. Both are extremely athletic and pianistic. Rach needs sweep and speed with great clarity, Prok needs more percussive brute force behind every finger, martellato. I love playing both of them.

Prokofiev complained that he had to practice this 4 hours a day for weeks to get it up to performance standards...and you could argue that he ranked as one of the finest pianists of his day.

You are actually very incorrect. First of all Prokofiev's second has only reached "popularity" in the past decade or so. Everybody now want's to be the one to say they conquered "Mt.Everest" better known as the cadenza in the first movement.

I assume you have never studied, learned or taken a look at the score . Racmaninoff's 3rd is difficult but Prokofiev's 2nd is terrifying. It is no secret that this has got to be one of the most difficult of all piano concertos. Not to mention it's tiring!

@Hervinbalfour Wait! I never said the Prokofiev 2nd it's not difficult. It's very, very, very difficult, sure, one of the most difficult, but for me not THE most difficult!!! I know very well because I studied it. But the Rachmaninov 3rd it's more diffcult than it. however, also depends on the characteristics of the pianist. for some it is more difficult a work, for others another.

@TheEngraver I think Rachmaninov 3rd piano concerto is easier than Liszt's sonata in B minor, Liszt's Totentanz and Prokofiev second piano concerto. :P

@massimiliano123123 P.S. se davvero pensi che la Sonata di Liszt sia più difficile, mi vien da pensare che che non hai mai studiato né l'una né l'altro. Lo stesso vale per il Totentanz. Anch'io pensavo che la Sonata fosse molto difficile, invece poi quando mi misi a studiarla mi resi conto che non è poi sta gran cosa, molti passi sono solo scena. Infatti nel giro di tre settimane era tecnicamente già perfettamente a posto (poi per approfondirla musicalmente mi ci son voluti mesi, chiaro).

@TheEngraver Beh, Anch'io penso che la sonata in si minore non sia tutta questa difficoltà. Ma confrontando gli spartiti, secondo me il 1 movimento del Rach 3 è mooolto più semplice. Dico questo perché tecnicamente sono molto differenti, per cui io potrei avere maggiori difficoltà in uno invece che l'altro.

Per il Totentanz.. ci sono passaggi che penso siano estremamente difficili. La parte dei Glissando, invece, è molto facile ma non capisco perché tutti fanno un sacco di errori proprio là...

@massimiliano123123 1:Vedi,il fatto è che non dipende solo dalle note scritte,ma anche da chi le ha scritte.Se la 1a o la 4a Ballata di Chopin l'avesse scritta Brahms sarebbe estremamente più difficile,mentre se la 3a sonata di Brahms l'avesse scritta Chopin sarebbe più facile.Il 1o movimento del Rach3 è molto più difficile di quel che sembra,credimi parlo per esperienza personale,anche se ci sono momenti in cui ci si può riposare.Anche 2o e 3o movimento sono molto più difficili di quanto sembra

@massimiliano123123 2:un conto è leggerli,un altro è poi studiarli ed eseguirli.E' anche vero che ci sono passaggi che sulla carta sembrano chissà cosa quando poi invece sono tutto sommato semplici, come per esempio quelle due pagine del 3o movimento prima della ripresa,piene di biscrome.Al contrario,il Prok2 sulla carta pare difficilissimo,invece è molto meno difficile di quel che sembra,CADENZA A PARTE(che è paurosa).Il fatto è che mettendosi a "studiacchiare" il Rach3, pare non poi così...

@massimiliano123123 3:..difficile perché la scrittura è estremamente pianistica e tutto sommato piuttosto naturale per la mano anche se portata spesso alle estreme consequenze,invece poi studiandolo sul serio ci si rende conto che nonostante sia scritto molto bene per il pianoforte e per la mano(cosa non sempre riscontrabile in Prok),proprio questo estremismo unito alla lunghezza e alla grandissima fatica,lo rendono spaventosamente difficile.P.S. Totentanz?per me molto più facile di quanto pare.

Blah blah blah! Who cares? Just enjoy the music! Difficulty is a very relative concept in music. Even a very great pianist can find a Mozart's sonata more difficult than a Rach concerto...

@MrNic111279 Yes, you've all reason. But enjoying music don't exclude the possibility of a rational and analytic discussing. Difficulty, however, it's not so very relative. There's objective AND subjective difficulties, not only subjectives. "entre nous"...i've been ever terrified to play Mozart in a recital, hehehehh, i'm afraid of Mozart's sonatas and concertos more than a Rach's or Prokofiev's sonata. ;-) That's why I never played Mozart in a public recital (but when I was 10 years old) ;-)

@TheEngraver The 3rd rachmaninov piano concerto??? NAAAAH.. it's mooore easier than appears!! Prokofiev's Cadenza is very very difficult and "unusual". Rachmaninov's Cadenza is difficult, but more linear!

@massimiliano123123 Il fatto è che la cadenza è la parte forse più facile del Rach3, mentre il resto del concerto è spaventosamente difficile. Invece il discorso è inverso per il Prok2, la cadenza è terrificante mentre il resto del concerto invece tutto sommato non è poi così difficile, tranne alcuni punti. Gli altri tre movimenti di questo Prok2 infatti sono abbastanza abbordabili, per un professionista. Detto questo, io semplicemente adoro questo concerto mentre il Rach3 non mi piace. ;-)

@massimiliano123123 I totally agree with you, but in my opinion, Rach 3's difficulties do not only lie in the cadenza. It's just a mix of different elements that comes together here. For instance, 1st mvt., the big climax shortly before the cadenza is not very difficult in terms of technique, but it is insane what you can do in terms of voicing here (just one example out of hundreds... :D)
