  • I enjoy the music, but this song is called "Scotland the Brave" how about an american song?

  • /watch?v=WJhWRBlkv18&feature=related

  • สวยมากครับ ^^

  • I live in Lexington and my dad went to VMI :)

  • The hat is also based of the french "shako" hat

  • Greeting from Hungary!

  • YOU DONT BELIEVE I AM JOHN F KENNEDAY REINCARNATED TO GET BACK AT MY ASSASSIN CALL JEWS ORGANIZED CRIMINALS???

YOU DONT BELIEVE I AM JOHN F KENNEDAY REINCARNATED TO GET BACK AT MY ASSASSIN CALL JEWS ORGANIZED CRIMINALS???

  • ke sincronizados!!!!

  • God Bless that almost or all Senior Military Colleges stand out by using West Point still or a different uniform. I am starting TAMU in the fall. I was accepted to the other 5 and USMA, USNA, and USAFA wanted me to attend, but I would rather stay close to home here in Texas for family sake. I am glad that SMC's use different and are allowed to so we don't look like the normal ROTC's

  • will these men serve in the armed forces after graduation

  • @123nypd While four years of ROTC is a requirement for all cadets, accepting a commission in the armed forces is optional. VMI class of 2008 achieved a 52.8 percent officer commissioning rate. The VMI Board of Visitors has set a goal of having 70 percent of VMI cadets take a commission by 2015

  • @RobARug thanks for replying man; good details!

  • Gotta love the nose chains! :D

    **not

  • AIR FORCE BEATS ANY OTHER MILITARY BARNCH INCLUDING THE ARMY

  • @Mr713819 sure the air force may specializze in other things but you cant talk shit about the navy because at the end of each day everyone serves their country.

  • @Mr713819 i noticed you didnt compare your weak service called the chair force to the greatest fighting force in the world the U.S. MARINE COPRS and every time Marines are around you CHAIR FORCE hide from us except your women they love us they finlly get to be around real men

  • AIR FORCE BEATS ANY OTHER MILITARY BARNCH INLUDING THE ARMY

  • This parade just happens like not even a mile away from where I live, and I have never been to see it! :( Yet other ppl from way further away have. *sigh* Oh well, maybe next year.

  • VMI uses the same uniform of USMA (West Point) as does the Citidel. Yes they are commissioned 2nd Lt. (Army,Marines,Air force) or Ensign (Navy/Coastguard) after completion of Advanced training. The Maritime Academy is for the Merchant Marine Officers and their uniforms reflect the Coast Guard and Navy officer uniforms.

  • When they graduate are they commissioned officers in the US Army?

  • @StreamingKnowledge Actually once they graduate you can be commissioned in any branch they choose

  • WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT THIS WAS WEST POINT? CAN PEOPLE NOT READ THE TITLE

  • Isn't this song the pipes are playing Scotland the brave? I just think thats kind of weird.

  • @logohi212 Their Americans. They haven't got many songs of their own ;-)

    Nice uniforms though :)

  • @ViccardXViccc lo0l. we r just embarrassing our cultural background. ;-)

  • forget the nose strap, give them credit for who they are, and what they stand for.

Those of you who are complaining about a nose strap, get a life

  • collected many British pipe and drum lps as a kid loved them. now the pipes are overused and they sound like a lot of squeeling to me, atlthough this band is A-1and I have always said as a long time music fan -- what makes you happy is good music. March on!

  • I dont know why, but bagpipes are fucking awesome

  • @Masanian Because they're bagpipes

  • As a former trumpet player ill speak about the chin/nose straps. the strap actually goes under the bottom lip, not under the chin. as for why the band wears it under the nose, because if is was worn under the lip it is in the way when you are trying to play so for the band it was moved. If you look closely at the saber bearers, they are wearing the chin strap under the lip and not under the nose

  • "They're playing a British tune for some reason." HUH???? That "British tune" is SCOTLAND THE BRAVE!!!!

  • God bless the Military! I may be from Massachusetts, but my ancestry from Bland county Virginia says "This is what you grew from". Huzzah!

  • wow the first guy you see drumming looks like joey mcintyre from new kids on the block or maybe im worng

  • Nose straps aren not ridiculous. Just scholar tradition like any else sttrange habits in universities around the world. They are all students after all. From the distance straps look like moustaches.

  • in the early 19th century. VMI hasn't changed their formal uniforms a whole lot since then. The uniform is "Coatee full dyke with Arms". Since theyr'e a band unit, they're arms are their instruments. The Pipers wear kilts instead of 'ducks', or trousers. We wear the 'hat straps' like that because they look stupid if you actually put them under your chin.

  • They're playing a British Tune for a couple of reasons, for one they're pipers. Pipers generaly play Scottish tunes. Second, they're a military band, and so they play military songs. Obviously theres a strong British influence in the US Military, and VMI hasnt changed much since 1839. Lastly, they're from an area of the US with an extremely strong Scottish influence due to all the Scots that migrated to the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. The 'funny hats' are Shako's, common headgear

  • You Can Clearly See The British Influence Here. The Drum Majors Are Similar To The Drum Majors They Used In Britain. Officers Carry A Sword And March To A Famous British Tune. Even The USMC Band Has A Drum Master Similar To A British Drum Major.

  • Is there a funtion for their funny hat straps?

  • neato.. baha..

  • LOL at the americans trying to be British

  • they cant breathe through their noses

  • Firstly there is no such regiment as The Royal Scots Guards. Just the Scots Guards. And why are an American band playing Scotland The Brave?

  • @plumroseham I do'nt no why the Americans play Scotland the brave ,but by the Way :The song was written in the Jear 1951 by Cliff Hanley for performer, producer and music shop owner (Sauchiehall Street and Renfield Street) Robert Wilson who needed a song to close the act of his performance at a Christmas Scottish review musical show at the Glasgow Empire Theatre.

But look how the Americans are marching so you see - it's a Showband

  • @plumroseham

    because they have impeciable taste!

  • @plumroseham Probably has something to do with their history? Most Americans came from that area during colonial times you know.

  • pretty good performance. though no one can match the skill and prestige of the Virginia Tech Regimental Band, the Highty Tighties!

  • @demonhunter5502

honestly tech's band doesn't impress me much. the videos ive seen of them they repeat the same marching sequence on the field during march ons and it gets boring. if any bnd has a good credential on them, it's Norwich University's Band. not only is NU the first corps of cadets school, they also have the first and oldest collegiate band.

  • No, the BEST band in the parade is the UNITED STATES MARINE BAND. End of discussion.

  • scotland the beauty ^^

  • Hmmm... reminds me so much of the Royal Scots Guards :) Good show! Thanks loads for sharing! :)

  • Spare me from the bagpipes....sounds like somebody strangling a cat. Too bad I couldn't hear the rest of the band.

  • OUTSTANDING

  • whats this song called

  • @themagotman Scotland the Brave it is a traditional Scottish march

  • there was no confederate battle flag but there should have been. Even more so considering vma is the only school ever to go to war with the us.

  • @samuelpdog Cadets at The Citadel in SC fired the opening shots of the war. i would say that had to count for something. And while we didnt fight as a corps of cadets we are proud of our graduates role in the war of southern independence here at West Point.

  • Does anyone else find the nose-straps ridiculous? (I guess they are a descendant of the chin-strap... but these straps appear to be hging the underside of their noses! Wtf??

  • @mdickinson YES!!! I'm glad someone else pointed that out!

It also seems like it would hinder brass players. I can't imagine maintaining a decent embouchure with something pulling at the upper lip.

  • I was about to ask about the chin/noise straps until I saw your postings. Com'n, someone please explain.

  • @mdickinson as a former trumpet player its often easier for us to breathe through the sides of our mouths when playing then breathing throught our noses

  • It's because they are in the band. The rest of the cadets wear the strap under their chin. But it is under the nose because it would prohibit some of the instuments form being played correctly.

  • @mdickinson All other cadets at VMI wear the chinstraps under the chin, but the band wears them under the nose as it is rather difficult to play a wind instrument with the chinstrap under the chin.

  • @mdickinson You were never Military... pity... you would never understand and explaining it is moot.

  • @eddie94603 SIR, thanks for your thoughtful reply - that's very helpful, SIR!

  • @mdickinson It looks like a wierd, false mustache lol

  • @mdickinson

The Nose Straps are ridiculous but I like the 18th Century/1800's kinds of look with their uniform

  • @mdickinson Their supposed to go diresctly under the chin but doing so would restrict them from playing the instruments properly. The banner carriers and drum corp are wearing them right under the lips.

  • @mdickinson That strap is supposed to keep the hat on and is supposed to be poitioned under the chin, i wonder what arsehole thought it was a good idea to have it under the nose?. you are right mate, wtf

  • @lifeonthebeach Try playing a wind instrument with a chin strap on - then you'll understand why.

  • @mouchel1995 I have played in many many marching bands mate, never ever seen idiots with the "chin strap" positioned under the nose, "should it not be called a "nose strap" considering its position. either way mate, what ever you wanna call it, these people look idiots. any wind instrument is playable with or without the strap.

  • @lifeonthebeach Being a musician with the British Army, I can assure you this is not the case and I am also fairly sure that you would not say The Band of HM Lifeguards look like idiots.

  • @mouchel1995 then why do the drummers have it the same way?

  • @racerboy12345 Because Bands look best when all participants look the same

  • @mouchel1995 Well, the Blues and Royals don't seem to have any problem with it.

  • @mdickinson Those hats (technically, it's called a shako) necessarily have chinstraps, but musicians are often allowed to wear them above their lips so as not to obstruct the thing they're blowing into.

  • @SamHagagaga I find that hard to believe, the chinstraps should be just before the neck. But anyway, they look weird hanging under someone's nose. You have to agree on that ;-)

  • @mdickinson worn correctly they are under your top lip i believe. the mouthpieces don't allow that. check the drumline.

  • LMFAO..... bagpipe is like strangling a cat...... ohhh my goodness.... way too funny

  • @Nickthefirst71 They look ridiculous

  • @QueenBALL3R

Since you are a queen you would never understand it.

They were the best band in the parade, marching in perfect step and playing to perfection.

  • @VA24541 I understand it perfectly fine I have a military band that practices at my unit. I just think they could make their uniforms a little more comfortable.

  • ISILDER--You miss the point entirely...and study up on your history of the pipes, and what's this 'soul mate' with Scotland? They handed their sovereignty over to England. As since you missed the point I was tryng to make....get a book and study up on the history of VMI.

  • Please explain to me why the hell VMI is playing 'Scotland the Brave' and what is it with the scottish garb?....is this a case of political correctness washing away their Southern heritage??

  • @ColonelRHS Probably has nothing to do with heritage or anything like that. Might just be playing it cause its a catchy marching song. My school played alot of international songs.

  • Make an Openhouse Visit and learn for yourself kid.

  • They are playing Scotland the Brave because bagpipes are Spanish

  • Also Scotland is a soul mate of the USA , having fought wars to be independant of England....

Whats the alternative ... Did they write a tune "we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan so we can kill muslims" yet ?

  • Nope. Just look at the Confederate Battle flag. Actually the Shenadoah Valley was largely settled by the lowland Scots via Northern Ireland. Down here, in North Carolina, we had the largest Scots Gaelic speaking population in North America. Flora MacDonald, who saved Charles Stuart from the English lived close to what is now Fayetteville. You are, however, correct that the kilt wan't common attire here.

  • Too bad they had to let girls into vmi they fuck with everything down with political correctness!

  • too much low brass..

  • MrJimmyBoy, my ancestors are all of Germanic origin, however I don't appear in public with a WW1 Kaiser Bill spiked helmet or a stalhelm. I do happen to like some German marches by composers like Carl Teike. I also like Egerlander Musik but I don't go about with an Ipod playing it. If you like the pipes, more power to you. I just happen to differ. If everybody liked the same things imagine how boring the world would be.

  • SpeedyNeutrino43 no one is having a go at your ancestery, as an ex british army bandsman i think that german military music is superb. but! i dont just listen to military music, and, although i am from scotland, the bagpipes arn't heard in my home every day (once a year, at hogmanay, scottish for new years eve) if you see me in a kilt it will either be at a wedding or halloween (i was dracula last night) the world is boring, but only if you want it to be. live a da vida loca!

  • ......Dracula in a kilt, sir?

  • och aye! the noo. pass the flagon of 10 yr old plasma.

  • are u guys stupid, mixing bagpipes and brass and reeds sounds soo good, the brass and reed fill out the sound of the bagpipes, true the brass and reed doesnt need to blow so hard, check ot some more military/professional bands like from the edinburgh tattoo, ull see taht playing mixed sounds really good

  • A pox upon all bagpipe bands. Leave those things to the Scots.

  • speedyNeutrino43. you are absolutely right, but, have you any idea how many people in america are of scots descent, millions, the pipes and the tartan inspire. what is your ethnic music and national dress?

  • sounds awful everything is overblown

  • half the brass players are puffing their cheeks as they play, thats a huuuuuge no no.

  • Lol too bad "Scotland the Brave" is played by just about any band that has a pipe band...

  • your a fucking dumb shit

  • TheCitdog. hey! get your own song? thats my song. i am a scotsman. but i will allow it to be played anywhere in the good old US of A because most of you have scots blood in you. we scots have been very busy throughout the ages. SLANTJE! (scots gaelic for good luck).

  • whats name of that song

  • scotland the brave is the name of the song.

  • I love their marching technique they use, i don't know what it's called but the "bicycle" type steps they take are so different then the marching i do, and i think its really cool.

  • i think it looks un-professional. i like the straight leg roll step marching. its easier and cooler looking.

  • Well, I think that this rolling step looks very nice =) It fits with these uniforms. If they would be dressed into battle uniforms, maybe it would then look stupid....

  • How come there's no "colonial guard" for the president's palace?

cause I know there was a colonial army. theres so many countries that keep this tradition. why hasn't the US done the same thing?

  • I'm gonna upload a video like this...but the events will take place in my country...

  • Longhorn737. Thank you for the description of The Rose Parade. From the clips I have watched on Youtube it is something very worth seeing. Maybe one day I can visit USA and watch it myself.

  • Darned good group! Wow.

  • The Rose Parade sounds like a large affair. What does it celebrate?

  • The Rose Parade is a parade that is held every year in Pasadena, California USA. The parade is on January 1st of every year to celebrate the New Year. It is a tradition, this year was the 120th Tournament of Roses Parade. Bands, organizations and other various groups from all over the world come out and participate every year in the Tournament of Roses Parade.

  • Wonder what the eligibility standards are, how you would get to participate in something like this.

  • From Virginia? the military band? U mean the Military Academy of West Point marching Band

  • No they are not from West Point. Those are cadets from the Virginia Military Institute.

  • NO. They are not from West Point. Those upstanding young men are from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA. Founded in 1839, its the only military institute to ever have fought as a unit in combat.

  • Quite true!! The VA Military Institute fought on the side of the Confederacy at the battle of Bull Run (1st Battle of Manasass) in Virginia.

  • They also fought in the battle of New Market, where they turned a federal charge, charged themselves, and took the federal lines

  • not true.....The South Carolina Corps of Cadets carry 9...COUNT 'EM 9 Battle Streamers from the War for Southern Independence. There was no depression in the ground that made what they did seem more that what it was like VMI at New Market . You Vagina Military Institute douches should really have a clue what it is you are talking about before posting. THAT WILL BE ALL!

  • You must be a CitaFag because all you QUEERS know how to do is criticize other schools that are better than you. So stop because your school is still a piece of S^%$!

  • @TheCitdog It is true that the cadets from VMI fought and saved the day at New Market, the entire corp of cadets. All of them, some as young as 15 years. they stepped into the breech and repelled the 34th Mass. by the way they marched 81 miles in 4 days and nights of drenching rain. Then the battle itself was fought in a driving spring thunderstorm. Ten cadets were killed, No other school can make that claim.

  • @TheCitdog i don't understand why you and others are bashing other Corps of Cadets around our nation. It can be Norwich, VMI, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, or the Citadel, but we all had a considerable influence on our country's history and what the USA stand for which is freedom. I, personally, am in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets so I can understand the good rivalry but this is a bit too much.

  • @Khan004 all these instiutes in the americas have their influences from europe....check out the chilean marching bands and you´ll see the connections...

  • @Khan004 There is one other from the US.

  • Check your history. VMI fought in 1 Civil War battle, The Battle of New Market in 1863 with the loss of 10 cadets on the field of honor. The Citadel is the only school with 9 battle streamers: Star of the West, January 9, 1861 Wappoo Cut, November 1861 James Island, June 1862 Charleston and Vicinity, July to October 1863 James Island, June 1864 Tulifinny, December 1864 James Island, December 1864 to February 1865 Williamston, May 1865 Confederate States Army
  • @cascadeelectric Check *YOUR* history. VMI fought as it's own unit in the Battle of New Market in *1864*. Citadel cadets merely participated in battles as parts of other units. If we are to take that into account, VMI fought in every major battle during the war. In fact, it was an honorary VMI Cadet, Edmund Ruffin, who fired the first shot against Fort Sumter. No, Citadel's participation in the War Between the States is no different than its participation in GWOT today. From a distance.

  • @cascadeelectric ever hear of Mosby's Rangers...? More than 70 members were current VMI cadets and alumni....

  • @Khan004 WOW i did not know that about the combat part lol learn somethin new everyday :D

  • Scotland the Brave ?

  • yup.

  • When a chin strap becomes a nose strap, is the embochure affected? I've played trumpet for 13 years and I don't think I could play with something tugging at my nose. I guess it can be done, but it must be horribly uncomfortable.

  • I'm a trumpet player also and I dont think that I could play with a chin strap as a nose strap, it really must be uncomfortable.

  • probably the best bagpipes ive ever heard. And Ive listenend to alot of bagpipes

  • sup yo .

  • they are her states virginia`s finest!

  • wow pipes drums and the horns thats awesome

  • No, I'm from VMI's next-door neighbor. Literally--used to be cute how they could walk me to post gate after Newman Club and couldn't go a step farther. I was class of '00, so I mostly knew guys from '98, '99, '00. Had two classmates who married Corps. Smart girls!

Also knew Col. Brodie--had to wait outside his office 45 minutes once to talk music! He played with our wind ensemble sometimes.

  • That's the spirit of VMI!

    (Next-door-neighbor class of 2000.)

  • Who's your neighbor?

  • hello, this video shows the handle of the best music bands of the fire services in germany. The video emerged on 3 May in celle. I am a hobby filmmakers and have made the video.

    Sincerly

  • you guys are freakin awesome... so proud of the musicality...awesome...

  • very nice band

  • peeps? no no no no. those are CADETS!

  • I would expect much better marching skills from cadets

  • no lie

  • They seemed to be marching fine to me. If it doesn't satisfy you though, then check out their entire Cadet Corps at the 2009 Inauguration.

  • Rah Virginia Mil, Rah Rah Rah. Rah Rah, VMI, '12, '12, '12!

  • Shite sound from aye bagpipes.

  • I also saw the band perform, it was pretty good...

  • I saw the Virginia Military Institute Drill Team back in 2005 on their parade ground...

  • Rah Virginia Mil! I was so excited to watch this video and others. Keep up the great work Col. Brodie and Burt Mitchell and all of the dedicated cadets. I'm the guy behind the "FBK" cadence and I was the VMI 2002 Regimental Drum Major

  • so?

  • when has that been a problem (its a PIPE AND DRUM CORPS!!!!)

  • i don't have to like it yet

  • i like it when military bands have quads

  • thats my brothers college go vmi !!!!!!!!

  • Pretty cool...wish they played Shenandoah though

  • The uniform is the oldest uniform that is still in active service =)

  • Actually, Look up the Old Guard.

  • ourorboros2 (3 months ago)

    "there dressing is horrible!"

Blasphemer! Heretic! You dare speak badly of a school such as VMI? Ivy League schools have got nothing on this place. When the **** hits the fan, the guys who know what to do are the ones who wear the ring of the US service academies, The Citadel, and the Virginia Military Institute.

  • AMEN BROTHER! West Point will always stand with yall as the defenders of freedom. and proud to do it!

  • Despite the well intended rivalry, know that when it comes down to it, Annapolis will stand with you as well.
